00:00 Introduction
Aging is something that's happening to all of us and if you're a regular follower, you can probably see that I'm getting less and less hair here on my forehead. Of course, Preston, on the other hand, does never age -- he gets younger. In a society and an employment market where youth is highly valued, what can you do as a more seasoned gentleman? It seems many men turn to fashion trying to negate the implications of getting older today. By doing so, they end up looking like a man in a mid-life crisis or beyond trying really hard to look like a teenager which just makes you look like someone who doesn't know what he's doing.
Now, the good news is, there are certainly ways that can make you look younger in a positive way because they don't make you look too young but somewhat age-appropriate without looking old or stodgy. Youthful clothing is generally trendier; it's bolder, it's more colorful, and you have to take it in the right dose to make it work for your age. The goal is to find clothing that suits your age but it's also modern enough that it makes you feel updated and fresh.
So without further ado, here are the eight mistakes we see men making trying to appear younger than they are:
02:08 1. Wearing athletic clothing in public.
03:59 2. Wearing sneakers at the wrong time.
06:02 3. Wearing baseball caps as a casual accessory in everyday life.
07:34 4. Wearing trendy, tight clothing
09:42 5. Wearing unflattering jeans
11:30 6. Dressing like a college boy.
13:31 7. Wearing excessive colors and patterns.
16:15 8. Using young and bold scents
17:47 Bonus tip: Body Odors
19:13 Outfit Rundown

You know, I completely agree. Keep yourself bathed and well groomed, but dress for comfort. We baby boomers did our bit when we were younger because even at work, many of us had to wear suits. Now is our time of life to dress comfortably. My grandpa after he was 60, wore coveralls everyday for the rest of his life. He couldn't have cared less how he appeared to others.

I'll never give up my Wrangler jeans! Ever! With that said, my biggest pet peeve is older guys dyeing their hair to hide the grey. The coloring is usually bad and too deep and you can spot it a mile away. Just get a high and tight haircut and go with that instead, or else embrace the grey!

@edennis8578
@edennis8578 3 жыл бұрын
So men have the same as women. Dark dye is almost always a mistake. If you're trying to hide gray, go lighter. If your hair was red, stay away from red because it's very hard to get red to look right on an older person and on gray hair. You don't want to look like your hair belongs on someone else and you don't want to end up with pink hair (if you're going for a natural look).

@@peacelove1854 You could argue casual wear is rule based also. For example would someone who favours wearing tracksuits and hoodies feel it would be acceptable to wear a pair of cap toe oxfords with a tracksuit? I doubt it. Why? Because cap toe oxfords are at the other end of the spectrum, and are not sports footwear. Now that is a 'rule' that remains. But people seem to frown on the rules of formal wear. I have never understood why people feel it is appropriate to wear a pair of trainers with a suit. There are less casual shoes available that mimick these trainers but still retain a form fitting to be worn with a suit. Yes I'm glad the class system has disappeared from classic clothing because it means any man no matter your status can dress well at any budget. The modern satorialist no longer holds onto the rules of: No Brown in town etc, but certain rules are based on tradition so that everyone is dressed in the same way so that the occasion takes center stage, and not a show off peacock who wants to steal the limelight. Plus, rules exist in formal wear to flatter the person's body type, and so that the fabric or cloth the outfit is made from can drape in the right way. Yes fashion has influenced classic style, but Fashion breaks the rules for the sake of it, just for dramatic effect, and often with disastrous results

There are so many factors to consider. Cultural, financial, geographical to name justa few. I always say that most people dress with what they can afford. You showed that old man wearing a baseball cap and a Tee, he looks like someone that lives in the streets, what option can someone like that have? In my country, shirts tucked inside the pants, mocassins, and panama hats would be considered 'old man's clothes'. I'm on my late 50s and work with event productions full of young people, DJs etc, many trendy types. My solution? I wear all black and never, ever showing any brand. And even though I look younger than I am I want to be perceived as sober and discreet.

I would say baseball caps also depends on the culture. There’s nothing odd about a 10, 20, 50, and 80 year old all walking around the mall in them in the south, or at least Alabama, but if you showed up to church in one that’s a bit different.

