i just did this fix . thanks man . took me like an hour . i practiced on about 2-3 at the junk yard and still managed to mess up one of the screws holding the box around the steering column up . oh well . cylinder misfire is my next tackle .

I ended up watching this while looking at videos on how to replace the shift cable from the column to the transmission. While I didn't have the same issue as you, I still learned from this and it was very clear and informative. Very good info to have. I had to comment because at the end you actually made me laugh with the wife beater comment. Keep these informative videos coming. And I will definitely be removing my drivers seat when I replace my shift cable. Thanks!

Thank you for making this video. My 97 tahoe 4x4 was having the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS! It just quit on me in the Menards parking lot so I had to manually shift all the way home. No tach, no Speedo, CEL, no PND indicator. It's kind of a bitch to get to but saved me a shit ton of money or bother my mechanic buddy. I am still in awe that the damn ignition switch would cause this many problems. Thanks again. Seems more common then not.

Easy test if it is your ignition switch is not working . If you’re tac. does not work, speedometer is not working properly, shift indicator light is not working, and your transmission is not shifting or stuck in 3rd. Here’s what you do to test your ignition switch. With the engine running, hit the back of the Key and drive into the ignition switch. It might take a few sharp hits but see if your tech starts working. If it works I believe everything else will too. This procedure confirms your ignition switch is bad. It comes as an assembly wiring harness. I just ordered a wiring harness through (1A Auto )for $37 and will be putting it in shortly I believe this will cure of my problem.

my wife's 97 sonoma is stuck in higher gear. can shift down manually but wont shift up on its own. code said solenoid so replaced both high and low not knowing which was which. no change. this gives me hope. thanks for posting!

worked very well. Thanks video didnt show how to remove upper steering wheel cover. That was tricky. I just trimmed the bottom of the keylock hole out and slipped it over. Works for me.

Thanks for everyone's input. My 95 pickup was stuck in limp mode and the speedometer was acting weird. Switched out the solinoids. That didn't fix it. Then I found these videos. Had to order my ignition switch online. Once I got that switch, we were good. Thanks a lot man!!

I have a 98' Chevy 1500 5.7 so I let it warm up like always never paid attention as I took off down the road turned on next road realized my rpm an speedometer wernt working at all an transmission wasnt shifting only had 3rd gear so I know what that usually means as I just changed the transmission in my other K1500 ..I was thinking the worst. Fluids we're good ✔ made it back home watched your video an hoped it was the switch. Tore steering column down didnt have the right tork for the 2 screws that hold the switch in place so I tapped on switch as it was running an rpm started working an with out putting it back together I put it in gear an it was good to go. This is a hellish job for a normal size guy. If you're keeping the truck, you may as well do the multifunction switch and the ignition switch at the same time. They all require the same hellish torturous procedures. Take it from me. I did them all separately. My left shoulder was not the same for a good six months!

Mines did the same I had put a rebuilt transmission in it saw it smoking from steering wheel it dont want to shit out of first well it did 1 time and was stuck in that gear do you think it is the ignition switch? I change the speed sensor and it does the same

My 96 gmc 1500 wouldn't go into gear. For a week it was very difficult to move the shifter prior to it giving out. I was told thru auto zone it was the brake safety switch. Which I changed out. But prior to that someone changed my entire steering column from tilt to non tilt. Now my truck won't go into park. Is it the shift interlock solenoid? I'm so frustrated been without my truck 3 weeks

where did you find a small t 5 with the hex shank? most long sockets barely seem long enough

i have a 93 c2500 5.7 350 and it is stuck in 2nd gear the trans was redone completely and still nothing im getting 5v to the tps but might be thinking my communicating wire from tps to ecu might have a break the ecu was replaced with 2 other ones and still no luck did the same thing anyone think a ground might be an issue

I own a 99 Chevrolet Suburban 2 wheel Drive 1500 series and I'm having a shifting problem. I noticed when I go to take off my RPM gets between 3,000-4,000 RPM before it shifts. After the first shift it's doesn't shift anymore. Just wondering if anyone has a clue of what could be the issue.

My 1997 2500 would crank but not start. It only has 80,000 miles on it but it was used on a horse farm and they started and stopped it a lot. The ignition switch seems to cause a bunch of problems on these trucks

The two ignition switch torx were T-4 NOT T-5. And I had to go buy some deep inverted torx sockets that actually were still almost two short but I made due. get the longest cut back sockets you can find as auto-zone had none and Advance had two different sets . The more expensive set were skinnier. Also get some muscle relaxers as you will twist everything you got to do this. LOL

Ok everyone here we go. I own a 1997 GMC 2500 4x4 Sl with tilt steering. I was having problems with my speedo bouncing all over the place followed by the transmission acting like it was in neutral any time this would happen. Id have an intermittent check gauges light come on but no check engine light. Day 2 of this my truck stuck itself in "Limp-in-Mode" or default. This is when it sticks itself in 2nd or 3rd gear and wont shift. It so you can drive it home or to the shop. After watching tons of stuff and reading countless forums I got started. I replaced my FRONT transmission speed sensor. I say front because this transmission has 2 of them. I had no luck so I replaced the back speed sensor, nothing. Had it plugged in at Orileys even though I had no light on and it came back that it was 2 out of my 4 O2 sensors that needed to be replaced. This COULD not be the reason the truck went into "Limp Mode" I replaced both of these sensors anyway, Nothing! By now I'm super frustrated. I came across this video from stifroc (thank god) and bought an Ignition Switch today. Tore the truck apart, changed it out and it runs like a champ! I was going to do a video of my own but have no patience and no meds! Goes to show that you don't need codes or a check engine light on to have this problem. I cant express how much I appreciate you posting this video! it made it possible fro me to have a vehicle again after far to long!!
