This video goes over how to adjust your parking brakes both in the rear rotors and also in the center console cable adjustment.
I recently changed out all the brake components (rotors, calipers, pads and hoses) on our 2007 4Runner, but didn't feel like going in and replacing the parking brake shoes or hardware at the time. They looked good so thought I'd just leave them in but make the adjustments on the brakessdw to snug them up a bit.
As you'll see at the bottom of the rotor there's an opening and you'll find a small gear that you'll turn up and away from you to tighten and down to loosen. If you think you have slack in your cable then in the center console you'll find the parking cable carriage assembly that you can tighten up a bit.

Thanks for the walk through, the shop wanted to charge me $70 to adjust the parking break and I’m sure all that they would do is turn the wheel spacers. It’s a bonus to know how to adjust the cable as I haven’t seen anyone else walk through that. Much appreciated!!

Thanks for the video! Found out the hard way you can’t pass inspection without an operable E brake. Very helpful including both adjustments. I had already attempted the cog adjustment after replacing the shoes. Turns out the cable needed adjusting. Cheers!

My buddy replaced rear brake pads and the and rear parking brake shoes with the brake hardware because there was a horrible scraping sound and after the replacement I noticed that the car requires me to press on the gas a little harder maybe like 10-15% more to maintain speed. It also seems like there is something restricting it from spinning more freely. Do you think it’s because he put the parking brake on too tight?

Yes!!! This happened to me when I did the initial adjustments. Raise both rear wheels off the ground and release the parking break. You should be able to spin the back tires without resistance. Be sure to block the front wheel etc. safety first

Hey sorry. I totally missed this question. Yes that’s not right and it’s likely the parking brake is too tight. The rear brake calipers should release, although maybe bleeding the system will reset everything (assuming adjusting the parking brake doesn’t work. I think I mentioned it in the video but tighten up that parking brake gear till the wheels can’t turn and then turn it off till they spin.

If it came down it would land on the wheels I have on each side of the truck. I wasn’t concerned.

Not on this one. I threw the 285s under the back of the rock sliders in case the jack dropped. Shockingly I lived.
