Kayfabe existed to protect the business. Not from fans, but for fans. These men asked us to pay money to watch them fake fight in their underpants. We have always known this to be true back over a hundred years. It was a commitment to their art and their respect for our suspension of disbelief that they would maintain that illusion - for our benefit - in and out of the ring. I miss that time.

Dude not everybody knew it was fake, up until the attitude era most people still thought it was real. That’s what killed wrestling, they don’t try to pretend that it’s real anymore
@scottanderson8167

@@ladistar wrestling isn’t dead at all. WWE is terrible and AEW is merely good, but there are 100 indie promotions around the country that are very entertaining. And that’s just in America :) Wrestling will always remain because it’s the art form that best presents pure melodrama.

El Santo is such a known legend that ever I in the 21st century know and respect his legacy. Did you know that upon his death, when his funeral was happening, it became somewhat of a Mexican holiday so all his fans could go see the funeral........ nearly a 1 million or so turned up?
@Gogeta007yBro
@Gogeta007yBro 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, actually more than 1 million of people went to his funeral, and is even somewhat of a superhero here in Mexico, even having it's own mini animated series in Cartoon Network like one decade ago about him, saving the world. He had a comic book, was mentioned in a lot of songs like the cumbia "Los Luchadores", and even made lucha libre one of the biggest sports for a few decades from the 60s to the 90s, taking a big spot that made it as important as soccer in that time (Latin America most important sport). El Santo was a phenom even before The Phenom was a thing in the 90s, and with his great "luchador" capabilites made lucha libre trully important to the world, changing how Japan and even USA wrestle in a ring.

Actually, not just El Santo, but almost every "luchador" from that time have keep kayfabe alive as they can. Obviously, almost all "luchadores" of that time died a long time ago, or were unmasked in a match, but the ones who remain alive and masked, are still maintaining kayfabe as alive as possible.

He once said about his MSG match with Buddy Rogers, where "supposedly" the script was changed at the last moment, he whispered to Rogers "we can do this the easy way or we can do it the hard way"! Bruno then proceeded to "win" the title in under a minute. Bruno lost his title to Billy Graham with Superstar's feet on the ropes. I think that maintaining kayfabe at even that point was a joke. They were talking about mainstream popularity. During the mid to late 1980's, NO ONE was more popular than Hulk Hogan. He was everywhere. Movies. TV. Magazine covers (and I don't just mean wrestling magazines, he was the first pro wrestler to ever be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated). Hulk Hogan covered all forms of media in North America the way El Santo did in Latin America. Possibly even more so, as Hogan was also popular in Europe and Australia, where few people outside Mexico even knew El Santo's name.

I remember as a kid going to Mtamoros Mexico in the summers to stay with my granny and I saw a El Santo movie it was( El Santo y Blue Demon contra las momias ) something like that which meant( El Santo and Blue Demon vs the mummies ) Blue Demon was almost equally as famous as El Santo in Mexico

Arn Anderson was always one of my favorites. Watched a 30 min. time limit draw between Arn and Regal recently. Talk about a couple of stiff, old school, psychology using ring generals.

The wrestlers that were in this video are true legends. They truly loved pro wrestling. They knew what it was and the importance of protecting the business. Can kayfabe come back? Yes but it will take a lot of work and commitment from promoters and wrestlers.

I remember an incident from the early 70's involving Joe Dusek who had an AWA promotion in Omaha, Ne. He came down to the little town of Imogene, IA where he was wounded in a hunting accident. Our local paper, The Evening Sentinel had a photo of a snarling Joe Dusek flexing his bandaged bicep as he was treated in Shenandoah, IA at the Hand Community Hospital.

My favorite one of these keeping kayafabe. In high school I read the biography of hulk hogan. Apparently when having to drive to all these events. Hulk was convinced to carry a gun. Well the car he was driving got pulled over and in the back seat was the wild samoans. And they were committed to staying in character. All while Hulk begged for help in explaining who they were, why they were in a rental car or it might have belonged to a promoter and why he had a gun. And either vince or someone corporate had to come get them.

Freddie Blassie was fearless in front of crazed fans. I watched an interview where I believe it was one of the people who he managed talked about how someone tried to take a swing at him over the railings but didnt fully connect the punch. Freddie turned around and said "You call that a punch, you punch like a little girl" and then laughs as more boos rained the ring.

They left out George The Animal Steele. George taught high school in (somewhere, not sure), but not of his students nor his own children knew he was a wrestler at all. He spent every summer and many weekends throughout the school year driving a few hundred miles to get out of his home territory, back in those days (in The Time of Great Unknowing, aka before the internet), no one would see him if he was on tv, see him on posters, what-have-you. He did this until he was making enough money at it to go full-time in the business.

Social media, in my opnion, is one of the worst things to happen to wrestling. I'm glad it wasn't a major thing when I watched WWE religiously because it ruins the kayfabe vibe. I enjoyed not hearing much about the superstars after the show because it would get me excited for the following week.