I think you can still wear t-shirt with open shirt (flannel) over it even after 30s (I hope, I am 29 and turning 30 soon, and like wearing flannel over t-shirt when not in office). You just need to think about the solid mutted color t-shirt and not bold colors or patterns. Also it should be event appropriate. Like its okay to wear that at gril party or into the pub with friends as casual wear, but not so good to wear that in office. But I think you already know that if you are wathing GG or RMRS for some time.

Oh Jesus Christ Tom, what do you mean by you can't get away with it? Do you mean that women are going to reject you if they see that? There was one after shave or cologne (it was too long ago for me to remember) Axe had which smelled pretty amazing, and smelled notably different in that specific formula vs same scent in other formulas. I still mourn that it was a temporary product because it smelled like wonderful dry spiced mead. Not the cloying sugary kind of mead, but the sort where you have let the process use up the sugars to make a pleasant dry drink. I am pretty particular about my mead preferences, and to accidentally find a scent like that was magical, and I was really sad to find out it had gotten discontinued because it was my favourite scent to use at the time. Then again I am a girl so my perfume preferences isn't particularly masculine.

Every time I watch an episode, I cannot help but remember all of the classic fashion advice and attention to detail that I have learned over the years and say, "It all makes sense now" as I watch with a new appreciation for the clothing choices they make. I may not be able to afford all of the quality items that I'd like to have but at least I feel better using the ones that I do have...thanks to all of you at the Gentleman's Gazette!

I agree with most of this and it's awesome advice. One thing that I find important about style is also to express one's personality. I've seen many older guys who wear colourful bold patterns with shirts and even suits and it looks fresh, creative, fun and suits them. There is an ex publisher of a style magazine in New York who embodies this with great aplomb and I admire him greatly.

I disagree on the sweatpants. The reason Ben Affleck looked bad in that picture was because his sweats were too big and baggy compared to the slimmer, close-to-the-body sweats you showed on the younger guys. The trick is for the sweat pants to be fitted and not tight. Also, it's not about looking "young," but looking "your best." Even young adults make bad fashion choices. I think the reason young adults can pull off certain trends better than older adults is because they still have perky, "kissable" faces compared to older faces which may look "sad," "tired," "mean" and/or "droopy."

With all due respect, there is an issue here with the presumption that a man always wants to look younger. This may be true after 60, certainly, but on the other hand, it can be a very, very bad idea for a man to look under 35, in a wide range of contexts. Most men are far better off looking 40, than looking 25.
@gentlemansgazette

Dropping my "youthful" style touches actually made me look younger. I've always liked picking "nice" clothes, so that's not the issue, but I'm old enough that more than once in my life, it's been ok for guys to wear baggy clothes, long shirts, etc and working as a DJ, I've always been able to have kind of a long-haired, rock and roll look. Not that I was trying to look younger, that's just what I was used to since my teen years. Then one day I saw myself in a video, so I could see myself from different angles, and realized that the style I was rocking was no longer flattering. Now I'm at the barber once a month, keeping it short, clothes fitting the way they're supposed to and I look ten years younger.

How to dress young? When dressing casually never, ever, EVER, tuck anything in, be that t-shirts, Polo shirts, or button-ups. Nothing screams "I'm old" then tucking in anything other then business/formal attire.

I think polo shirts look weird tucked in, especially because they tend to pillow out around the waist unless they are extremely slim and fitted. However, I would say tucking in a button-down into a pair of slacks or chinos is essential or you will look sloppy

@@EchoMountain47 Besides dress shirts that are cut to be tucked in, anything else would only tuck well in a photoshoot; the slightest movements would usually leads to a messy tuck or a muffin top look. I am 58, my methods are: -lightweight fabrics combined with razor sharp tailoring, no more heavy flannels - a great haircut - no, zero denim - get a tab or at minimum sun on face - great quality smaller knot read Hermes or Italian ties - avoid bow ties unless formal wear involved - little caffeine and more fresh clean water - majority vegetarian diet - 7 days a week light exercise - varied, updated new. sources Great video, one of your best !

Letting nature take its course visually and wearing age-appropriate things is only possible if you have a partner or are looking for one of the same age. Not if you are looking for a partner who is at least 20 years younger. Then you have to do something to make it look more youthful.
