Exactly! It's true that we do not have the actual original versions of the gospels in our grasp (which were written in Hebrew and Aramaic), but many early Christians did preach in different languages and even translated to other languages so they could reach more people.

In addition to the Ethiopic translation, there are also very early Coptic and Nubian translations. Bruce Metzger has a nice synopsis of these early manuscripts in "The Bible In Translation".

@Dericka Michelle I remember speaking in a church in Dallas TX and the title of my sermon was, "Christ was not an American" and you would have thought I had released false teaching into the service... They did not like what the Bible clearly taught about Jesus being a person of color. Sad, but we can see how easy it was for the first century Jews to have similar misconceptions about who the Messiah "just had to be." I think it's best to just stick to what the Bible actually says. When Jesus tells Peter that he'll build his church on this rock, he doesn't say that he will build his church on Peter, rather he will build his church on the proclamation that Jesus is the Christ (this is the first time Peter has declared Jesus to be the Christ). We see in the apostolic age that the gospel spreads through Peter, but also through many people when Peter isn't even around. Peter was a key presence in the early church, but wasn't a single or final authority. The authority was spread amongst the apostles, who were not replaced after they left. The authority in the early scripture accounts is then passed on to local church gatherings, and not to a bishop or episcopal structure. Of course many people appointed bishops, but I don't think this was what Christ had in mind for the structure of his church. So I completely reject the papacy and I fellowship in congregationally led and elder guided churches. I hope that makes sense and I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.

I would jesus give Peter "the keys to the kingdom" and that "the gates of hades shall not prevail against the church"- built upon Peter. Firstly the context the this is significant, In essence jesus is now transferring power and authroity to St Peter which he has taken away from the high priest (who previous held the keys to the kingdom ie the temple) However this church built on Peter is way more symbolic. The church is like a bride and jesus is the groom. In ancient jewish customs the groom would prepare a place to live for his groom before they are married (some can stay betrothed for some time until a house is built) That's why Jesus says I go now to prepare a place for you. I'm trying to avoid getting to technical but I would advice you listen to Trent horn on the papacy. I must say though even though I agree with the papacy and the authority of the holy father. I do not agree with most of his standings . The pope is infallible not impeccable. Peter taught to love your neighbor but would not done with the gentiles (paul rebuked him for this ) Peter taught infallibly but he was by no means impeccable he even denied God thrice.

He, like the other apostles, had authority that Jesus had given him. Again though, we're not told anywhere in scripture that this authority was meant to be passed down through a line of papacy. The papacy comes from superimposing meaning onto what Jesus said, and a desire to put in place a mediator to our mediator. But we don't need one. We have Jesus. We have his word.

Peter is mentioned more than any other apostle and in order of importance Peter is named first with judas being named last. The words "Holy Trinity" isn't even in the bible yet we believe it to be true. Then why does jesus tell Peter whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven why does he give him this powerful authority? All 12 apostles were seen as rulers of the kingdom of God but Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter so that he could take on that name and he was given the keys to the kingdom "keys" is symbolic of the authority that he would now hold. And that whatever he bound on earth would be bound in heaven. He stripped israel of that authroity and gave it to Peter. Many people flocked to Peter some even just to be covered by his shadow so that they may be healed. We are all mediators for each other hear on earth. If living in African for over 1000 years doesn't make you an African then I don't know what will. And the point really is that Christianity was not a European invention, but predates Europe's presence in Africa. Christianity doesn't belong to White Men any more than it belongs to Black Men. The gospel is God's!

Black Folks are trying to find their identity in a religion introduced to them by White Folks. Thank you. I think Athanasius etc just happened to be in a sociopolitical reality influenced by Rome and Greece because they were empires. It still doesn't take away from the essence of what they were teaching. Remember that christians were heavily persecuted by these powers. Ethiopia developed its Christian belief through their connection to their Jewish heritage but the message is essentially the same. That's what matters, the message of an all powerful God who sends His son to save ALL humanity. It may be taught through different cultural lenses (because people receive messages differently) but it's still the same universal message. PS Augustine, at least, was aware of Paganism in Rome and probably what he saw locally and consciously rejected these things. It makes sense that he wasn't going to use it as a point of reference. I'm also aware that Mark the gospel writer taught in Africa. With all the trade and travel at that time, it is not unthinkable that these early Christians were directly influenced by Jesus' followers who were always beyond the Jewish community, if you read the scriptures keenly.

Willy S The exact ethnic make up of some these apostolic fathers' isn't entirely certain. Some may have in fact been black.

Not a surprise if there were any. At least in the east the Egyptians had been in contact with the Sudan and Ethiopia for centuries before (via the Nile). Somalia also had major trade ports used by the Roman Empire for far east trade. It shouldn't be a surprise if the church had some intellectuals from the Sub Sahara. I'm not sure about the West of Africa but the Kingdom of Mali certainly traded with Berber Arabs in the high middle ages and picked up Islam from them as well. It wouldn't be a surprise if there was some Christian presence in that region early on.
