I've had my FTDX10 for about a month now. Absolutely love it, but it's definitely not perfect. Pretty much all of my issues relate to UI/UX, with the biggest one being that you can't get to the main function menu when using a mouse and display! If I want to change any of the settings deeper in the radio I need to reach over and click the function knob to bring the menu up, THEN I can go back to the mouse and my big screen to navigate around and change what I need to. Not a huge deal but it really should be easier.

Hi Bob, enjoyed your video. There is a way to connect a box inline with the 7300's mic cable to initiate all those memories--aftermarket, of course. BTW, no HDMI because there's a horrendous licensing fee--not open source. hope you're enjoying Idaho! 73, Dave, KEØOG

I really love my FTDX10. That radio handles the noise in Atlanta so well. On a good note a lot of what you have is software so the possibility of change is out there. If I could add anything it would be a split screen operation with the external monitor. Maybe asking too much here. Just seems like it would be nice to have different information on the monitor instead of cloning the main display. Not a deal breaker but a nice to have. I also agree on swapping the inner and outer VFO wheels. Seems like that could be a software function also. Like in your CS button, so select VFO Swap and every time your turn on CS your wheels are swapped.

I've had my FTDX10 for just over a year. Love the rig and have made great contacts and always receive good audio reports. But there are a few annoyances, mostly in the UI, as has been mentioned. My biggest gripe is the lack of SWR scan capabilities. Heck, even my $450 Xiegu G90 has that capacity. And frankly the G90 also has a superior tuner. Very good Points Bob, my biggest bitch is I don't have a dx10 lol. Seriously been considering picking one up this year, but the biggest draw back I just seen in your video for me is not being able to see all the meters at once , I use that all the time even at home on my 7300 as I'm tuning my tuner/amp or adjusting for digital modes, I like to see everything at the same time.

My MFJ tuner has multiple inputs for antennas, I just use that. The other gripes about wanting it to be like a IC7300 I can't relate to because I upgraded from a FT991A. Thanks for this, I'm still enjoying my FTDX10, it's great for CW.

I agree with swapping the VFO's. Tip... Once you press the band button, you can roll the big ring to make your selection. It gives you more time. Also I'd like to mouse wheel the frequency like SDR.

I totally agree with you on the horrible DVI-d connector and problems with connectivity to non DVI-d monitors and the possibility of blowing fuses or worse, the chip itself. I also would love backlit buttons on it so I don't need all the roomlights on to see it. But apart from these faults, love the radio! Thanks for the video......Mike. G4HLT.

2 things... I've seen it mentioned all over already, the scroll wheel on the mouse not being able to adjust frequency, or anything else for that matter. The other, I wish there was an easier way to switch control of the RF gain and SQL. The only way I've seen, is going into the Operation Settings and doing it there. Heck, make it automatic, if I switch to AM or FM, make it SQL automatically, SSB it sets to RF gain.

I agree with you completely. I have owned my FTDX10 for 3months. Having said that I still think it’s the best HF rig under $3000, so the items you mentioned are the difference between a $1400 rig and one costing double that amount.

I like that they just came up with an update to adjust the level on the TX Scope, however, they still have not fixed the Rx and TX Scope issue! Often the Rx and TX Scope displays corrupt screens, more noticeable with smaller Span settings (10kHz)!

At 5:20 where you are talking about moving up to the FM portion, you can just touch the screen where you want to go and get there instantly, or at least I can on my FT-710 and I bet it is the same on the DX10. However, you are definitely correct about a perfect 9. I have owned probably 30 motorcycles and none of them are perfect. I am sure radios are the same. Thanks for the great video! 73's.

Not too many things I have issues with, but I haven’t gone through everything with he radio. The only way to make a perfect radio to build one oneself, but someone will find something not perfect to them. Keep enjoying the FTDX10!!! 73!

