Truth is stranger than fiction, I'm told. And I believe it! The craziest things can happen when you're on a bike trip or even riding your hometown trail. This story is 100% true. It freaked me out at the time.. I present it here, now, for your entertainment.
I'm Scott. I explore, review and rate bike trails on this channel...and hopefully find a little joy in the journey. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing your story. I don’t think accepting the invitation was the mistake. The mistake was letting your guard down and sharing personal information with a complete stranger. At that point, warning lights and sirens should have been going off like crazy, and it would have been totally acceptable to let him know he crossed boundaries and then excuse yourself from the table. I suspect he was intentionally trying to make you uncomfortable to see how far he could push. Heck, I’m really surprised he didn’t try to follow you into the restroom! There is absolutely nothing wrong with stating your boundaries. Unfortunately, we’ve been conditioned by social norms to not rock the boat, else appear anti-social. Like you, I’m an introvert. I’d much rather ride by myself or a couple of good friends. Going on group bike tours where everyone shares meals together wears me out from all the chit chat and personal questions. I have learned - through practice - to politely say I’m not comfortable answering certain questions, and I’d be appreciative if they could change the subject. It works 100% of the time.

You just needed to say "Sorry, but that's not my life style." He probably, well, might have stopped his advances at that point. At least you now know, as you said, that as a solo hetero man, you should never accept an invitation to dine with a man you've never met. That kind of thing creeps me out, too. Oh, and by the way, I think you make outstanding bike trail videos. Great fun to watch. Your camera work and narrations are excellent.😁

Wow.. What a awkward spot to be in.. Santa of all persons.. Biking Solo is a Good Thing.. I’m very comfortable venturing out Solo.. but once in a Blue Moon I like sharing the Adventure.. The trick is finding a friend who has a similar pace.. Doesn’t mind stopping to enjoy the Journey 🚴‍♂️😎🍁

I've shared a table with complete strangers when in a diner that was full and there were no other tables. Had an enjoyable time and met some very nice people. I don't consider it weird even though others might. Having said that, I'm not going to be answering very personal questions to anyone. I don't really care who they sleep with but that's an inappropriate conversation to be having with a stranger. Just take control of the conversation and direct it back to topics more appropriate. That, and being polite, are the earmarks of good social skills. I noticed in college that children from well-to-do families were masters of this technique.

One of these days I may have to relay the story of Dave and Denny and the $60,000 horse named Ferragamo. That’s all I can say right now. Lol I knew there was a reason I stayed out of Denny’s.

My dad pastored 3 A/G churches in Alabama. But we did serve as camp evangelists at the A/G summer camp in South Carolina for a couple of years in the 80s. Bill Rinehart (sp?) was the state youth director at that time.

Santa was hoping for a grand slam and he didn't even order the breakfast, ended up striking out anyway, Scott, must have been those piercing blue eyes of yours that Santa was attracted to. Who knows, maybe he would have even taken up cycling as well. Next time, sit at the counter.

I have enjoyed your videos highlighting various biking trails, and watched this one hoping that the content would not go as I expected from the title. I am very disappointed about that....Consider, please, that this man has lived a long time behind a disguise he felt he had to assume because of social "norms". He finally had the courage to step out from behind that wall, and I truly do hope his daughter was happy for him (I have a dear friend who went through much the same experience--why in the world did you feel you needed to roll your eyes at the idea she would be happy for him??). You are blessed with a friendly face, so he felt encouraged to make a connection. Yes he was awkward and, probably, very inappropriate about it (who brings up "sex" in Denny's??), but he was probably pretty desperate to reach out to someone, and you shared some apparently pretty deep personal stuff with him as well. I am sure he realized his error which is why he left abruptly. I pray he never sees this video and your mocking him as "gay Santa".

I'm not going to be everybody's cup of tea, I realize that. As for his daughter's reaction...children of divorce, throughout their lives, are negatively impacted in ways that go far deeper than most of us can ever understand. Read a book titled "Primal Loss: the Now-Adult Children of Divorce Speak" from author Leila Miller for some insight into the ways "children" of divorce suffer, even throughout adulthood, no matter when the divorce takes place. Often they will put on a face and say certain things as a cope. It is unimaginable to me that even an adult child of divorce would be happy that her father divorced her mother and now wants to find creative (i.e. counterfeit) ways to "have sex" with other men. All of this just reminds me that I am increasingly a stranger in a strange land...in this world but not of it.

@@joyfultrails I have seen many other instances where a couple divorce after many years and one or the other turns out to prefer a partner of the same sex. I suppose these are people who felt embarrassed to show their true feelings and lived a lie for all those years. You may say they're finally liberated.

❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤ What a creep! That's a horrible situation! I feel so sorry for you! Funny too though! 👀🫣 I'm also an introvert. I don't like asking ppl questions either. I feel ppl will share what they feel comfortable with. I also don't want to hurt other ppls feelings or make others feel awkward, so I know exactly how you're feeling! I would also be trying to just be neutral, but screaming inside and just want to run away! Gosh, I would love to meet you on a bike ride! You could be my bike buddy! 😇🫣💐

Assuming that you might be a Christian (you stated is this video that you grew up in the church) why in the world would this lunch with a stranger freak you out...or been the "weirdest lunch ever"? Seems to me that this could have very well been a divinely appointed moment. Isn't that just the way that the Holy Spirit seems to work at times? Are Christians not called to be like Jesus? Are we not supposed to have compassion for lost souls? Wouldn't Jesus have welcomed the opportunity to break bread with a random stranger? A random, gay, stranger who God wanted to show Himself to, out of His great, gracious and long-suffering love? You might very well be the only believer (again, assuming you might be a Christian) that this gay man ever has the chance/opportunity to meet for the rest of his life here in this temporary, upside-down, sin-sickened world. What if God chose this moment as the last time that his man was going to hear the Gospel? What if God chose you to be the one who was supposed to be His hands and feet...right there at Denny's over a Grand Slam breakfast with a homosexual man? God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son...for random, gay, divorced, 71 year old men who look like Santa Claus. And for ALL of the rest of the lost sinners like you and me, whose faith is but filthy rags in the eyes of a righteous God, who ONLY separates us from our filthiness, by the shed blood of His Son. I relate more to the Prodigal Son, and I hope that I would NEVER lose sight of the fact, that God ran after me like I was the apple of His eye, and He embraced me like I was worth something to Him; with an undeserving love (pig stench, muddy filthiness and all) that only a loving Father could embrace me with.

You may be right. But after all that I’ve been through personally in the past four years or so… I’m just not there right now. Not ready to spring into action and become Billy Graham. In fact, I’ve never been like that because I’m not wired that way - like I said, I’m very much an introvert in person. I realize that no one gets a pass from the great commission, but we are given different gifts. “Evangelist” is listed as one of the five-fold ministry gifts. I have witnessed to people throughout my life - through songwriting, through a Christian radio show on a secular radio station that I hosted for 15 years, and in various other ways… But one on one evangelism in public restaurants would be a major struggle for me. One reason I called it the “weirdest lunch ever” was that whole two minutes of him staring at me in silence with a creepy grin. That would’ve been weird no matter who it was - man, woman, child, gay, straight or whatever. Also… It doesn’t seem that people of a certain social/sexual persuasion are at all open these days to anything but being celebrated and prideful. But good for you, glad that you’re so passionate about witnessing and such.
