Haverstock Hill was secondary school for children 11-18. Marjorie Field Rhoades was a 1940s fashion designer for the firm Field Rhoades. She was London based. The illustrations appear to be watercolor. Coincidence? Maybe. But... Who knows?

The “don’t put paint brushes in your mouth” part is because back then, they had this thing where they would lick the brushes to clean them and supply water. Many of the people who did this technique fell terribly ill and died.

For watercolor paint or other types of paint? Isn’t watercolor usually non toxic? Or is that just modern watercolor? 😲

@@alyxskyler I don't know exactly when it changed, but in old times, it was hard to get some colours, so they used some toxic things to obtain all colours that there is in this kind of set, things like heavy metals. Judging that dos and don'ts, it was probably the era of transition, they started to find another ways to obtain some colours, but others they don't, but probably there is some "fake brands" trying to sell cheaper inks with the toxic feature in it, and that is way they are so... emphatic in the "DON'T USE FAKE BRANDS, JUST REEVES ORIGINAL PRODUCTS". Probably they used some kinda of marketing promising that there is less toxic material in their products, but they can't guarantee that if someone bought a fake product.

This "TRY AGAIN" is actually a quite nice tip for a stundent, don't get discouraged by failure! By the way, with those old materials, do you guys keep using it or you guys just experiment with it and after that store them? As they are so old and probably will never get another set of these ever... ^^

Agreed! The certificate suggests the palette was a prize given for industriousness rather than a general issue item. Most old schools that do prizes like that have book prizes. Pretty cool that they awarded watercolours as a prize at Marjorie’s school!

also: Cadmium colors were a lot more radioactive back then, so be sure to be safe when using cadmium colors from this set!

I am pretty sure cadmium is just a (not so heavy) metal. With atomic number of 48. Silver is 47. It is too light to like actually be radioactive. Most paints do not contain it. Yes you shouldn't like eat it. But A tiny bit of it should just be filtered out by the liver. It isn't like it's one of the glowing radium/plutonium paints that were actually used. And it was used in everything. Even make up. Kids toys. All those things. Old paints do regularly contain lead. Which is a heavy metal that is also like reactive and all. And actually dangerous. Which was used in paint and make up for like a couple hundred of years. But cadmium isn't the evil thing thing in paint. And definetly isn't radioactive.

This reminds me of when I unearthed some art supplies that my dad had gotten in school in his home country in like the 50's. They were partially used and I was so excited. I never knew he was an artist and I wondered what kind of things he used to draw, and I was so hyped to have that connection with him and when he was like, "Ugh, I hated that class, I used them like once and I can't draw to save my life." Very anticlimactic ending to the whole experience, haha. Still cool to see such old tools though. Great video, as usual. 😁

I got a lil curious and began googling about to see if I could dig up any info on "M Boarchief" (I think the B might be an R actually), Haverstock school and our dear Marjorie Field. On searching for Marjorie I found a lot of fashion art from the 40s designed by a Marjorie Field. One of the 1st designs I picked to see was just a sketch of a coat but the notes next to to mentioned the intended colour...**mustard yellow** ! I also saw another coat that was a vibrant yellow. COULD THIS BE OUR MYSTERY MARJORIE? Could these VERY PAINTS have been the ones she used as she left school to paint her early designs in her attempts to break into the fashion industry? The fact that Steph was drawn to doing a 30s fashion designer style piece is SO INTERESTING now! Was she lead by the industrious spirit of the fashionable Marjorie Field? Food for thought! 💖

I used to have emerald green hair, and it faded to a very pretty mint over time. Now it's just blond, but I'm planning on re-dyeing my hair soon! Beautiful drawings as always; you guys are always so much fun to watch!