I had the same issue with N3FJP logging and wsjt-x on both the FTDX101D and the FTDX10. I had to give up control to one program. Solved: I use the 9 pin serial port on the radio, through a USB to serial converter, to provide data and control to the logging program and the radio's USB port to provide data and control to wsjt-x. I just have to remember to change which radio has control in my logging program. Also, I had to create two instances of wsjt-x: one for each radio. If your only using one radio, not an issue.

I have a remote controller that I bought from one the Chinese websites for $20 and while being smaller than the FH-2 it works fine. You can also home brew one, its just switches and resisitors. A great radio for the price. The biggest problem with the radio is the parametric equalizer is not easy to set up as far as TX audio and the settings are really backwards. I also have a 101MP and it solves some of these problems with more real estate but a whopping price!

I'd love a 1k setting on one of the VFO knobs...any of them. Would also like to see the band menu come up if you touch the Mhz numbers on the screen. This way I wouldnt have to worry about using the band button. Closest thing to a 10 for me would be shoehorning a FTDX10 receiver into a 7300.. :)

The Digital Notch feature introduces distortion on loud signals. On 40 and 80m nets this is a big problem since I can’t have it on to squash the lid tuner uppers. The ft-710 fixed the issue but Yaesu needs to update the dx10

You mentioned the issue with the buttons around the VFO knob. That is why I avoided the FTDX10. I have Gillian Barre syndrome and dexterity is a big issue. I have a 7300 and recently purchased a FT 710. The controls on these radios are much more handicapped friendly.

I don't much care about the type of power connector but generally agree with your gripes. I find the band selection menu times out far too fast despite an earlier firmware update that slows it down a little. I have only had the radio here for a few days so far, I like the single USB cable which in my case goes to a Raspberry Pi running WSJT-X. I too am puzzled by the 2 UARTS.... Being in the UK I have enabled the 70MHz band on this one but it is a shame the menu combines the band with GEN on one on-screen button. Performance of the receiver is impressive as is the very effective noise reduction. Having had a rig with dual receive and a number of antenna ports allowing things like diversity receive I do miss these things on the FTDX-10 but that is not a criticism. It is a compact radio, so ergonomics and features suffer. The rig has done a lot to persuade me that I should splash out on the FTDX-101 at some point...

Any idea what that weird noise/RFI was in like strips across 40m? I had the same thing for a long time, but I lost power once and it hasn't showed back up since so I have no clue what caused it.

Great points. I’ve had my FTDX10 for just over a year. My biggest gripe is the cramped cockpit but I’ve gotten use to it. Second issue would be the power connection, would like to see Powerpoles used (but I’m guessing that’s probably expensive licensing and they want to keep this radio at a fairly entry-level price point). I ended up buying a DVI-D monitor on Amazon for cheap and it’s been great (I didn’t want to risk the DVI to HDMI cable issue that I’ve read about). Thanks for the video. -Chris, K1PRD

HDMI is not used as it requires a heafty license fee from the owners of the technology and DVI is free. Adding the fee onto the price of the radio would become higher priced than toe competition.

Number nine would be no "average" button of the scope... Maybe anyone knows how to resolder it from IC-7300 to FTDX10 ? 😊

Mine periodically has an audio problem, sometimes on receive, the audio sounds like it’s coming through a drive inn movie speaker , very monotone , the only way to get it back to normal is to key the mic. I’ve tried different mics, this will sound like this all day until the mic is pushed and then it is back to normal, then it might not do it for days. Yaesu has looked at this problem twice, Tim Factor can’t fix it. So I bought an Icom 7300.

About one function taking up the whole screen and hiding everything underneath... How about an option to display the waterfall on the external monitor and use the radio's little display for the other intermittently-used utilities?

