Good video, showing the traditional manual proces of candlemaking. What I like the most is that everything seems to be done calmly, without any stress which is so common in today's industry. Nevertheless I wonder if there's any other advantage in adding the wax in so many layers, as opposed to, say, moulding the candle and maybe finishing it as shown here, other than following the traditional craftmanship? In any case, the presentation is great, and it's always good to see that there are still people who stick to the old ways, and I hope it's also financially sustainable, so the craft is preserved...

I cant help but feel like many traditional Japanese artisan goods were just excessively luxurious and needlessly expensive items made to distinguish the rich from the poor. One of these candles is probably worth 20+ regular dip candles and it will burn 90% the same. Regular people are not buying these things

And again, the victory of tradition over common sense, the cargo cult of antiquity without understanding the reason for such a sequence of actions. Thicker hollow base - to prevent wax from spilling out. It was impossible to make an even and thick enough wick due to the low level of technology, so it was made by wrapping a stick in paper. Drying the base in a standing position - since it takes too long to attach each stick for hanging, and the worker had to work from dawn to dusk in order to somehow provide for himself, that’s why arranging “standing bundles” on the shelves. To save wood or coal for heating the wax, they heated it only at the very beginning, because the wax thickened at the end of the procedure, and it had to be spread by hand instead of the normal dipping process. And so that the resulting product was not disgustingly crooked (otherwise it would not be sold for normal money), it was leveled with a knife or a plane. Also, drying in bundles makes the candles crooked due to uneven cooling and sticking of several pieces into a heap, which is also corrected with a plane. Now, being able to keep the wax warm, monitor the temperature, use modern higher quality wicks, finally hang the product properly... They repeat the old process, carefully reproducing all its shortcomings. This is either stupidity and the cargo cult of the old, or “it was better before” marketing. This is the approach of either hucksters in pursuit of profit, or fools. Proper maintenance of traditions is when you understand why this or that action was performed, and look for ways to simplify the work using new technologies. Your traditional candle will retain its qualities, but will become affordable to people, and will not cost as much as an airplane wing.

@@deadcxap755 Agreed. I've spoken to several Professors from different Universities in different countries. Because I was really interested to see if it was at all possible. And once they stopped laughing all of them agree the test has either never been done, because it's clearly not possible. Or it's a claim by a person somewhere in the middle of nowhere where people don't question such claims. And I'm yet to find anything proving the claim. Which is a pity.
