I love what you said about being encouraging to each other. I am a welding student and am almost done with my program yet I have A LOT to learn. In fact, even when I become more proficient, there will always be something to learn and improvements to be made. I really enjoy watching your videos and have learned some really helpful things from you. I wanted to say “thank you” for this video and being an all around cool guy to watch and learn from.

I weld galvanized steel for around 9 hours a day 5 days a week (repairing Wheely bins, skips and roll on/roll off skips). Best thing I've found to deal with the fumes, is a decent air fed mask with a good face seal, making sure all filters(pre, main and gas(if available) are in good shape) and some form of extraction, whether it be overhead or on torch

Hi Mike I want to express how refreshing your attitude is toward others who are new to the welding and fabrication world. Too many videos by others I’ve begun to watch but haven’t finished because the speaker had an arrogant, ‘I know more than you do’ attitude. Your videos are so well done. Every subject you covered is part of a foundation upon which to learn the skill of welding and fabricating. I appreciate your touching on safety regarding galvanized metal and Brakleen. Many folks new to welding aren’t necessarily going to know the dangers regarding those items. Other tips you might mention are eye and hearing protection when grinding. I cringe when I see TV shows about vehicle repair and customization where the workers are not using any such protection. They are gradually losing their hearing and may one day lose the use of an eye. It’s a tragedy in progress with potentially worse to come. I watch your videos at least twice each if not more. Thank you for each one. Charlie

Hey Mike. I'm 25 years old and also work as a millwright here in Hamburg, Germany. I've started working with metal as my day job 6 years ago but was interested in metal working and tinkering in general since I was a little boy. I got my first welder from my girlfriends dad when I was 16. It was a stick brick if you will :D . I treated myself and my dad to a nice mig machine last year. But that welder with the cart and gas bottle is not really suitable for my flat in the city so it stays at my parents 90km away from where I live. Only because of your recent video about flux core wires I thought about trying this welding process I had not yet tried. I learned to weld with stick so the moment I welded with flux core I immediately felt home. I got a little inverter machine with only one dial and it is even better than I imagined. It's everything I need for repairs and builds after work here in the city. All of this jabbering only because I wanted to let you know how damn good your tips and content are. Keep up the good work. My Dad told me (back when I was I in High School 1991...) treat a Weld like Installing a Wheel on your Vehicle, as a wheel it is best to one a "Criss-Cross Pattern" for tightening, use the same principle for Finish Welding an area of more than 12"! Weld 3" at one end, go down 50% of the length and Weld another 3". Then go back up, and back down allowing the heat from the Welds to dissipate along the length. Don't start at top, go to the bottom and so forth where you finish in the middle because there will be so much heat in your material it will likely buckle or seperate... I hope this made sense as my Dad used my Hot Wheels as a Physical Representation of the Welds for me. He was an Engineer for the Military Sector at Boeing! -He knew what he was talking about. Thank you for this episode, I was hoping to assist without causing much "confusion", but I think that I made things worse... -T🖖 Western Washington State

I'll add something that may help others, I was a collision tech for over 18 years and warpage was always a concern! I found using a heat barrier gel helped. Especially on quarter panels. Large sail panel welds can be a nightmare on thin sheet metal. Always good stuff duder. I watch the basic ones like this because I hope it helps your channel. Oh, I also trashed both t-shirts I bought, so guess I'll order a couple more! Keep the vids coming ✌️

Started welding 55+ years ago, still enjoy it. (That's fabricating, not getting in a 24' diameter or larger tank or vessel and welding all day.) Those are some good useful tips. I always enjoy watching your videos. You are skilled, take pride in your work and good at figuring out how to work through problems when they come up. Keep up the good work.

All great advice brother, do you have any a little more advanced videos on fabrication and welding ? I don't do fab very much but when I do I absolutely LOVE it, if I wasn't a journeyman mechanic I'd be in metal fabrication IN A HEARTBEAT. Keep up the great work brother, 👍👍

Thanks for this useful info. I enjoy your informative style and positivity. I will go through your TIG info as I have just got an ac/dc TIG as I want to weld aluminum. I am retired so have the time to take it slowly to learn. MiG welding seemed such a pleasurable change from Arc welding and didn’t take long to get much better welds. The arc was always touch and go. I think because I was at the end of a power grid line so had inconsistent voltage with lots of drops. Keep up your great vids.

Great video and I think these are the most important tips. The only other two I can think of are: (in spite of Tip 5) always buy a bit more metal than you need for the project. Allows for miscalculations, mistakes, changes of plan, and you can always use the leftovers for something else. And the other one, most relevant for TIG, is drill vent holes so the hot gas has somewhere to escape other than back through the weld into your tungsten!

Great video, Mike...invaluable tips. I'm new to welding and my first 'project' is to build a rear bumper for my 4WD Suburban with a swing-arm tire mount. I'm almost finished with the bumper portion, and sometimes I wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew. When that happens, I step away and take a day off. So far, so good. But the mill scale is a real PITA.

@@Mikefestiva nothing like the large ones you manage. I can lift (or almost lift) mine. But interesting and fun, yes. I turned one of my frill presses into a three phase VFD, and I’m going to do that to my mill shortly. I also built a tilting mobile “rack” for my various metal bars, rods and what have you. Also I took my Miller spot welder and did what Miller should have done to it and the stand. I’ve been modifying my 14” lathe. You know, the usual things we do to our equipment.Some other smaller things.

I am brand new to welding and stink at it, but I am learning and enjoying trying something new, despite my hideous welds. Your videos have helped me diagnose my mistakes and try again. Great tips for us beginners Mike. I would also appreciate a video on your tips on saws and especially metal cutting blades. I look at 12 and 14 inch metal blades for my saws and fear spending $75 to $100+ for something that won’t do the job or won’t last long for the money. Thanx again.

Awesome video and new subscriber here. I’m setting up my own shop and interested in what tools you’d recommend a man pick up to be able to fabricate the types of things that you fabricating. We’re out on our farm and have heavy equipment, and a proclivity to build stuff ourselves. I have 3-D skills from my experience in architecture design and Have CNC’d parts before. Seriously considering one of the crossfire tables. Could you just go through a shop tour and run through all of the gear and tools that you have as well as how you laid out the floor plan to be a functional working shop? 🍻

hi mike The topic you brought up was very good and useful, thank you for that. I have several to ask you, but I will not burden you, I will ask you in every video of yours. Regarding a Tig welding machine, as we have a Tig welding machine in my city, the agent is there, but we do not have the same equipment as yours. We have tig and mig welding machine from edon company. But I would have liked to get a welding machine from Prime or Yeswelder or Protools. But the agent for these devices and maintenance is not available in my country. What do you advise me after you try many machines, and which one do you think is the best and has a longer life span. Thank you

Question with the Vulcan OmniPro 220 you used to have. Did you use 6/2 or 6/3 wire for the breaker / outlet? I can find what to use, and haven’t heard back from Vulcan!

What type of moisture filter system do you use for compressed air and what fluid do you use for CNC plasma?

I’m just running two inline water traps to cut down on water getting to my Plasma cutter. I haven’t found any affordable additives for CNC water tables. I have been using a product I got from my work but I don’t like it because it foams up when cutting.