You forgot one item. The spectrum display has corrupt data in it. It is very hard to notice, but use the CENTER mode, and a SPAN of 10kHz. Every so often you can see a corrupt screen. Record the screen with a cellphone of camera, and then step through it frame-by-frame. You will see what I am talking about! Almost like the FPGA is not fast enough, or the code is not written correctly. Hopefully in the future it will be corrected. I have seen this on 2 FTDX units so far. FTDX-101D and MP are fine. It is more noticeable on stronger signals, S9 to S9+20dB. By the way, why would one not want to see the noise floor on the spectrum display? I want to see weaker signals too, NOT just the strong ones!

Bob the one thing in your list you didnt have was the spectrum scope looks like a kids toy way too fast with the 7300 you can adjust it so it useful! But thats my biggest gripe with Yaesu radios,but i still want one but Yaesu could correct it with a software change! 73

I normally prefer Icom, but loving my FTDX 10. Unbelievable receiver and with a wireless mouse the only button I push is power. Haft to say in a true emergency or field use, I'm grabbing the Icom! 73's all W4WTK

My biggest gripe is the screen timer when on the band screen and when you don't make a selection it put you in you next band stack. I know this was not the case with previous firmware version but the latest version it does this. Which means they changed it to this.

I like my FTDX-10 alot, but why do I have to push the "FUNC" key to bring up the menu? I'd like to be able to pull that up with a mouse click somehere on the screen. The mouse can be used once the menus are up, so why not make it so you can access the menus also with the mouse. Also would like to be able to adjust frequency with the mouse. Both of these functions could be provided in software and would really make the external monitor more useful.

On the fence weither to buy the FTdx10 or go back to the 710 which I tried out for a month. I liked the 710 but I know the filters are much better on the 10 along with easier to access-friendlier functions. I also learned that using a HDMI converter for DVI for external causes a fuse/circuit to blow requiring service to the unit to have it repaired... the 710 has a self resetting one. One of my biggest dislikes on the 710 was having to go into the menu to change contour, notch etc.. and have just a couple seconds before it kicked you back out only having to start over again. Adjusting the DNR ..same issue. I really want to like the 991A, but everyone has told me that it just can't stand up against the 10. I do like how the 991 is layed out. I have also been told that the 10 is to big to use portable.. but a couple inches and 3 pounds difference, is that really a big deal?

Fascinating device. Being that it is an SDR, will a software modification get this transceiver to be able to get into frequencies used by aviation, 108Mhz to 136Mhz AM, or up to 174Mhz, if only for listening? SDR receivers are incredibly versatile. The one in the transceiver is likely in direct sampling Q mode, since I is imaginary. Perhaps if it is taken out of direct sampling Q mode, it may be able to access VHF-high frequencies, maybe even UHF frequencies, if only for listening. I doubt the amplifiers and filters that work on HF would work on VHF.

I'd use the 7300 if the waterfall sensitivity could be adjusted past 20 db. I've made contacts that didn't show up on the display. I could hear them but not see them.

I have had my FTdx10 for over a year and my 7300 for 5. I generally agree with your complaints on the 10 but really enjoy running it. The 7300 is a very high quality radio and I still run it daily

Can you use CAT commands to trigger CW and voice memories? I've got that set up with my 7300. I just haven't figured out how to get a repeating memory or if that is even possible from 7300 CAT control.

A perfect 10 radio would have a bolt on AI module that when I spoke at it to do something like "Make that signal cleaner" or "boost it" The AI would be able to translate what I wanted from normal person to Radio control function. Like if i walked onto a sci0fi ship and said Take me to mars the ship would handle the course, direction, ordering the food, and logistics etc.

I have a simple fix for the band button issue, I fitted a smaller diameter function knob, makes all the difference.

