Nutshell is one of my favourite songs from one of my all time favourite bands. The way the song ins constructed with the lyrics and the melodies, it is just heart wrenchingly beautiful. RIP Layne Stayley. Thank you for the beautiful music

I always imagined this solo like someone trying so hard to keep going but can hardly go on. Like being lost walking in the desert, you want to stop but you can’t, you have to keep taking one more step… one more… and another… one more step… fall down

To me, this song is about loneliness, fame, and discomfort with the life you live. The fact you'd rather die than live a meaningless life of false wealth and a lonely stage means a lot to me. A story of how all a life's pain is self chosen. A life of drug addiction and slow agonizing death.

That was almost as saddest moment in history. Watching Alls chains unplugged back in ninety four I believe. The fact that he had just gotten high and walked on stage to sing that song is Erie. Is crazy that Kurt died that year.

I just learned this song on guitar. It's been a favorite song of mine for many years and picked the guitar back up again and had to play it. Alice in Chains is a great band

Great analysis and thank you for including tabs and stripped down melody parts. I started listening to AiC in my late teens, and this (and many other of theirs) song contributed to my feeling of crushing loneliness. However, it didn't feel all that bad, their music largely inspired me to learn to play both guitar and drums. Alice in Chains are trully one of a kind band, even now.

The price of fame, not being left alone/no privacy. Being an addict and wanting to get your fix at the price of death. Layne's life in a nutshell. In the end, he got his wish. The saddest part about his death is his last convo with his friend Mike Starr, the last person to see him or speak to him.
@Theanonymousbystander
@Theanonymousbystander 4 ай бұрын
I took it more that he felt stuck in a nutshell. As an addict he couldn't escape, he knows he's going to die from it but he can't stop. And like you said his fame and vices made him constantly under the microscope of poperazi to where he was stripped of his privacy. I disagree he wished to die, rather he knew he was destined for that fate, because he was stuck in a nutshell
@dangibb1329
@dangibb1329 4 ай бұрын
@@Theanonymousbystander I wasn't saying that he wished to die. His wish was to be left alone and fix. This is what he told friends and his family, and this is what one of the most famous rock stars of all time did. He hid away, got high, and died. He alienated everyone so thoroughly that it took 2 weeks before anyone knew he had died. Imagine being so loved, so famous by the world, but so alone and broken inside. 'Nutshell' is a metaphor, to make a long story short.
@Theanonymousbystander
@Theanonymousbystander 4 ай бұрын
@dangibb1329 I misinterpreted when you said he got his wish, I agree. Poor guy died tragically. I'm glad they still honor him today through William. Yes "in a nutshell" is a common saying, but so is being "stuck in a nutshell" which is where I devert to what I believe he's singing about.

@@VARVIS_ I'm serious. Here's an excerpt of a review of Jar of Flies, from Encyclopedia Metallum (written by some other guy): "I grew up listening to Alice in Chains, and I remember getting this for Christmas one year. I think I was around 12, and was bang into Dirt at the time. I never expected this, back then I judged a book by its cover, and from the image I was expecting a really dark, heavy and oppressive release, which was exactly what I got, just not in the way I expected." Nutshell is the quintessential metal song, the perfect summation of what metal should be. I would say that it perfectly fits the spirit - or maybe on top of "spirit" I would even use the term "ethos" - of metal. I feel the same way about Fade To Black, so maybe it's just me.

this is the best song in the world not the saddest. I am a heroin addict just like Layne. I'm a 100% positive that this song down in a hole River of deceit wake up Junk head pretty much most of their songs are about heroin addiction you're trying to get clean and how hard it is how you want to let go of the drugs but they have become who you are and you don't know how you feel sober anymore how to deal with life and it's problems the ups and downs how it feels to not be sick when you don't have it how it feels to get out of bed without it and still feel good still be able to function s*** still get out of bed we're all sick of the drugs but because of the physical addiction we don't want to be sick and go through hell to get off it it's easier to stay on it even if we're not even using it to get high anymore cuz we can't we just use it not to be sick and to function we know that we will end up dead sooner or later if we don't get off it,but maybe death is better than having to go through the sickness and the withdrawals and losing part of your identity I can't imagine what it feels like anymore to be sober to go do things and remember them things all the emotions and feelings I've lost to not have to look for it every day 5 6 times a day to not worry about having to get ripped off or getting some bad shit that ain't going to get you unsick. to be ourselves is something we forgot turn on eat you from the inside out take your soul take your feelings take your identity. then if one is lucky enough to get off of it the cravings don't go away the withdrawal symptoms come and go for years the drug takes over and it never lets up you don't know how it feels to deal with life's problem sober the stress of lifes hustle and bustle and I don't even want to talk about facing all the bridges you burnt and trying to put them back together. to put yourself back together this goes through our heads every day 1000 times a day even if we can quit will we be able to stay off it cuz life's problems and our emotions might be too much to deal with being a whole different person because we will never be who we were can we go out and have a good time without drugs can we have friends cuz now it is so many people are on drugs will people accept and like us how will you accept and like ourselves I can go on and on and on and on. we're all sick of it we've all lost so much. all the things we did to get our daily fix multiple times. allthe silly crazy s***we did when we were feeling like iron Man times a billion 1000. we have to live with the wasted time and years and money we will never get back that we need will anyone trust us should they trust us. it's so hard it's so scary even though I'm thinking why would I want to get off of it cuz it is me I don't know how to be sober and I don't how to do so many things without my fix and I can go on and on but this s*** is depressing the f*** out of me right now because I wish I was sober I wish I didn't know what it feels like to be on heroin because it is the best feeling in the world and I can function so who cares if it destroy you and your life and your soul.. thanks for listening thanks for the video and the insight if anyone who comes across this is an addict good luck I wish you all the luck it don't get any better it gets worse and eventually you might find the strength to at least try to get of it and pray nothing happens to derail you but getting to complicated frustrating irritating are hard. good luck to everyone who knows exactly what I'm talking about or is going through exactly what I'm talking about or aren't sick and fed up with the drug and are revolving your whole life around it. rest in peace Layne. I hope you found that peace you couldn't find in life or got it back in death and please watch over all of us and help us find that piece we're all looking for without having to die.

I think your wolf howl analogy was sort of spot on, but ironically, I think you missed that he was not speaking to you. Anyone who has truly struggled with addiction knows this is a song about addiction. The first line is someone on the fringe of society observing the absurdity of modern life. Second line is, we are all going to die anyway. (the rest f the verse sums up as ) But the instinctual will to survive keeps him from unlifing himself but he knows his addiction is unsustainable to fend for himself -- and his battle is against heroin. He accepts responsibility, and he has no one to cry to because it was his own choice. And he has hurt his parents, so there is no place to call home.....NExt verse: gift of self is taken away -- heroin keeps him from being who he truly knows he is. Privacy is raked meaning people are raking him over the coals (have you been going to meetings, you should go to rehab, etc). He is repeating in his head he wants more heroin. And he has sort of chosen that will be how he lives the rest of his life -- that is who he has become. If he can not go see his family (home) while high (being who he is at this point in life -- that is himself now), what is the point of living such a lonely existence.
