@@TheYardlet I think they can still get it straight, but making sure that the roof and pillars are dead-nuts will be imperative, especially when it comes time to install the window and back glass. I'd think you'd want a completely different front clip and set of doors (along with new glass) to do the final body shell alignment, even if you intend to reuse that original passenger door. But I agree on pulling before cutting, since that's what I see on body shop videos.

I forget that in the US parts for these older generation vehicles is not an issue and competitively priced i.e. affordable ! I am genuinely surprised at the availability of so many items. I would loved to have got my hands on this before you started. For me , preserving as much of the original panel work , without compromising the repair, would have been my top priority. l actually thought you would be repairing the panelwork yourselves and didn't realise you would have to bring in specialists. Sadly l can' t just hop on a plane and fly over from England ! I was aware of the 2 cars so don't know where the confusion is ! Look forward to the next instalment. Thanks for sharing .

My hat's off to ya!! I've repaired a couple of heeps that were wrecked that bad ...... and it's TOUGH to get 'em back to "square one". That being said - I'd much rather repair one that's been whacked like that than one that's rusted to a fare-thee-well!! I suspect that you are gonna find a LOT of stress in that body shell as you cut away the damaged tin ..... I had an E-Type tub on a frame rack for a week, tweakin' and bendin' to get it right after an EXTENSIVE repair .... Good thing these cars are worth the effort! I can't wait to see the progress as you go along. I'm gonna look for the blue car videos now.

I restored a 70 Chevelle SS. When i took it apart the windshield, fenders and doors fit properly. The drivers side vent box was previously damaged, and repaired (I could see where metal work had been done). After paint, I went to install the windshield, only to find that the windshield had a 2" space on the lower windshield corner. So I talked to a glass guy, and he suggested that I weigh that corner down and leave it in the sun for a week or two. After two weeks I took the weight off, and the glass had conformed to the opening.

The sub frame is NO big deal. Its mild steel and especially off the car and striped down is a piece of cake. Secure the right side frame rail on the frame rack. You will be amazed at how easily that thing un bends.LOL The sub frame by itself will go back into shape very easy. when it gets close check for datim height and tram and also make sure the width is right where the upper shocks mount to the sub frame. If the shock mounts are spaced correctly then the engine cradle will be fine and the motor mounts will line up correctly. Half day on front sub frame and ready to dip or sand blast.

This car is a perfect example of why buyers need to be very careful when purchasing these high-dollar muscle cars. Some of these pricey muscle cars have been wrecked and then rebuilt, however, the sellers will certainly NEVER tell buyers about the the extensive damage the car has experienced. Inspecting and buying these old muscle cars should be left to the veterans not the fools.

I’m very interested in watching this car come together. It’s going to be a big challenge, likely more than anybody realizes !!! Ive done some rough cars but this is nuts. It’s doable, most of the car will be replaced, no longer will it be an “original” z28. I can’t imagine who in their right mind would fund a build like this as far as paying a shop to build a car that has so few original parts on it. If it’s a sentimental thing or just a challenge to conquer I guess that’s fine. For a paying customer it’s a terrible financial decision. Do I think it can be rebuilt and be a sweet car ??? Yes. Does it make sense????

Actually, there are many many cars out there that have never been crashed, that have had most of their body panels replaced due to rust. Okay the body assembly is from ekeler and it's $13,000 so maybe that's not quite the way to go but it sounded like a good idea you can also do a deal I saw where they'd taken cut that floor out of that car and the cow and they get a late model Camaro and set that body down on the frame of the late model Camaro so essentially you have a 69 Camaro body on a 2020 Camaro kind of a cool deal another idea

