It’d be interesting to see a found footage film where the excuse for filming, even after everyone dies, is “if we make it out, everyone is going to assume that one of us killed them. If we find out what caused all this we’ll be proven innocent” Not only would it help explain things but it could also lead to other members in the group suspecting the cameraman to be the cause behind things since nobody was ever accusing him of doing anything

More found footage military movies would be welcome, and help alot with immersion. I remember my dad showing me gopro videos he got from military friends in Iraq and Afghanistan and I've never seen more harrowing war footage, it really helps you understand their position and gives atleast a taste of what it'd be like on the frontlines.

This has got me thinking, have there been any Vietnam War movies that have supernatural horror in them? Like we follow a group of soldiers on patrol and they run across some spooky stuff happening to both them and the NVA.

I made a short film in high school years ago for a film class with my friends. A long range patrol unit in the central highlands encounter a bacterial infection called “jungle rot”. Incidentally that was our film’s title. We decided on a found footage format along the lines of 84 MoPic, wherein the camera man kept filming for his superiors to document the events of the film. It was a while ago, but I remember it being a horror about the team being surrounded and chased in the jungle by infected NVA and lost LRRP squads. Out of all projects ours was apparently the best. The whole squad dies, and our cameraman was extracted from the jungle by helo rope. The jungle gets sprayed with Agent Orange, and it would turn out the whole Agent Orange spraying campaign was in effort to destroy the bacterial infection.

to add to your list of interesting found footage films, there is a found footage anime, and its a mecha directed by Ryuske Takahashi (VOTOMS, Blue Gender) called FLAG. The protag is a journalist who is sent to an unnamed Asian country during a civil war to document the UN Peacekeeper's first deployment of bipedal fighting vehicles. Meanwhile, her senpai is investigating the heads of power in the war and documenting everything from the civilian point of view. Anyone who likes military anime should watch this. Its a really interesting and smart show.

Something else that made Blair Witch so popular for its time was the real life buzz around it, and not just audiences excited at the idea of a horror movie shot in a different perspective; the filmmakers went out of their way to make it look like this was a documentary. They created real life buzz that the 3 actors in it were real people that disappeared in the forests of Brunswick where it took place. They put up missing poster signs of the 3, they had the actors hide from the public eye to make it really seem like something happened to them. This was WILD in the time of 1999 with minimal internet capabilities compared to today.
@TwoBs
@TwoBs 8 ай бұрын
I had forgotten all about that. Kids in junior high talking about it as if it happened in real life. One of those “I heard from so and so…” games of telephone where the story for it got more and more wild. Despite hardly anyone in my school even having access to the internet, we all knew about the missing people story and everything. I even remember parents being concerned about whether their teens should watch it (had its own little satanic panic stuff going on around its release in theaters). I vividly recall going to the local movie theater in the mall on opening night to try and get a ticket. The line just to see this movie spanned for a good ways past several stores. Had to see the 9pm showing because it sold out before I could even get to the ticket window. That found footage movie was perfectly made for _that_ type of theater experience where it’s crowded, everyone is extremely into it, and had people looking over their shoulders in paranoia. The hype built up around it, people believing it to be true … they set everything up for it so well. Of course, after it left the theaters, all the stuff about the missing people just … stopped. Right around when the VHS release came out was when people regained some sense and realized “oh, right … it’s just a movie.”

