Today we are going to debunk some myths about borderline personality disorder (or BPD) because BPD is often misunderstood and stigmatized, which can lead to people being mistreated and hurt. That’s why it’s important that we all understand what BPD is and is NOT. But for the sake of this video I am going to focus on what BPD is NOT and I have 6 myths and misconceptions to get through. • Borderline Personality Disorder is attention-seeking • BPD only affects women • Borderline Personality Disorder is rare • BPD is just like bipolar disorder • People with Borderline Personality Disorder can not be in a healthy relationship • BPD is not treatable

The most common BPD triggers are relationship triggers. Many people with BPD have a high sensitivity to abandonment and can experience intense fear and anger, impulsivity, self-harm, and even suicidality in relationship events that make them feel rejected, criticised or abandoned👍

IME a little conversation of disagreement is enough to trigger intense fears. It’s a constant miss interpretation of the environment, because sooner or later we have disagreements in our relationships. That’s why unlearning is so important. My therapists at the local DBT/STEPPS are actually calling it Emotional Intensity Disorder (EID) instead of BPD because there is a debate as to whether it's a trauma disorder and not a set of fixed personality traits.

@@stevendurrant1724 the reason it is called borderline is because one of the symptoms that people with BPD exhibit is a borderline or mild psychosis, i.e., distorted perceptions and cognitions. This is a real symptom of BPD. I'm fine with changing the name of BPD to anything, e.g., emotionally unstable personality disorder, but that doesn't change the fact that one of the symptoms of BPD is distorted perceptions and cognitions (like a mild psychosis).

That's how I felt when I first found out. Hang in there. With therapy (and meds if you need them), I'm finally coming out the other side. If you can't afford therapy, I have found the DBT Workbook really helpful. Also reading up on Marsha Linehan and her work/books. There are a lot of biased articles out there, even by psychologists/psychiatrists. Thankfully we have people out there who are like Kati, who understand there's a stigma and don't buy into it because it is, in fact, total BS. You got this

I was an autistic kid raised partially by a narcissist mother. I ended up with BPD on top of my ASD. I couldn't possibly count how many times I've been accused of things that I never intended like being manipulative when I wasn't, or seeking attention, or being lazy, or trying to screw someone over, or even having attitude when I was just confused and stressed, only to be yelled at. Nobody seems to give a shit or believe me, even when they know I have clinical diagnoses.

That’s not uncommon and doesn’t make you any less valid in your struggles with the disorder. I have this issue too. A lot of doctors have told me I don’t look depressed. And my mom thinks I don’t have BPD because I hide so many of my symptoms. It’s mostly an internal struggle for me but sometimes I lash out. The important thing to remember is that BPD displays differently in different people (there’s actually 256 ways it can present itself because you have to have 5/9 symptoms to be diagnosed) just remember that you’re not alone 💙

Thanks for this! I hate having to tell people I'm not a monster. I've worked very hard to get to where I am. Another myth that I find damaging is that women with BPD are bad moms. There is even research supporting this but I don't think it's fair. I had people tell me I would damage my kids and when I had my first child I was scared that I would be reported to child services even though I hadn't done anything. I have 2 kids now and I'm a very competent and loving mom. I actually use DBT skills with my kids because DBT skills are life skills and knowing them will support them in being a healthy adult.
@simplicity6079
@simplicity6079 3 жыл бұрын
Every person is different so of course you can't apply this "myth" to everyone and I also believe that you can be a good mother with bpd if you work hard on yourself but theres also a lot of truth in this. I know a lot of people with bpd who really never should've had kids. I know my mother shouldn't have and for sure I know I will never have kids because i would definetly be a bad mother and it would be selfish 🤷‍♀️ and a lot of people are but of course everybody is different, takes a lot of work to make it work I think.

I have bpd and until I was more self aware I was very very manipulative and emotionally abusive. I think people with bpd don’t do this with maliciousness it’s always triggered by fear of abandonment. The thought of abandonment to a bpd is like physical death, it’s soul destroying, when this is triggered bpds will be manipulative to stop this feeling.

Have you ever done a video explaining in more detail what it takes to be in a (healthy) relationship with a person with a personality disorder? I know the patient has to be doing a lot of work on themself but I think it also demands a lot from the other person as well. There are a lot of personality traits that pass as "normal" in the world today but are simply incompatible with certain disorders even when the disorder is under control. Also, I'd be especially interested in anything you can say about specifically Avoidant PD and Narcissistic PD in reference to relationship issues.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! Sometimes I feel like it is impossible to heal my abandonment issues. Sometimes I feel like I've made progress, and then all it takes is one little thing that my mom says that brings me right back to that pain of feeling abandoned. And now I've also been diagnosed with acute stress disorder on top of all my other MH diagnoses due to a shooting that took place right outside my bedroom window 3 weeks ago in the middle of the night. All of this plus the stress of COVID, and I feel like I'm just hanging on by a thread. I wish I could see my psychiatrist in person. Phone appointments just are not the same as in person.

Thank you so much for this. BPD is so stigmatised, even by MH professionals, and it makes such a difference to see respected people like you setting the record straight. I have BPD and I've done a lot of work to be able to manage it. I unfortunately haven't had DBT yet but I've done my best to teach myself the skills and have found peer support to be invaluable.

@skylarmendoza9987
@skylarmendoza9987 3 жыл бұрын
BPD and Autism actually get misdiagnosed as each other quite a bit, I'm pretty sure they are often comorbid as well. I think this is because they have similar neurodivergencies (many of the same brain differences have different manifestations)

I was recently diagnosed with BPD and am a professional the mental health field. I struggle a lot with accepting this as my disorder and try my best to focus on the symptom management rather than the label itself. Definitely a hard pill to swallow but my therapist is awesome and spot on with the diagnosis. Working through the beginning has been really hard but I remind myself often that it will be worth it.

I don't know if this is relevant or not to "myths of BPD" but I've read that women with Autism are often misdiagnosed with BPD. And this has to do with the way the DSM primarily uses research based on studies of boys and men with Autism.

THANK YOU for demystify and destigmatizing, BPD. The TV and movie industries too often portray the illness as "look out! Lunatic, dangerous KILLER on the loose" The few individuals I've known harmed themselves sadly but never, never anybody else ( I am NOT talking about the emotional, inadvertent, life-altering experiences- not good with words- that occur and shape, misshape the lives of those living with a " boderline" - my mom, in denial so never treated for it...) I wish you had a "snail mail" private, P.O. box because I need advice from a qualified therapist concerning a physician! I also lack confidence. Thanjs again, Namaste, Z
