As a German, I am very flattered to hear about our great cooking ability and dress styles. However, I do not think we are even close to measuring up to the French or the Italians in both categories. Makes me a little bit worried about what is occuring in North America and Singapore. Thanks for the video !

You should visit Singapore for the food culture, there is absolutely no need to cook at home 😋😂 a full delicious meal for 2 - 4€ is more than common! In terms of dress styles, we have neighbourhood vs CBD (central business district) styles - very different when you are comfortable around your neighbourhood 😅

I am Canadian and my husband is German. My husband dressed like a gay man prior to meeting him. He didn’t cook but talked a good talk about how good of a cook he was. A lot of German men where in the military and have structure in their lives and like routine and that is what attracted me to my husband. As far as a sense of humour, he thought he was funny but he wasn’t. What attracted me to my husband was one sentence and we have been together 13 years now. I asked my husband what he was looking for, he said, I’m looking for someone to love me. Understand he was new to Canada and his English wasn’t great but honestly we have been together ever since he said that. I also overlooked things he said like, when we went for our second date he said to me, I have a gun, I was like, with you, now, longest pause ever as I stood there staring at him, he was trying to find the words to tell me he belonged to a gun club and just purchased a gun. Or when we walked he said his foreskin was sweating, he meant his forehead. Still love him and love Germany, best man I ever met

Hahahahah I love this story! Thanks so much for sharing! 🥰💛 I feel I can relate so so well! Even after 10 years together, my husband still says some weird things in English that make me wonder (mostly things that come off a lot more rude in a fight than he realizes! Hah then I have to stop him and explain how mean it was in the English language)

I like the view you got from us Germans. I am married to a indonesien woman, living together in the US. I travel for my job within North America so about 250days/year, and yes, the cultures between us is way more different than I could imagine before I came to the US back in 2004. In many ways I see the US still as a developing country, in other ways I see a lot advantages living here. About the food, well, we cook our own stuff. We don't like to go into restaurants, because in the most of them the restrooms are simply negleted. I am on the opinion, if people don't care their restrooms, why they should care their kitchen? There is no difference for me in my attitdue towards my customers, doesn't matter the enviroment. I wish you good luck in Germany, keep it up and enjoy it. Tschuess

Native older German here: Munich and Düsseldorf have one thing in common and that is their love for styling up things, in Cologne or even worse in parts of Berlin you would never ever make the same statement about clothing.

true haha :D Düsseldorf is just the capital of superficiality xD I mean compared to the leggins trend in north america people from cologne still look nice but it wouldn't be such an extreme opposition...I feel like the "dress nicely" thing isn't even a positive point for germany...clothes should be made for 1. comfort and 2. function and not for looks alone...and if that would be how society works and if noone would be socially forced to wear skinny jeans nobody would and sweatpants became the dominant style of pants xD (yes of course looking good is also an important aspect of clothing to express ones style and creativity and stuff but often it is "so you feel more confident" which usually means you dress like allll the others but why is it that you feel more powerful in a jeans than in sweatpants...just saying...)

I’m in Berlin a lot though, and while you’re definitely right… there are still some very stylish people there too! I’d just say in general, people dress nicer in Europe than in North America 🙈

concerning cooking at home, especially me being a (male) german, there are more reasons, which didn't really pop up in the video: more myself it is a hobby. it is coming down from work in the evening, relax and be creative. good music, a glass of wine by preparing dinner, is magic. when you feel confident enough to share your dish with friends, what is better than sitting in a us-/can. restaurant and waiting to get thrown out (surely asked to live with gestures) when finished the meal? i'd rather have friends in my house, having fun. it is on our own when we close the evening and not always having the feeling of getting pushed out. this is one important thing. waiters are super-friendly, but when dinner is done, they change from nice to (not-so-)nice. for a reason. hi to singapore btw. wonderful city/state, i travelled a lot. great job jenna, wonderful channel as well, as always you are bringing it to the point, we germans love.

