In the heartland of Madhya Pradesh, nestled along the banks of the mighty Narmada River, lies the tale of a 30-year struggle endured by the Adivasi communities affected by the construction of Bargi Dam. More than three decades ago, this massive hydroelectric project brought electricity and progress to the region but also resulted in the displacement of 12,000 families.
This ground report chronicles the pain, trouble, and small gains that have defined the fight for proper rehabilitation by these Adivasi communities. While the government provided compensation for the acquired land, a comprehensive rehabilitation policy was conspicuously absent. As a result, families found themselves uprooted from their ancestral lands and thrust into uncertainty, grappling with the loss of their homes, livelihoods, and cultural identity.
Through interviews with the affected families, community leaders, and activists who have tirelessly campaigned for justice, the report delves into the daily challenges faced by these displaced Adivasis. It highlights their resilience in the face of adversity, their unwavering determination to reclaim what was rightfully theirs, and the collective spirit that has fueled their struggle for the past three decades.
