While the new generation Toyota Tundra continues to face stiff competition, it has become a favorite truck for Automotive Engineer David Chao. In fact, he bought one - a 2022 Tundra TRD Pro - but he sold it later on to buy the Lexus GX. Now that he had a chance to drive the Tundra again, David is having some regrets selling his Tundra. So in this video, David goes over 7 reasons why the Toyota Tundra is still a great truck and why he still loves it.

I once said, I would never buy a Toyota again. That is until I test drove my tundra hybrid. I fell in love right away with the speed, comfort, safety gadgets, a smooth ride and a beautiful looking truck. I have no regrets.

I still love the Toyota brand especially with the truck and suvs. I still own my 02’ Tundra with 247,000k which has been well taken care with it’s maintenance. I just simply find it crazy that what should be a working man or woman s truck, costs so darn much. I personally will never fall into this payment lifestyle my fellow Americans are willing to pay. -Great review of the new tundra

Don’t forget…. You can buy a lower SR5 but with the premium package and air bag package for less than $55k. So you get the big screen and an air bag rear end great for towing for $20k less than a TRD pro. I know because I have one.

Great presentation David, I’ve been waiting to see what else Toyota does as far tweaking this truck. I'm sold on Toyota's reliability with two Camry's and my 05 Toyota Tundra Limited Double cab with 318,692 miles and still running strong. I plan on getting a 1794 version Imax 6.5 bed within 5 to 6 months. Even with my current Tundra I need the 6.5 " bed for my sound equipment for my Band and sometimes I tow a 6x12 V nose trailer. So I'm hoping the reliability carries over to this New Generation Tundra.

Hi David. I just took delivery of my tundra pro last week. Love it this far. I decided to put some black door plastic edge guards on all 4 doors. I noticed when I was driving I rolled down the rear backseat window when I was driving around 40 mph and I was hearing a loud noise coming from under the rear wheel well. It was so loud it made the passenger front seat shake. I thought the truck was falling apart. I stopped on the side of the road and got to thinking what could this sound be so I pull the plastic door edges off and guess what no more loud sounds.

Another great video! I am cross-shopping mid-size vs 1/2 ton. I am very interested in the pros/cons of the 2024 Tundra Quad Cab that will come wit the 6’ bed vs. the 2024 Tacoma w the optional 6’ bed. I prefer the size of the mid-size, but like a 6’ bed for hauling camping gear. My camper only weighs 2,900 lbs, so either truck can easily handle the camper. Payload will be an issue and would like to see 1,500 lb in the Tacoma and 1,600 in the Tundra.

Toyota is dependability and reliability 😊. David Thanks for the Tundra tour. I am not a hybrid or an EV fan myself. They will depreciate as they age.
@mattlafleur1356
@mattlafleur1356 8 ай бұрын
The reason hybrid and EVs depreciate is that the battery bank exceeds the value of the used vehicle so the value becomes zero. Toyota's iForce design has extra two batteries so it will not suffer from the depreciation problem you refer to. iForce only uses electric motors as a torque supplement so the battery power requirements are dramatically less relative to a "traditional" hybrid or EV.

Hi David, I like Toyota vehicles. I have an older taco, nice dependable vehicle. I’m doing a lot of travel trailer camping, and never see many Tundras pulling campers. I’m assuming they don’t have the towing capacity of domestic trucks, especially the diesel versions. I’m surprised Toyota does not build a 3/4 ton version to increase towing capacity. The camping world is huge, and growing in popularity, Toyota is missing out on a large market share! Also Toyota is missing the mark with fuel economy, compared to the competition. Thanks for your videos and engineering prospective, and working with The Car Care Nut. 👍

I am good to do the same. Tired of USA brands sticking it to me. One big lesson was a gmc Van I own. Headlights kept going out, switch in dash would get hot and melt dash so I couldn't even mount the switch. Replaced it all. I have a dealer service manual. Wiring chart shows one chart for USA domestic version and one chat for export (overseas) version. The domestic version wiring for headlights is unprotected. No fuses or relays. Export version has fuses and relays. So...??? Gmc doesn't care about letting their own people in their own country getting the best quality? Nope. Leave off the fuses and relays so it will melt the dash and make you panic with no headlights and take to dealer. Just one example out of a gazillion.

Can you please explain why ALL 3rd GEN tundras suffer low vent pressure when the heater is set to face vents. Even at full blast, almost no air flows through the vent. Heated air flows strong through rear vents, just not fronts. However, AC blows strong through all vents. So, it's just the heater through face vents. As of today (01/13/2024) there is no recall or TSB for a fix. All the tundra forums mention this flaw. This can't be by design right????? Please share your thoughts!

I think the Tundra is a great truck. I would not agree about your feelings on the hybrid version. Yes it is faster and more torque than the regular 3.4 non hybrid but the non hybrid 3.4 is also a very strong engine. The hybrid version is an additional $3,900 US dollars and that is hard to justify for me. I also think that the hybrids are not selling as well because of the price penalty and peoples perception that the hybrid should get better gas mileage. This hybrid was not necessarily designed for gas mileage but for torque especially while towing. I also don't like the hybrid because it weighs an extra 400 pounds and the battery occupies the storage under the rear seat and I think it is nice to have the storage.