Great video. Jess and Seb are a lovely couple. I can absolutely agree on Seb's views, reflecting a german male view, even though I'm a generation older. The section about the "grand gestures" made me think. When I and my now wife of over 30 years started dating it was about honesty, about getting to know the person behind the mask you set up for everyone else. "Grand" Gestures dont help with that as you exactly know its just made up, just an "event". My wife loves flowers and so I often brought a bouquet, but it never was about the size or price. It was the gesture that counted, not the superbness. And even the gesture only counted because I knew she loved the flowers, not because "it was expected". It's still like that today. Small gestures acknowledging you really know and appreciate your partner are so much more important then throwing huge smoke-bomb gestures. Hearing Jenna complain about her impression (or at least struggles) of not always being equal in her relationship made me shake my head. How would a very self confident intelligent woman like you come up with such an impression? I can't believe for a second you would see yourself as inferior to your partner (or he would expect you to be).

Couldn’t agree more with how small gestures are so much more important 🥰 and endearing! I definitely don’t see myself as inferior to my husband, it’s more about society seeing me as inferior to my husband. If I’m going to get personal here… my husband is a dentist and I’m an entrepreneur… though it doesn’t matter how much I earn from my full time job or how successful I am, every one here seems to think I’m just a glorified house wife 🤷🏽‍♀️ … it drives me crazy! Just because I don’t have a normal 9-5 job and I work from home does not make my job title any less important or than my husbands. You know what I mean?

@@lifeingermany_ I absolutely understand and agree. It's frustrating. Being the father of two girls (meanwhile young women) one thing I tried to engrain into their minds was not to allow other people to define their view of themselves. There are still real inequalities for women - we have to adress and change them. And there is the "perception and gossip of others". We can and have to adress that, but you can't change everyones mind. But you can develop a healthy "I give a sh## on your opinion"-attitude. As Eleanor Roosevelt said: "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission." Don't give them the permission!

@@lifeingermany_ Status seems to be very important within the German society. And people get a higher status from my point of view in 3 different ways in Germany: your job (being a physician like a dentist is very high estimated because they are not only helping people they also earn a lot of money...), your own house/appartment, which should be nicely decorated, and a fancy car (if you are not into cars maybe you have an interesting hobby you spend your money on). To me this seems to be the average German dream. So when Germans learn someone is a dentist they admire this person very eager and very easily. Whereas your own job is maybe kind of abstract for most people. Bottom line in my opinion is that the Germans, who are giving you the feeling of being inferior to your husband, are just superficial because in their mind sets your job is not as "high ranked" as being a physician. I am sorry you have to go through this... Also, the German society is in a change when it comes to stay at home moms/housewives. And this topic gets easily delicate. People are prejudiced. There are also very interesting mind sets of Eastern and Western Germans on this topic in different generations. There is a lot to learn about living abroad or travelling the world not only about other cultures than your own but also about your homecountry and what identifies you as a Canadian/northern American or German/European for instance. :)

Yeah when visiting the us I was thought as gay as well. Because of small gestures towards women (like holding the door, asking if they want iced tea or a little snack from the gas station when filling up the car.) And because I didn't brag about how big and expensive the last gun was i bought but asking on how someone s family is and then actually listening and understanding. Yeah Germans dress nice and that point didn't help me either when I got Into Jeans and fresh shirt just for picking up food or do the shopping

The good thing is you can save money in Germany, for example you don't need bathroom scales( Personenwaage?!) If you get two pounds more your friends will tell you😗

regarding cooking: I think it is not so much about being afraid of a bad dish. Restaurants are pretty good and authentic in Germany, but rather that eating out all the time is VERY expensive in Germany. Germans are caring a lot about their health(healthy diet waves) and want to save money so they like to learn how too cook - it is just a very convenient skill. And men who cook tend to care more about health in general so you 2 have excellent husbands/boyfriends. In contrast to Asia where cooking is taught in school, this is not taught in Germany so there are still a lot of people that can not cook ot simply don't want to cook in Germany ;) In Asia much men can cook, but choose not to because eating out is very cheap or better said it does not make much of a difference whether you eat out or cook yourself except for the effort you have to put in, so many asian men/people choose to eat out because it is more convenient.

For me as a German it sounds so weird not to be honest to my girlfriend/wife if she askes me about her dress or other things. Maybe i prevent her of mocking etc.. If she is the "right person" i love here in beautiful dress and in an ugly dress but i will not get her hurt by other people by beeing not honest (if we are alone) to her.

