Question regarding Brett Kollman’s breakdown. He mentioned that Bowen likes to run nickel 3-3-5 (3 interior d linemen plus Burns on the edge). This would mean Kayvon would only get on the nickel packages in obvious passing downs. Are we really gonna see Jordan Phillips and Boogie play more this year than Kayvon?

Sounds to me like Dunleavy has been hanging out with Pat Leonard, both of whom are good guys and capable journalists, but I question their football acumen. I like Pat but we have divergent views about the Giants win-loss prospects for the upcoming season. Pat's from the Philly area, so he can't help it. It's hard to listen to guys who have limited or no experience playing football prognosticate about the sport. In jest, if you want to goose Pat Leonard, tell him you're a lot more concerned about the Eagles, whom the Giants decimated to close out the season. After he squawks, remind him that the score was 21-0 when the Eagles pulled their starters. I give Daboll a lot of credit. After a horrendous start to the season, the G-Men finished strong and were 3 very doable plays from being 9-8. I'd be shocked if the Giants win fewer than 10 games this season. Ryan made some good points about the secondary bearing the brunt of Bowens system. At least some of the secondary's success will be contingent upon a strong pass rush. For that reason, I really wish we still had Leonard Williams. As for the O-Line, let's assume the coaches know more about the players than we do. I'm trusting that they won't contort the line to accommodate Evan Neal, i.e. placing Runyan at RG has a larger purpose than to compensate for Neal's shortcomings. If that's the case, then please trade Neal + draft picks for a top tier tackle, if possible. I disagree vehemently with Ryan's assessment of the RB & TE rooms. We have a boatload of talent in each sector, and we're no longer held hostage to the "if and when" Saquon twists his ankle or Waller pops his hammy. We'll be better than fine - strength through depth and diversity of skills at both positions. Ryan is correct that DJ should just go out and do what he does best, come hell what may. I give him 3, maybe 4 games before Lock is taking snaps behind center. As a former QB, I've dealt with knee and cervical issues. It takes 2 years to normalize after an ACL. Subluxated discs in the neck compress on the nerve root. It's no joke. As I'm not aware of any opponent going light on DJ, his departure is not a matter of if, but when. At this point in his career, Lock may be better suited to this offense. Lots of weapons. He has a better pocket presence than DJ in part because he's not looking to bust out of the pocket when the heat's on. He's busy reading the field. He's not afraid to pull the trigger and has exercised better judgement under Pete Carroll's tutelage and working alongside Geno Smith. Here's how the experience unfolds... When you're sitting in the pocket and reading the field, you're so focused that you don't even notice the shit that's swirling around you. Some of my best throws were made with monsters bearing down on me. I'd figure out what happened by listening to crowd reaction, literally. Lock has that ability. He's cool under pressure. By contrast, DJ gets rattled when he feels the heat, which is why he usually just cuts and runs or throws an interception. He doesn't hang in there and read the field. He definitely loses his focus. That's a primary reason why he's not good at it. At his core, DJ is not cool under pocket pressure. It's written all over his face and it's not a good look for the other guys in the huddle. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Tell you guys this much, I cut loose from the pocket more often because guys weren't open. In that instance, instinctively I'd know to get out while I still could & see if I could shake things loose in the secondary. If coverage held up, then I'd get on my horse and do my best to make the D regret it. And though I was blessed with speed, running was almost always my 3rd option. It's not as much of a thought process as it is being hyper-focused in the present moment. That's when the game slows down and you can move quicker than the other guys because you're two or three steps ahead mentally. That's how a QB functions effectively when the heat's on. BTW, if the pocket collapsed without exit, without grounding, I'd throw the ball away, if possible, or step up and take the sack to mitigate the loss of yards. Only on a couple of occasions did I get sandwiched. It really sucks pulling sods of grass from your face mask & all, but it comes with the territory and if you don't like it, then don't play QB. DJ will succeed if he let's the RBs, WRs & TEs do the work. He has an excellent mid-range passing game. Hopefully, Nabers & Co will help him learn to trust his long game. But if he plays like he normally does, I give him 3-4 weeks before he's benched or, God forbid, carted off. What I love about your podcast is that you guys know football from experience, so hopefully some of what I've written makes sense. Keep up the good work and, as always, let's go Big Blue.

I honestly think pat does a good job giving a fair assessment of the team regardless of his Philly roots. A lot of fans just can't take the truth regardless if its staring them right in the face. Me personally im not big on DJ or Lock. Lock throws into coverage way too often for my liking and he has a tendency to miss badly. I do think he would make the season more interesting. Just bc of his willingness to throw the ball down the field something DJ flat out refuses to do.
@DEILLANYG
@DEILLANYG 9 күн бұрын
All I ever here about DJ is he doesn't have time and i think that's a bunch of bs. It might not be on every play but there are most definitely instances where he's had time to make more beneficial throws down the field instead of taking the shorter higher percentage throw. We'll never go anywhere with him playing like that
@michaelmeenan5522
@michaelmeenan5522 9 күн бұрын
@@DEILLANYGUnderstood. My assessment of this Giants squad is based upon what I've seen the past two seasons. Before then, there was almost an 8-year gap in my watching football regularly. Pat, on the other hand, has witnessed much of the dysfunction that I missed. This may account for our differing perspectives. From what I've seen, in 2022 the Giants made the playoffs. In 2023, instead of bolstering the O-Line, Schoen loaded up on weapons, which was a huge mistake. Last season, I spent a lot of time in Buffalo and watched practically every Giants and Bills games. As we move forward into 2024, similarities between the two squads are beginning to emerge. And while the Giants lost to the Bills, most would agree that the Giants outplayed them. As for Lock, he beat the Eagles before they totally collapsed, and brought the Seahawks into the 4th quarter against the 49ers trailing 21-16. So, I'm willing to see how a more mature Drew Lock plays with this Giants offense. I appreciate DJ, but I'm sort of done with his mayhem. Hopefully, we'll connect during mid-season and see where we are. Til then, all the Best.
@michaelmeenan5522
@michaelmeenan5522 9 күн бұрын
@@DEILLANYGAbsolutely. DJ's short passing game and running definitely limits the team's offensive potential and results in lower point totals. With Nabers, Hyatt and Slayton, he'll have deep threat options. It would be a revelation if he somehow tapped into that capability. We all hope he does, but very few would bet on it. We know Drew Lock won't be shy about cutting loose a few bombs. We can agree that it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Why is the O line still a disaster? Do the Giants have any competent scouts? I have never seen a team so flustered on fixing the O line. Nothing else will work in the offense if they don't fix the O line for good and have the same players work together as a unit. It's astounding to me that there is so much confusion. I have no confidence they will fix it in time for the season. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Lots of negativity...could be justified, might not be correct, however. The defense should be good - IF, IF, IF the O-line is at least serviceable, there are enough weapons with YAC capability that Jones will find targets. I respect Ryan's take; however, I place more value on the addition of Nabers than the loss of Barkley.

So Joe is 0 for 5 on drafting and acquiring olineman? Massive busts in the draft across the board. Time to bring in some Dallas scouts or hire one of their dudes for GM and give a chance for Jones to cook in the remaining years of his contract. Remember, Andrew Thomas was a Jason Garrett pick and Jason came from the consistent winner that knows how to draft and develop offensive lineman down in Dallas. If Daboll and Joe crash and burn this year we can bring back Garrett and maybe even reunite him with Dak next year. Would love to see an ex-NFL Coach of the Year and Giants QB, Jason Garrett lead the Giants.
