The Lhon Drokpas consist of 12 families of Tibetan yak herders settled in the upper reaches of the Lachen Valley where they have grazed their herds of yak and sheep along and across the Sikkim-Tibet border for generations.
Settled between the altitudes of 4,000 and 5,300 metres, they endure some of the harshest climatic and living conditions known to mankind. The film explores their present and past way of life on the Cold Desert of North Sikkim, and discusses their dilemmas and how they view their children’s future.
Cinematography: Phurba T. Bhutia and Dawa T. Lepcha
Editing: Phurba T. Bhutia, Dawa T. Lepcha and Dr Anna Balikci Denjongpa
Anthropologist and Project Coordinator: Dr Anna Balikci Denjongpa
Produced by: Director, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.

Splendid. No words can define how I enjoyed the video. Respect the Drokpa. Their life are full of hardships, but despite that they laugh more than we do, because they are closer to nature, and hence closer to God. Thank you for this enlightening video.

Beautifully narrated. Covered all aspects of future of this profession. I personally have been to many places shown in the documentary and know many of the people shown. Apart from the scenic view the question to ask is also the sustainability of this tribe. Life is extreme and with no help coming from any authorities the future seems deem as clearly no younger generation will be filling up these great legends. Sadly there is not even good survey held for number of yaks and sheeps. Awareness is the call for the moment but solution is not easy..

Having visited a Drokpa village in Sikkim in 2001 for documentation (listing of heritage sites) for INTACH, I am thrilled to see this video. Great documentation, and a wonderful film. I visited the village up beyond Thangu prior to the snows closing the pass, and the trek to the village was quite arduous. Well done to all of you. Better than a National Geographic , BBC or PBS doc! The questions asked by the “anthropologist” were perfect. Documenting a clearly dying way of life at the cusp of their disappearance is very important. Climate change, Chinese aggression, the lure of the ‘easier’ life in the cities are dooming this ancient lifestyle. Once gone, how will these people know who they are? Hope, I guess, is in the future of the city educated children... unless they just drink and ramble around!

I'm not expert...but I feel Tibetan cold dersert is drier and experience less snow than Himalayas... So there does exist a chance of finding more vegetation as compared to Himalayas.. specially gurudongmar tsolhamo region And during summer months Tibetan plateaus experience extreme climate with warm -hot days and cold-chilly nights...compared to that Himalaya experiences a much favourable climate...

I like the deal he makes with the sheep, in his song. U don't need old wool, so take it. When I release u, run like a shooting star. As an African, it caught my attention. You hear that kind of thing from the old people. Nature(man , n beast) striking a right balance with itself. Its not man torturing an animal . We (man n animal) look out for each other. There's harmony.

It is explained in the begining. They used to take the animals down in winter in Tibet, and up to Sikkim in summer. After the border closed in 1962, they were forced to stay in Sikkim and adapt their migration pattern. Since they could not go further down in winter in Sikkim because of agriculture and private land, they reversed the migration. They go up in winter, and the yak survive because the wind exposes grass on hill tops. They have to be fed a special mixture (explained in the film) when the snow is too heavy to be blown away