The equality in relationship seems to be on place since ever in germany. There is visibility in history since roman times, at least. There are reasons for differences, but these reasons are caused by biology. IMHO. There are other societys with strong backed position of woman: Jewish and Filipino societies. Probably more. So I am surprised?

haha as a german man, i can relate about the gayness, especially in an international context. :D One time i tried to explained where it comes from with a smirk on my face. "You know, in my parents household, my mom is the strong, rational, takes care of the money person and my dad is more the social butterfly. That leads that my pose and gesture is more feminine if I use my rational and strong side." Everyone accepted it as a clear fact and had nothing to add. I just thougth "Oh men, I have no clue either and i was just tryting to be funny ,,,, should i clear it up...mmhhhh...naaaa :D"

Meh Id say that was always a thing just is more of a thing now. And I mean not there were always outliers that had equal relationships but that was a more or less established thing at least in cities for the last 40ish years and then got bigger.

Think you also start to become very honest. You said that germans dress better than people from north america in a very open fashion 👏 that's actually what I absolutely dislike with Americans. Everything is always "awesome" and everybody is smiling and having the best time of their life even if someone made a big mistake. I once had American colleagues and that drove me crazy 😂🙈 sorry

I am also very much agreeing with what you said about this american "everything is awesome" mentality. I really dislike it. She did say "we are not fake" but to me, it does come off as fake. Sadly, I came to experience that people in the UK are exactly the same. They might not exaggerate so much on the "awesome" part, but they DO sugarcoat everything and often dont tell you the truth (due to politeness) or just don't say anything at all. To them, I mostly seem to be an insensitive monster rather than realising that i have good intentions when I'm being honest about things. They don't see that intention though, they just think im "rude".

@@faliandra7659 I can also confirm UK. Also had UK colleagues for some time. Exactly as you say. Not as exaggerated "awesome", but I found it really hard to make suggestions. Worst thing is that you don't even want to be rude, but you are perceived to be rude 🙈 had a really hard time. Think it's even tougher, if you're not "good with people". I know I'm not doing well, but it's also really hard to figure out how to handle it properly.

@@florianfanderl6674 Oh yeah, 100%. I'm really bad with people as well, but even when you tell them genuinely how you feel and that you'd appreciate honest feedback, they arent gonna tell you. The funniest part is that I dont even get it when people call germans "brutally honest"...cos to me, germans arent even that honest most of the time, they might give you a small "hint" by making a face but thats all.

Servus Jenna, after hearing all the awful things on the other channel 😱🤫😭😉 I was really interested the hear the good ones. I'm glad you didn't give up to date you husband with the realisation that he is not gay. In the way how to treat a woman and having an equal relationship together, Germany had and has a lot to improve, it's getting better of course, especially in last thirty years starting with the reunification of Germany. The political landscape changed and made a lot more things possible for woman and also for children than before. The old Germany was very conservative and you can see especially in the former west German federal states in way of childcare. Germany was and still is in different topics on the way to become a different country and we are now in the position to decide in which way it goes. Watch some old movies and TV shows with Heinz Erhardt, Loriot, Diether Krebs, Theo Lingen and Hansi Kraus and you will know what i mean. Thanks for sharing these lovely videos and conversations between the two channels. 👏

I guess that relates to most countries. It's always up to the young generation to make changes.I grew up in a time when it was out of the question for mothers to work and the fathers were the ones to make the major decisions. As an exchange student in the US in 1969/1970 I experienced the same family structures and values. When my husband changed our baby's diapers or helped me with the dishes my parents were horrified and friends mocked him. Looking at my daughter's marriage nowadays and the equality of sharing work and household chores I'm very happy that we've come that far.

It's interesting how different the experienes within the same country can be. I grew up in a household, where my mother was as highly educated as my father was (both academics). And no, none of them came from a wealthy background. Both were working. I remember my father doing household chores and changing the diapers of my younger siblings, without throwing a "thats below my alpha male pride" tantrum. And that was way way before any reunification. If the way male and female are seen in a relationship were really based on the possibilities of state financed child care, I would really be interested how that fits with Jennas impression North America has the advantage in terms of "equal relationships". It's not like they are leading the worls in terms of state organized child care. @Robert As nice the german "Asche auf mein Haupt" attitude might be, watching "old movie clips" especially old ads from the US will show you, thats not a specific german issue. We have collectively already come a long way and still a long way to go.

