In 17/18 United had a much better defence, it was Mourinho’s famous “second season” and United finished 2nd. Obviously de Gea was outstanding and still saved many points. But in 14/15 they had a shit defence so de Gea really needed to carry that team on his own.

An honourable mention, definitely, he was closs. But definitely not one of 7 best individual seasons... Lampard (09/10), Drogba (also 09/10) and Terry (04/05) were all better individual seasons from Chelsea players.

I think the difference between the 3 is that Dutch and Portuguese clubs have a history of nurturing youth and creating the prime environments for their players, but French clubs don’t do that quite as well. However, France do produce a higher quantity of world class talent, but they end up moving abroad very quickly. Dutch and Portuguese clubs won their UCL‘s when playing abroad was less common, which is why these days they’re in the same boat as French clubs, barring Ajax almost reaching the final a couple years ago and Porto winning in 2004.
