Preparing any teenager for adulthood is challenging and then add trauma on top of that and it can be even more challenging. At the Filled conference* I went to a breakout by Melissa Smallwood and just had to share these 6 key skills with you.
There is definitely a NEED in every state for foster parents. I hope this encourages you to take the first step to get licensed yourself or help a foster parent local to you :)

I have a Master's degree in education and have had a managing position where I worked solely supervising teens and young adults. My husband comes from a difficult background and he lacked time management skills when I married him. Instead of offering advice ask a few strategic questions that will help them think through the process while also showing them that you care. Questioning can be an excellent scaffolding strategy. When a teen gets a job you can help them by asking: How long does it take you to get to work? When will need to get ready? Do you have the documents that you need to complete the paperwork? What are you planning to eat on break? Etc. This guides them into what it is they need to consider and how to prepare without giving advice. It also gives them the opportunity to ask questions. Some teens hate questions but I could usually get away with at least one. Then I would probably help make sure that they are on time for two weeks and then let them know that it's their responsibility and start to transition out of that. You can also ask them reflective questions to help with performance such as, "What is the most difficult part of work?" or "How do you feel about your boss and coworker?" This gives insight into their thinking and problem solving while also opening the door for the possibility of important conversations. This is just my experience...

I LOVE THIS!! thank you for your input! Yes, advice giving and asking questions to help them think are very different. I definitely need to get better at asking questions. Thanks for taking the time to write this insightful comment.

Former Foster youth and troubled teen here Here’s an impossible challenge. Love them as family for life. If you can’t, (Most people can’t, that’s okay) Tell them to join the military, police, or fire service. They will be part of a sibling hood for life. They will always have a home that can never be taken away. They’ll live on bases where all their needs are met, and people will look out for them. Plus they’ll have jobs and good retirement later in life. Also make sure they know how to drive. (That’s probably the best gift a foster parent can give) Good luck.

In my experience fostering two teenagers from a very disruptive background there have been different challenges when teenagers engaged in rather destructive behaviours involving alcohol and drugs and also befriending the wrong kind of people. It is not always a matter of letting them make their own mistakes and deal with the consequences. It is really hard to see children suffer from the poor choices they make or the challenges they have as a result of past, also drugs/alcohol abuse by mother while pregnant for example.

My teens don't want to learn to drive. So I give them a choice. They can catch public transport or practice learning to drive. It's their choice. Guess what they choose to do? 🚗 🎉

That’s a great option when you have access to good public transportation:)
