46233 Battles Shap on The Midday Scot 19/3/16

LMS Princess Coronation Class 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' was at the helm of 'The Midday Scot' on Saturday 19th March 2016. The tour run by The Railway Touring Company can be seen firstly passing Bay Horse before its water stop at Carnforth then we see the Duchess digging in on the climb up Shap Wells on its way to Carlisle and Edinburgh on the outward leg of the charter.

Superb Phil , tough slog up the bank with the bad coal but it made for a great sight and sound . Good to see the rubber band worked well. Good to chat with you both at Shap wells . Steve

Great to see the effort of the crew to get her over Shap - I was in the penultimate coach on the trip and you could tell from the dust coming from the cab on the run down the Lune Gorge (and the lack of steam heating) that the poor quality coal was really hampering her performance. She performed excellently in the afternoon though once the coal had been swapped at Carlisle

Surprising the crawl over Shap as I thought she would have been nicely warmed up having started at Manchester. Two excellent clips though Phil and nice to see some mainline steam again

Sad to see the Duchess struggling so much due to a bad batch of coal apparently, we have seen in the past how she has flown over Shap with 13 on, still a great sequence tho. Thanks to all you who got up early on a Saturday morning to film and post your footage on line, regards, Stuart.

Phil, a fine capture of the Duchess digging in hard ! Shame about the reported coal issue. I was looking forward to seeing what DBC could do with her. Nice calm conditions for you which must of been nice, as we got to clearly hear that thudding Stanier beat. Regards, Liam

Looks like she was a bit low on steam pressure,(no wisp from safety valva) but made it up with a great soundtrack even if slower than normal.
