In Madrid, the people in the 19th century used to go to a big park called "La casa de campo" where they spent all the day with the family having a picnic. The richest people went there by tram. The line from the centre to the park was the eighth line, so the poorest people started using the reference of the eight in this expression that is used even nowadays.

I also grew up speaking both languages and I thought I was the only one who noticed and got so confused about Spanish and its infinite amount of sayings that even though I am fluent my brain feels like is frying as I try to understand spanish sayings, its worse than riddles, if you do not speak Spanish you have no idea how conplicaticated Spanish sayings are, its like learning spanish in spanish, its worse than algebra...I get so amazed as a kid and still to this day in my late 20s when my mom and other relatives in 1 , 2 seconds explain to me a saying or hear them quote them ! The english language also has some folksy non-sense sayings of it's own: 1-"Until the cows come home" means "To wait a really long time" 2-"To keep them at bay" means "To keep them away" 3-"Better the devil that you know" means "Trust those you already know" 4-"To bury the hatchet" means "To make peace with someone" 5-"Out of the blue" means "All of a sudden" 6-"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" means "Don't try to do it all at once" or "Don't take all your chances on one bet"