Bob: I feel your pain. But before I post my "bads", I will say that the sensitivity of the RX of this radio is beyond terrific. I have heard/made contact with stations in various contests that were barely visible as a "shard" on the panadapter. Having said that, here are my beefs: 1. Audio/EQ settings: I know that this is Yaesu's attempt to provide maximum customization of the TX audio. Having said that, I can't imagine a more "tortured" methodology for adjusting the TX audio settings. For most hams, just provide a low, middle, and high end boost as well as adjustable compression level and leave it there. The Parametric EQ, and P-Parametric EQ is way too convoluted and complicated for most operators to figure out and master, not to mention getting the best TX audio out of their rigs ! 2. Why couldn't the Yaesu engineers developed an easy way to engage the tune function of an outboard tuner ?? Yes, provide me one button that automatically switches the mode of the XCVR to CW, reduces the power to 10W or so, and cycles an outboard tuner. Instead, we are forced to buy some high priced custom cable to interface with your outboard tuner and then figure out how to share the 10 pin miniDIN with both the ALC and AMP KEYER function of an amp ! So if I am in SSB mode, I must either select CW, or AM to provide a carrier, and then transmit, to activate the outboard tuner and then switch back to the original mode. Say what ! 3. Any yes, finally, as many have opined before me, what were they thinking when they decided to use the antiquated DVI interface for the monitor out connector ???? Please don't force people to rummage around for an older monitor with a DVI connection to see the rig's display. That was a really wierd design decision ? How about a SDR radio as an dongle on droids. Then via cable or BT, connect to a computer, tablet or cell. Then the rig part could be hidden. You can run a mode railroad on a cell with Lionel or Marklin software. Why not ham radio? Or Flight Sim type program for ham radio that does not cost an arm or a leg!

There needs to be more antennae ports on desktop rigs. Elecraft and Kenwood rigs. On an SFR more Ant ports should not be a big deal. And an Ant port for receive.

Let me add one. Connectivity. I have a 101MP, great radio, but there's no simple way to remotely control the radio unless it's something new I haven't seen. Tim KG6G

Hi, I also don't like the ergonomics of the Yaesu, I don't like the appearance and display settings either. The menu system is also not quite suitable for me. Unfortunately, this radio has the best receiver in its category, actually even in a much more expensive category. It is still possible to buy the IC703 and thus return to better logic, display and menu, but also back to a receiver with worse characteristics and sound. I would like to buy one of those radios, but even though I know that there is no such thing as an ideal one, I have not yet decided on one. Rather, I might look for a used IC7610.

Hmm. One thing... the 991, on 10m FM. No noise. I can't get the squelch noise to go away with the FTDX10.

I know this is an old post but I don’t see why you would want both your logging program AND wsjt-x to control the rig?? In the case of MacLogger they have instructions on how to use the two together as do most logging programs. WSJT-x should control the radio with the logging program just grabbing the info to put it in your log. Why would you want WSJT-x open if you’re going to use the logging program to control the radio? If your intention is to switch between wsjt-x and other modes, then your problem is with wsjt-x not radio as it’s wsjt-x that sends the freq and mode commands to the radio when it’s running.

The DVI-D port. I got lucky and found an old moniter and a cable at a thrift store that doesn't look old. Love it!

The UI / UX isn't good. It looks lovely, but the design philosophy is one of "Form Over Function", rather than "Form Follows Function". Having said that, for me the positives outweigh the negatives, plus I have a 7300 to fall back on when frustration levels peak. The DX10 is a keeper... until Icom replace the 7300. PS I hear you on the "meters" screen - I really miss that for digi-modes.

I am not sure that Yaesu has the software down pat on this radio. Seems it can be kinda flaky at times. I'm not sure I trust it. I also wonder if this is a radio that will have the reliability that the Icom 7300 has readily displayed for about 8 years now. Time will tell. All that being said I am impressed with the receiver on the Ft Dx 10. Definitely very good.

There are royalty fees to be paid for HDMI implementation. So the money is the reason.

