Maximize Kegel exercises benefits for men with these cutting edge Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy training tips for strengthening. Physiotherapist Michelle Kenway helps you last longer, overcome impotence and improve bladder control with most effective Kegels training, based on scientific muscle strengthening principles for gains.

0:52 When to Kegel
1:49 Best position for Kegels gains
3:01 Kegel exercises intensity
3:49 Kegel exercise recovery
4:27 Best Kegel exercise technique
5:29 How often to do Kegel exercises
Kegel Exercises for men include lasting longer (endurance), overcoming impotence and bladder control (e.g. after prostate surgery)
When to Kegel
Do your Kegel exercises when your pelvic floor muscles are well rested. This is usually at the outset of the day when the pelvic floor muscles are nor fatigued.
Kegels Positions
Do your Kegel exercises standing upright for maximal strength gains. Beginners may need to start lying down and progress to doing Kegels in upright positions i.e. sitting and standing.
Kegels Intensity
Do Kegel exercises with maximum effort and intensity for maximum strength benefits. Make every effort count just as you would in the gym. Do near maximal contractions for strengthening and longer holds for endurance. Pelvic floor muscle strengthening requires high load achieved by using maximum voluntary contractions. If you’re a beginner start out with the correct technique then increase your Kegel effort.
Kegel Exercise Recovery
Rest between each until recovered to allow for maximum effort.
Kegels Technique
Lower the pelvic floor muscles slowly after lifting them. Skeletal muscles strengthen most during the eccentric (lowering) part of the exercise. Beginners may find this difficult to feel at first and this skill develops with practice over time.
Kegels Frequency
Aim to do Kegel exercises at least 2 times a week to give a training effect (muscle hypertrophy) ACSM (2011) and benefits can be gained from training 3-5 days of the week.

@Yolanda Tsang PT - YO AND VAGINIA yes I love the skeletal muscle/myelin sheath diagram too, it shows things so clearly doesn't it and yes, we don't seem to focus on eccentric contractions enough for pelvic floor strengthening even though the science tells us that this is the way to go for muscle strengthening. I'd love to see some research done on eccentric versus regular PFM strengthening, best wishes to you Yo! 💮

@Rudy Holland I really don't think so Rudy, the pelvic floor muscles seem to be able to tolerate more strength training than with regular strength training exercises (probably because we can't load them with weights). I don't see an issue at all with higher frequency training for pelvic floor muscles in fact some of the recent research has shown a benefit for higher volume particularly for men. Just be sure to sufficiently rest your pelvic floor between reps and sets, all the best Rudy and thanks so much for your support

Great, great tips Michelle and as usual, well presented!! I also love the Australian accent!! Couple of questions if I may: (i) in this video you tell me standing is the optimum position, but don't mention the four point position on floor as you do in the "4 best kegels for men positions" video. I suppose optimum position depends upon kegel exercise purpose, whether for addressing bladder related issues (standing) or for performance (4 point kneel): yes/no? (ii) At the moment, I'm doing both positions each day one after the other. Would it be better if I alternate the two positions from day to day? Thanks again Michelle!
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@ Bruce Graham great question Bruce and thanks for holding me accountable on this. I thought it might be a little complex to go into too much detail with this question in this vid. but it did cross my mind when preparing this one. Bruce you're spot on, training positions need to be directed at the purpose of training and training specificity principles tell us that skeletal muscles strengthen best in the position for which their use is intended. Having said that you can't go past standing Kegels for optimum strengthening so I think that what you're doing at the moment is spot on. Just make sure you have a rest between exercises. You'll probably find the kneeling ones easier as they don't involve contracting against gravity however you're training in the position you want them to work which makes perfect sense so it's win win doing both positions. All the best to you Bruce and keep up the good work!

Hello how many sets ans reps do you recommend at the begining ? Thanks you
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@Big Boss good question thank you! When starting time yourself and see how long you can hold 1 strong contraction. Then aim to repeat this duration for up to 10 reps. Some men start at 1-2 second holds for just a couple of reps. Start at your level of what you can manage, the goal being at least 10 second holds 3-6 times daily. Hope this helps you out, all the best!

@Michelle kenway I suffer from chronic constipation and frequent urination. It means that in cases where the symptoms of frequent urination disappear, the symptoms of frequent urination will disappear. Do I do regular pelvic-strengthening kegels or reverse kegels
@michellephysio
@michellephysio Жыл бұрын
@Aoun Aibek for men with weak pelvic floor muscles because they haven’t been exercised then regular Kegels. For men that have tight pelvic floor muscles that can’t relax then reverse Kegels practicing letting the muscles relax. The trick is to know whether the pelvic floor muscles are weak from not being exercised or from being held too tight all the time. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can help you know this, all the best!🙏

With weight lifting, if you do bench press, your triceps get worked indirectly. If you do abs on the machine at the gym where you can increase weight, do Kegel muscles get worked indirectly?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@Track Guy yes great question. Yes the pelvic floor muscles do get worked indirectly doing some exercises more so than others and as you say, just like bench and triceps. Indirect pelvic floor muscle strengthening won't however be specific and as effective as dedicated Kegels or pelvic floor exercises will be for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.

I started just doing basic kegels for a week semi consistently, and already seeing results. I’m very surprised. I’ve had rock hard erections just like my early 20’s, and my spontaneous erections are slowly coming back. I’m 33 and knew my situation wasn’t normal but I didn’t think of all things I had to do kegels lol.

Michelle, what do you think of reverse kegels? Does they help? I don't know why, but my pelvic floor area is very tight. When i walk, or pee, or having sex, my pelvic floor muscles are unconsciously contracting themselves. Should i do kegels or reverse kegels or both?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@Bojan Stankovski great question. Step 1 is to learn to relax the pelvic floor muscles with reverese kegels and pelvic floor relaxation. Step 2 is to recommence kegels very gradually but only when you can voluntarily relax your pelvic floor muscles and this may take some time to learn. This video on reverse kegels may help you Bojan kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7N8rNee3bTHiqc.html and here is a daily pelvic floor relaxation video for men on YTube too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMeTaMyZ2reVh6c.html I hope this info helps you Bojan - time and patience with this and all the best!

Mam, Is it necessary to do reverse kegeal while doing regular kegeal?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@Md Sohan Miah good question and the answer is no, reverse kegels are only helpful when the pelvic floor muscles need to be relaxed (some men have pelvic floor spasm or tightness and can't relax). Most men benefit from doing these regular kegels for strengthening and relaxing their pelvic floor muscles in between exercises, no reverese kegels required. All the best!