@@jjsch naja Deutschland war für eine lange Zeit was bestimmte Dinge angeht schon ziemlich verstaubt und spießig. Wenn man alte Berichte auch aus den Siebzigern und frühen Achtzigern dann waren gerade auch Dinge in der Form wie sie gesagt worden sind schon noch relativ grenzwertig. Für Neuerungen musste schon sehr viel getan werden. Nicht umsonst hatten die von mir genannten Herren soviel Material um den deutschen Spießbürger zu parodieren. Ekel Alfred, ein Herz und eine Seele, hatte das schon sehr gut getroffen. SketchUp hatte dadurch so großen Erfolg. Dieses ganze Konservative aufzubrechen kostete viel Kraft und tut es im Grunde genommen noch immer. Die Kinderbetreuung ist in vielen Teilen Deutschlands und gerade in den westlichen Bundesländern noch immer viel zu ungenügend und lässt vielen Familien keine wirkliche Wahl. Vorallem wegen der Öffnungszeiten in vielen Kitas, viele davon schließen schon vor 16:30Uhr mach das mal als Berufstätige Eltern.

@@robertzander9723 Hallo Robert, viele deutsche Filme und Serien aus den 60-ern kann ich heute nicht mehr aushalten. Das Geschlechterbild ist da so zum kotzen, dass ich das nicht aushalte. Ja, es hat sich sehr viel geändert. Ich habe meinen Vater, Jahrgang 1914 niemals staubsaugen, oder Fentsterputzen sehen. Er hätte auch, selstständiger Tischlermeister, niemals eine Tischlergesellin eingestellt. Und ich erinnere mich noch an die Wut meiner Stiefmutter, weil die Bank von ihr, einer Chefsekräterin, für einen Kleinkredit die Unterschrift ihres Gatten forderte! Und das war 1971, nicht 1950! Die Entwicklung geht weiter, auch in der Musik. Meine Lieblingsbands sind mehrere japanische Metalbands, deren Mitglieder alles Frauen sind! Und die viele 'harte Kerle' komplett an die Wand spielen! Aufwachen, Boys, Womens Power is coming! LG Ben

Hm, your thoughts about the clothing might apply to the bigger and posher cities such as Düsseldorf or Mümchen but if your travels around germany get you to more rural areas you probably will reevaluate your perception of that. And for the cooking: I think of myself as a cooking dyslexic. Sure, I can cook some basic meals but they usually can't hold a candle to the capabilities of my female friends. But as a 56y old hetero man (and in my experience that's valid for the whole world in male and female relationships) let me tell you that little white lies are sometimes more than necessary if your spouse is asking "do you like my new haircut" or "do you think I've gained weight". If you're brutally honest there you might get a lot of the silent treatment or looks that are meant to kill😉🤣🤣.

It depents on the individual. It is still common that mostly woman stay at home for a at least a year after the Baby is born. Mostly both parents work, except the man earns enough to support a family, but it can also be reversed, we don't really have a problem with houseman. Most people just can't afford for one parent to stay at home in Germany altough most familys would love it.

I think these big things are only for the money. Doing nice things is not the same as spending much. More expensive=more love=no. Yep also not my style 😅 I think this is often seen as cheapish I think. But that's not the case. Maybe more caring what I want or get with this money.

As a German woman, I can agree. In my point of view these are just unhealthy feminists that don't understand how equal Germany already is. We have all the same rights as man, so what do these women want? They look very greedy and demand to be treated speacial and want everything to be gifted to them. It's not like we live in Afganistan or Iran.

In the US woman have every right imaginable. Hell they even have more rights and opportunities then Men have. I think the influence on germans are negativ. The Dressing in Germany is getting worse During the last 31 years. Jenna if we had met in the past i don't know what could have happend. Wouldn't it be rude not to be honest? I would feel bad. Of course, sometimes I use "white lies" not to hurt somebody's feelings, too. It depends on the person. But if my partner asks for my advice, I'll be honest. Now, if the elderly neighbor lady just comes from the hairdresser and has spent a little fortune to get a new haircut, perm or color, I will tell her she's looking good to make her feel good... On equality, there are places where people are still backwards, unfortunately.

Genuine question: why do you shout when you talk? More general question: why do North Americans in general talk so loudly? it's extremely irritating and I always have to turn down the volume on KZfaq videos in which a North American is talking unnecessarily loudly. The microphone is picking up what you say, so there's no need for you to talk so loudly. It seems to be a cultural thing that North Americans talk really really loudly and seem to be oblivious of how irritating it is. Even with the volume turned down low, the shouty quality of your voice is still present and it's very jarring and hard to listen to. If I talked that loudly all the time I think I would have a sore throat every day!