Nest generation radio, unfair to compare with the likes of 7300 and knowing ICOM maybe it won’t be long before they have a newer edition. I’ve owned the DX10 for over a year now and you highlight a lot of common gripes especially the Meter. Some of the connection ports are a little long in the tooth but they don’t require license fees. The radio itself is a fantastic performer and I guess I have to forgive its deficiencies. Great vid thanks 73 Mike

Fired it up last night first time ever on wolf river coil vertical, not sure I like it, alot to learn and not very user friendly. Both my elmers have 991a, which i am scared i will not like due to deep menu system. I am seeing used 991a for around $850 nice cause shack in box and i like fusion. Used 7300 out there for $850 but cant run external monitor and old technology (maybe shouldnt bother me). Really want a FT710 but would eat up all my funds. I have FTM400 and FTM200, those are decent but not great. Would love to go Icom, but alot of Fusion around me.KD9IRA

FTdx10 is a gem it has flaws but what equipment is perfect? I am eternally dissatisfied, but the comparison with the IC-7300 is a bit biased. In the end, it's your opinion and I respect it with certain reservations, no one is perfect With respect and admiration for opinion 73! Remus YO2CNH

I made a free software to control the memories tx, you only need the usb connected to the computer and it wont interfere with other programs using the radio.

A FT1000 or better, a working FT102 have been more than enough for me. But l was licensed in 1973. … Heathkit, Hammerlund, all tubes. 110F in my shack. The older days I guess. The FTDX10 seems like massive overkill, but I am behind the curve, getting back on the air after 15+ years. WA3URR

hdmi isnt a free to use standard. if you want to use hdmi in a device you have to pay to get access to it. and i know everything has it now.

I just received my FTDX10 today. I will have to learn how to use it but it worked right out of the box on my DX Commander Classic antenna. I have had the IC-7300 for four years now and have no plans to sell it. Where did you find the meter options on the FTDX10 menu? I like the meter and scope options on the IC-7300. My next step is the IC-7610. 73!

I like mine, but there are issues... Yeah the band button is really jammed in there. Fortunately, im not changing bands constantly. How about the compatibility problem with about 80% wireless mice? Even with firmware update. Who wants to spin a vfo dial all day on 10M if you could rapidly & accurately move the distance with a mouse? What about that deliberately dumbed down NON averaging spectrum display? Makes accurate point & click more difficult. A "snap to nearest" (500hz 1000hz etc) setting for mouse point & click on the spectrum display to change frequency would be great.

Well, you have your FT-DX10 and I have my Yaesu 991a and it is a nearly perfect radio. Wish they had included 1.25 meters. Only thing I don't like about Yaesu radios is the digital side of things. It all sucks big time. Voices are muddled, muffled and sound robotic--like they have been computer generated. It's because of the compression all on one half of the bandwidth and the other half is dedicated to error correction. That's what makes digital sound like crap. You are right, it isn't the perfect radio. But that still doesn't exist yet. My gripes on the FTDX-10 - Clicking on the frequency won't allow me to increment or decrement, Band stacking has been broken since firmware version 1.04, Buttons are too close to the knob, Buttons are NOT backlit. It needs the ablility to right click to open the menu. 3DSS is nothing more than eye candy. Needs a firmware update to add ALC, Compression, Volage, Current and SWR like the 7300. DVI....really?

JUST THREE DAYS INTO this yaesu and already not happy entirely. Yes, the DVI port out for the monitor. I have a nice 43 inch TV with 3 HDMI ports. One is populated with Geochron and one is Flex 6400M. One left over , I'm told, will fry the Radio if I use a DVi to HDMI cable. One of these HDMI ports is labeled HDMI 1 (eARC) one is HDMI 2 and one is HDMI 3. The Flex is in HDMI 1 (eARC) The Geochron is in HDMI2 Why can't someone tell me Positively WHY I cant plug my FTDX10 into the open, HDMI 3? I've heard about the 150 ma fuse. So what is the problem? Is it voltage back from the TV? Can't anyone , including Yaesu figure a workaround for this other than telling ME to get another Monitor with DVI input? No interface box to tame the voltage? What is the difference of my HDMI 1 (eARC) and Number 2 and 3 just labeled HDMI? W8JER