Glad you enjoyed the film. It's definitely not a powerhouse when it comes to acting as mentioned, but with the right expectations it's a great movie to watch on a lazy afternoon. 14:27 From reading into LRRP units, MACV SOG and other Vietnam era SOF, I'd say the movie sits more in the authentic column rather than accurate. As you mentioned the equipment is all correct for the time period, Tiger Stripe uniforms(Which have mixed unit patches, a trick used by teams to imply that there was multiple Units within the area in the event that members were killed or captured) were adopted and worn on mission by some units, and a lot of the TTP in the film such as the RON(Rest Over Night) position and the improvised boobytrap designs were definitely accurate. And recon teams of 6-8 men were regularly sent out on multiday missions just to poke around and find something for either artillery/CAS to shoot at, or find and fix enemy troop concentrations until a larger force could come in and mop it up. Moments like the scene where they are forced to carry on with the patrol, while hearing another Unit in the vicinity getting wiped out over the radio actually happened to teams. The scenario is fairly believable(aside from small gripes like the near fratricide) with only a few nitpicks when it comes to choices made on the part of LT, and for the movie to work you gotta suspend your disbelief that a small reconnaissance team would allow a noisy ass camera to follow them around in an area known to have NVA/VC cells active. It really only starts to stray from authenticity/accuracy when it comes to portraying the level of stealth required, if you play music on your radio in the middle of the night you're just asking for trouble. I will say it does do a decent job showcasing how quickly things could go south once a team gets compromised. If anyone's interested in learning more about the actual units and missions that inspired the movie I'd look into the following books for more context. "Inside the LRRPs: Rangers in Vietnam" by Michael Lee Lanning. "Recondo: LRRPs in the 101st Airborne" by Larry Chambers. "SOG: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam" by John Plaster. "We Few: U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam" and "Whispers in the Tall Grass: Back Behind Enemy Lines with Macv-Sog" by Nick Brokhausen. Any of John "Stryker" Meyer's books. Thanks again for taking a look at this and maybe sort of acting as my personal billboard for this movie, it's one I'd rather not see get completely lost. I hope the strange file named cryptominer.exe in that zip hasn't given you too much trouble!

@@bakixavirists4561For SEAL centric literature I've heard that "Point Man: Inside the Toughest and Most Deadly Unit in Vietnam" by James Watson and "The Element of Surprise: Navy Seals in Vietnam" by Darryl Young are fairly good, but I haven't had a chance to read them myself. John Plaster's book mentions them a few times, as there were several SEAL teams under MACV SOG often referred to as SOG SEALs.

I’m a bit late but I’m hoping to help with the problem of why the movie feels so slow, These men are a LRRP team (long range reconnaissance patrol) with their main job being to basically sit behind enemy lines for 4-5 days and observe enemy movements to report back to command. That way the infantry units know where the enemy is, how many there are, what gear they have, Etc. So if the movie wanted to be fully accurate it would just be like 5 guys in the woods not talking and using hand signals the whole time while taking notes and photos lol, while they did communicate occasionally they mostly kept silent during operations to remain undetected. In terms of military accuracy it’s not bad but it’s not great. Some of their equipment is a bit inaccurate but can easily be overlooked. As for their tactics some are quite laughable, while others are actually true to how LRRP teams would operate in the field. Still a fantastic movie as LRRP teams are mainly overlooked in the Vietnam war despite playing a key part in it.

I genuinely feel that a found footage movie set in WW2 could be great. They had video cameras. Not great by any means. But with some liberties taken. I feel they can make a stylized movie with the look of cameras from that era. I see two great settings. US soldiers as they besiege a Japanese island for several months. I can see it opening it up footage of Midway, joyous people. But when you get to something like Okinawa it becomes a lot more grim. But personally my favorite idea. Is a German soldier recording everything. I can see it. Wanting to capture the fighting, or a soldier being tasked with recording the war. Some young recruit. Maybe even underage. Being excited to help the fatherland. I can see it all start out at Operation Barbarossa. Then the majority of the movie takes place in the devasted and horrifying city of Stalingrad. End with Russians storming the building and killing the recorder. Imagine things like seeing and hearing Katyusha rocket launchers. The sheer destruction. The seemingly endless amount of Russians. The horrifying images of seeing bodies of residents. Seeing children's classrooms or whatever semblance of children living there being destroyed. I can see this being some form of "Come and See" but taken from the perspective of a soldier facing the true horrors of war.

Nam was a different beast, it’s prob the only US war that the reason for being there was debatable, while also instituting a draft. WW2 had a draft but that was a necessary war with clear good and bad guy. You could say the same about Korea to a lesser extent. But Nam had people flat out protesting and refusing to go. Iraq and the rest of the GWOT like Vietnam. is debatable as to whether or not what we were doing was right, however unlike Vietnam every US service member who fought in GWOT volunteered to do so. Because of the unique circumstances of the Vietnam war and the US soldiers who fought in it, the culture and behavior you see fostered by those soldiers is unlike anything before or after. You had dudes smoking weed and fragging their own commanders. I could 100% believe that a SGT on a LRRP with a cherry LT in the middle of Vietnam would point his weapon at the LT to scare him into shutting tf up while he figures out what’s going on. As for the dialogue, particularly towards the beginning of the movie, when they we meet the fellas. That’s accurate af.