That is EXACTLY the truck I'm looking for. The Limited trim level, I-Force Max, L length box, TRD package 4X4. I've visited and called dealerships all over the GVRD, including one Lexus dealership and what I'm looking for just isn't available anywhere! I have mostly owned F-150's. My current vehicle is an F-150. I bought a RAV4 for my wife a couple years ago and I have owned a Corolla. Now I'm looking to get a Tundra. I need a full size truck to pull our RV and do multiple tasks at home hauling landscaping and building supplies. Oh, okay can order one if I don't mind waiting 1.5 to 2 years on a wait list. But I in fact DO mind. The practical functionality and reliability balanced with reasonable simplicity are what has my interest. The power is definitely adequate for my needs. I need a long box version for the space. I will be hauling a quad in the box when pulling our travel trailer. But this search is getting beyond frustrating and discouraging. I think the materials they build these trucks out of is "unibtainium".😉 If my search doesn't yield results over this winter, I may have to look at a different brand.

Excellent review! I picked a Limited iForceMax w/ 6.5' bed and it is everything I could hope for and more. An extremely well-thought-out truck. Quality-wise, it stands up to anything. The interior is more functional than luxurious than a Ram1500 or a GMC Sierra Denali, but I did not buy it to be a luxury vehicle. It is my work truck. Would have bought the SR5, but the Hybrid engine is not available in that trip level. It has the 12-speaker JBL speaker system, and the woofer takes up a good chunk of the space on the rear-driver-side storage space behind the seat. You also lose the rear storage space under the backseat to the Hybrid battery. So that is something to consider. The bed-step is $399 and is too expensive in my opinion but worth it. This bed is more accessible than my '08 Tacoma without it. Our dealers down in Texas are forced to buy their vehicles from Toyota distributorships which add many options before selling it to the dealership. If you can pick and choose what you want on the truck, that is the way to go. BTW, the PVM monitor is a fantastic option and saved my bacon many times in tight spaces.

With all due respect the interior is not more functional or luxurious than a ram. Looking at all the plastic everywhere on the doors and dash, it’s just a sea of hard plastic. The center console is useless and that sliding door is flimsy and cheap like the rest of the truck. Toyota dropped the ball. I really wanted to like the tundra but I just can’t. Add insult to injury, capstone trim only has Lexus quality leather. Other than that it has nothing going for it. It even has the same cheap plastic vents as the sr5. Lol!

@@lukaszmatyszewski7198 I agree that the Tundra is not more luxurious than a RAM or GMC. But all things considered, I preferred the layout of the Tundra over the makes. The quality of the switches and buttons in particular. I agree the center console storage needs improvement. I think Toyota recognizes that. In the SR-5 trim, the plastic console leaves a lot to be desired. But the interior in my 15-year-old Tacoma is just as cheap and has held up amazingly well. If I wanted to spend well north of $80K for a truck, the Sierra Denali is the way to go. But again, this is my work truck.

My 2 complaints is the wind noise and i have to dry the door frames whenever i wash the truck. Nonwater getd inside the truck but it gets into the door jams

You'll be lucky to make it 10k miles without 3rd Gen issues: bearing failures, noises, broken seat trim or recalls. Toyota will get this right, but it's likely taking 5 years to do it. Sad situation.

@@fnrlegs22 I agree with your views. I own a 2015 TRD Pro and will not trade it for the new Tundra until this new truck has cycled through at least 5 years. Hopefully by than Toyota will sort out all the issues and shortcomings.

Toyota needs to also deliver on human engineering and utilitarian design. Still no bed step, and other usefull features for a truck. Likewise, Toyota need to do their Kaisen on the toyota dealer service quality is a shame .

I rented one for a week. Pros: Good passing power, soft ride and great headlights. Cons: mileage is no better than other N/A V8’s, complicated engine: has two additional radiators for the intercoolers with separate coolant loops and electric fuel pump. Similar to a BMW engine with more hoses that will degrade with time and temperature. Pass

@@japerezo75 I have the hybrid Plat 4x4, I'm consistently getting 20-21 over the last 5 months with total mileage current at 15k. Running a loop that consists of climbing 4700ft to 6k ft, city to home, with speeds for freeway at 83mph and highway 71mph. of which I cross a pass at just over 6k, to drop down into a valley and climb back to 6k to make it home. Impressed your Tahoe gets 18mpg. My sisters didn't get that, nor did our 2018 Sequoia, of which we were lucky to get 15mpg. The benefits of the turbo-hybrid are you get a response like a diesel truck, without the problems of having a diesel truck (Def, higher oil consumption in GMC, having to deal with regen and winter time games you have to play to ensure the truck starts).

I don't like those indentation and similar design marks. Although I've never been in a collision thankfully, this just seems to make for a bigger nightmare of a repair bill. Good to know the truck has substance, but such a style choice is jarring to me..
