From Erling Haaland, who has already far exceeded the achievements of his father Alf-Inge Haaland at the age of 22, to AC Milan legend Cesare Maldini's son Paolo Maldini, who had a decent career, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of footballers who - against all the odds - became even better players than their talented fathers.

I think this pressure will effect brothers too, the pressure on Ethan Mbappe and Jobe Bellingham is so big now its insane. Especially on Jobe who was once touted as the most talented brother. It makes the task so much harder, still possible though and their name might help them get more oppurtunities. It's importent for them to play their own games though.
@areebsiddiqui758
@areebsiddiqui758 Жыл бұрын
I'd say it's the opposite. Your brother takes the limelight and focus off you allowing you to do your thing quietly but you also get opportunities because of the surname. Chelsea only signed Thorgan Hazard because of Eden and whilst it never worked out for him with us, we gave him the platform and development for his career.

@@areebsiddiqui758 I can see that working in some instances, but ony if there is not that much of an age gap between when the brothers break through. There is only 2 years between Thorgen and Eden, so both could push there way to try and be the best one. Jobe will constantly be compared to Jude's numbers etc, which will be very unfair and what ultimetley sees many players decline.

This is related to the whole father-son football discussion so I'll say this. When Marcus Thuram got booked for diving in the World Cup final, his father who was in the stands had a dead stare on him. One I was expecting, at least in the honourable mentions, was Wojciech Szczęsny. His father Maciej was also a goalkeeper, who won 7 caps for Poland, and won the Polish League 4 times with 3 different clubs, in addition to 3 Polish Cups, one League Cup, Polish Supercup, and Runner-up in the League. And Wojciech had to replaced Buffon in Juventus. There are few bigger shoes to fill in football, and he did a great job.

Stuart Cash was a decent enough football league stalwart, his son is a Premier League regular who just defended against Messi and Mbappe at the World Cup. I went back and looked at career achievements for Danny and Daley Blind. What a pair! It could be argued either way as to which was a better player. Danny won the UCL, UEFA Cup, and UCWC with Ajax and 42 caps with the Netherlands. He was a key figure in the Ajax side that won the UCL. Of course both men won many Dutch domestic trophies while at Ajax. Daley won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, & League Cup with Man United and finished third at the 2014 World Cup with the Netherlands, among 91 caps. I would argue Danny had the slightly more successful club career while Daley was a more important player for the Netherlands than his father.

Mark Bellingham is a well respected former footballer. Mark played for Met Police and England C and was an absolute goal machine for many West Midlands teams when he came up here. Sadly he got a bad knee injury which curtained his career progression in terms of football. But he scored 40 goals in a season for my team, many of them from stupid angles that aren't possible, lol. That being said he of course had a career outside of football as a policeman in the West Midlands Police force. He was a copper on the streets as well as banging in a stupid number of goals each season. Amongst other roles he was a race relations officer. He is married to Denise and a while later had a kid called Jude. That's a story kidda.

*ummm i feel a need to correct the record about eidur gudhonsson being a regular during his Barcelona spell. In truth he was played a lot more sporadically at Barca and the majority of his appearances were from the bench. His transfer was a somewhat strange one from a Barca perspective but the timing of it explains a lot. It was a transfer that was brilliant for Chelsea given Eidur’s age at the time. He was one of the players signed in what was to become Frank Rijkaard’s final season as Barca coach. It was a very scattergun approach that signed players more for superficial reasons over what they can offer relative to something the team needs. Gudjonsson for all his goals scored at Chelsea struggled to really convince in the Barca system. By the time Barca had had unbelievable success in their first season under pep, Txiki Beguiristain was forced to sign only the players specifically requested rather than giving a whole bunch of random players that the coach never asked for thrown in his lap and forced to integrate. Still in spite of all that Pep still gave him minutes during that treble season and Eidur accepted the situation and didn’t complain or create unnecessary drama that would destabilize the team. He was a pro all the way through and I’m honestly happy for him that he got to be part of that amazing team that was having that incredible moment, albeit with minimal involvement in the decisive matches.

You should look into the Alonso family. His Grandfather is a Madrid legend and his father also player for them. All 3 of them went on to represent Spain at the National level. Not sure if anyone else has had this kind of success.

Another honourable mention to former Manchester United player, Argentina International, and Libertadores winner Juan Sebastián Verón. One of the best midfielders I've seen play. His father Juan Ramón "La Bruja" (the witch) Verón was a great Estudiantes player who won the Libertadores thrice and even beat Manchester United in the Intercontinental Cup in 1967. This is even more impressive when you understand that Estudiantes has never been one of the big clubs in Argentina. But his son was better, Juan Sebastián "La Brujita" (the little witch) Verón also got to win the Libertadores in 2009 and just barely lost to Pep Guardiola's Barcelona -perhaps the best team of all time-, where they were about to win before Barcelona tied it in the 88th minute and eventually won in extra time. Verón by then though had already played in Manchester United and been one of the best players for Argentina for years, even getting to be captain. One of the best midfielders Argentina has ever had.

Juan Veron played for Panathinaikos back in the early 70s I think and is still remembered by the fans. There were rumours that Panathinaikos would sign Juan Sebastian every year after his 30th birthday but it never happened.
