Love my 7.3's, had the 05 6.0 after selling my 01 SD. Well 61k and it was dead from oil cooler failure and sold it for 12k "as is" found a 2000 with 78k on her, no rust anywhere. Im At 182k now, she's healthy and beautiful and the last offer I got for her was $37,000 of course NO SALE this is the last truck I will own and will take it to my grave. Just bought a clapped out rusted hippie short bus from Quebec with a 7.3 w 280'000 kms / ~175K Miles. The bus is basically a storage shed for the motor and trans, someday to swap into '90 crew cab long box manual F350. Should be a good time. The 460 is doing fine enough for now. Thanks for this awesome vid. Pumps my boots.

I do agree 7.3l are the best powerstroke motors made but in the beginning of your video you said they are the best diesel engine, Id probably would have to give that to the 12 valve. 7.3l are a great motor if they only had more gears back in the day they probably still be in production.

Greate informative video. I have a 1996 powerstroke engine. On my truck I have a hydro boost break master cylinder. I am thinking of deleting the vaccum pump. If I am not completely wrong the vaccum pump "drives" the break master cylinder. Should I completely take off the vaccum pump or let it be as it sits and just "code off" that function on the ECU? A another question I have is regarding the fuel bowl and the fuel heater. I have plans to do a completely fuel bowl delete and to do a complete e fuel system swap. How should I connect the fuel heater to the e fuel system? I have not yet decided what e fuel system I will go for. I am thinking of two filter system with a lift pump. Any suggestion?

I replaced the o rings and didnt take off the back side that goes to the waterpump and just replaced the o rings and so when i started the engine the antifreeze overflow tank immediatly filled with oil and it was a nightmare ...... I do believe i lubricated the waterpump pretty good with that stunt! Lmao!

Fix the various fluid leaks it’ll develop, give it as few heat cycles as possible, let it warm up in the morning before you start working it, give it 5 or 10 minutes to cool down at idle in the evening before you shut her down, give it shell 15-40 T4, T5, T6, shauffers, or amsoil (one other brand that makes top of the line oil as well, can’t think of the name, and it’s very hard to come by) for oil and it’ll last forever.

I bought a 96 f350 dually for hauling my 17,000 pound RV. Can a stock block actually handle 50 psi from the turbo all day without problems? Looking to build a reliable strong towing 7.3, so far I had the transmission built & added cooler, S&B filters cai, Bank 3" down pipe to a 5" exhaust with a cat & muffler delete, and just installed a Hydra chip. Any guidance for pillar guages & failure levels like anything over 220 degrees for the trans etc. I plan on doing a sweeping overhaul of the fuel system, Hpop, Lpop & harmonic balancer, head studs, injectors, up pipes to a T4 turbo from irate diesel, & an intercooler. Looking for any feedback, words of wisdom, cautionary tales or anything I missed!

Anyone running the 7.3 powerstroke.. ya know how if no matter what you let it did for a day or 2 it takes a long start to fire? Warm cold don’t matter. New glow plugs and injectors.. still a long start after sitting .. it’s the low pressure oil pump behind the balancer . The tolerance has worn too big and allows the oil to drain back so you gotta crank till oil gets back to the hpop to work the injectors.. if you change that pump it will start so easy even in low temperatures.

Bought my 2001 w 6speed new . a few mods, a dozen clutch hydraulics, LOL... I would say the 7.3 has a wider power curve that the Cummins I've driven. might be slightly less TQ, but rpm range feels more street friendly... with 80hp program, it's good on power. At 120 hp, it's just going to break parts easier... So far 1 rear axle, 1 rear yoke and broke various front dana 50 parts 9 or 10 times ... to have a 444 with a p-pump would be brutally reliable..

The 7.3’s definitely the most reliable powerstroke…it may even be the most reliable diesel ever put in a light duty application (and I’m a 12 valve Cummins guy, notice how I said ‘may’, it’s truly the one Diesel engine I wouldn’t want to go up against in terms of pure bombproof reliability)…but it’s certainly not the most reliable diesel…you’ve got stuff like the international DT466P and CAT 3126 (and dozens more) in the medium duty world that blow it out of the water, and stuff in the heavy duty world like Cummins block 3 855 big cams, and 3406A, B, and C’s (again, dozens of other examples) that make the 7.3 look like a rotary in terms of reliably.

@CUSTOMWORKS7.3PSD

Forged rods are higher grade and are further machined and balanced The Powder version eliminates the machining and balancing and are recommended not to surpass 500 hp unless you upgrade the piston. the shop is me. i’m the shop. i’m just putting a bandaid over a gunshot wound fixing leaks and small issues every time they pop up instead of rebuilding the motor. it’s pretty easy to say this is the best engine ever if you’re intimately familiar with it-i’m nowhere near your level, but pretty close. there are not many engineering flaws with this engine, i must admit-from a mech. e point of view. most of these trucks problems come from a systems integration and compliance standpoint imo. OBS was not designed for a diesel, a commercial engine wasn’t designed for passenger car emissions, HEUI was not designed for the shear stresses in the rotating assembly with the looser, less-enforced maintenance intervals of passenger vehicles compared to medium duty fleet, etc.

@@CUSTOMWORKS7.3PSD I've been running and maintaining marine diesels since 1960 and rebuilding them since 1969. I may be spoiled. When you work on the ocean, you need engines that don't just stop.