In all of this I am wondering just how much of what has been identified as a numbers matching original vehicle can be removed and replaced with new components before it loses its "original" status? Given the nature and extent of the damage being described, I can see where replace would be preferable to repair and, understandably, the aftermarket can be cheaper than chasing genuine NOS panels which are about as plentiful as ice in the Sahara Desert and about as expensive if/when found. Still, would it be more in keeping with the relative rarity of the vehicle if the needed components came from same year/same base model vehicles currently resident in salvage yards? Somewhere like Desert Valley in Arizona?? where the rust factor does not play as large a role in the useability of the part? The reason I bring this all up at all is if this vehicle ever appears on the auction block then part of its provenance will have to be the fact that it has had significant repair work done to it which, in turn, raises the issue of just how original it can be said to be.
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi C W Yes I agree with you which is why we are going to keep as much of the original sheet metal as possible. We have OEM fenders, OEM drivers door and we are probably going to keep the original quarters and just fix the rust. So I think at the end of the day most of the car is going to be original GM sheet metal. I do know there are a lot of cars out there that have had a lot more panels replaced than this one will. Also, we are probably going to only replace the portion of the floor board with the damaged area only. That is true with the trunk pan as well. Only the outer edges of the trunk pan need to be replaced.

The confusion is in the videos that KZfaq recommends. All anyone has to do is look at the release dates of the videos to see that they are two different cars.

We are lining up a new metal guy and upgrading the frame machine so the job will be done properly. The videos will continue on the car within a month.

Hi James, We are interviewing good metal guys right now who have the experience in this kind of damage. It's important that we get the car pulled out and straightened properly, then have all the panels replaced properly so the car is 100% when finished. I hope within the next few weeks we will have someone and the videos can continue. I will video the entire process including the frame machine work etc.

The subframe without the engine is going to be reinstalled and some of the cut welded up and then put on a frame rack . Better late than never 😎

I don't see how it's possible to save that red car and have it still be the same car. You'll need a donor firewall the jamb is beyond repair. You could graft that section in on the Dr side from a donor and try to straighten the sections containing the VIN and cowl tags but if you go beyond that your just swapping tags. At that point it's no different than just getting another body.

Just a comment and I am not at all saying that you have done things incorrectly - but my personal choice - I would have put the shell on the rack without cutting through the A pillar so early and seen IF possible to keep that area intact. Of course your method may be perfectly correct - as looking from here in my 'KZfaq viewing lounge' certainly does not allow an ‘arm chair expert’ like myself to accurately asses all areas. My ‘theory’ is just different slant on how I would have approached it - and not criticism of yours (HA - and I may be wrong). HA - and to SHUT all the BLUE//RED critics up - I would have moved that grey vehicle out of the way so that there was a full view of the red Z28 in the same picture a the blue Z28. And repair the nose panel etc - and possibly even patch repair the original guard and IF ‘feasible’ also the quarters - just so that the % of original metal is higher. The “%” bit is just me being a 'pain in the arse for detail'. I like to use a small ‘steam cleaner//pressure washer’ to carefully clean vehicles before I start delving into disassembly - HA - keep my dainty hands clean. HA - and if I was not so far away - I’d like to volunteer some on my labour - great to see something like this saved. Have a safe and nice day all. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

I totally respect and agree with everything you said. Regarding putting both cars together, there will plenty of opportunity for that in coming videos. They are both at the body shop that is not my business and I have limited control in that department 😎

But it won't have the VIN stamped in the sheetmetal. I would agree if this were just a regular Camaro, but Z cars are bringing a premium. Even wrecked, with a proper documentation, it will bring very good money.

Am I right in thinking this car is already finished? The photo at the end of part 1, & your comments, eludes to that. In either case it makes some comments laughable. 1000's of experts & none of them have set eyes on the actual car.

@@digitalpizza1 Well thanks for responding & I'll be keenly following the rebuild. BTW, the blue one looks beautiful, but I scrutinized your last video on it, but only after you stated the paint was flawless. I'm certain there was a little booboo on the drivers rear panel between boot lid & window seal. I only looked closely after you said "perfect", which just lays down the challenge. Spending 1 week just on cutting & buffing tells me it's gonna be good, but it also makes you a madman if you then want to drive it LOL
