A Camp in some Northumberland Crags

I went up to some Crags, I have visited before, for a camp to test out some winter gear,
It was very windy on the tops and the wind chill was really cold, the Cheviot was 50 mile minds and -15 wind chill but where I was camped was gusty but obviously much less, still hard to stand on the top,the temperature dropped below freezing, not as low as I had hoped but still a good test of my new winter gear,
Hand warmers were great,Even put them in the hut slippers,
Thick jacket and layers worked well with the best purchase, the down trousers, so warm.
I purchased the Rab down trousers as they use ethically sourced down.
So I will be back to the bivy for my next cold camp.

Spot on Adrian 👍, looks like a good place to camp, ideal that you can can go on either side of the crags wind depending, looks like you got some good cold weather gear there 👌, definitely needed in this weather lately. Always good to get out on a camp to destress no matter what the weather, as long as you’ve got the right gear with you, nice one mate, atb Mick 👍

Good to hear it was a warmer nights sleep Adrian , it was -3 when I walked to work at 6 this morning and it was fresh 🥶👍

Those hand warmers are a godsend, once went through 4 packets when I camped at -12. As always a great camp mate.

great tip about them hand warmers mate. Glad you were warm. Some people say weating lees in the bag works better but i layer up like you. Cheers.

Hi Phil, yes the hand warmers are magic, as for the sleeping bag, I would have agreed with the comments as I only ever used to wear thermals in the bag, but after my last camp and first cold one this year it looks like I am moving to layers, how things change ! But as long as we are warm, that’s all that matters, I don’t think you watched my last cold one as I can’t see a comment , Cheers Adrian

Great place to camp! I wonder if it’s always windy up there? Crisp, clear, dry weather though, perfect. All the new kit is looking good.

Hi Graham, it’s a great place, but the wind does blow, can’t believe how much I had on to be warm,where last year it was just thermals ! But at least I can be warm and so be out, Will try the bivy again next Cheers Adrian

So pleased you have sorted your gear and have had a good warm night. Kat and I had a bivi bag only camp on the beach last night with temperature down to -2.2C. Was definitely chilly but we kept warm. Pelased to hear the feet were warm this time. When you run low on the hand warmers try the disposable heated insoles in your boots and slippers theyre bloody great

Great in the cold when you have the correct gear, could be snow next week, time to dig my cold gear out and ditch the OEX Bobcat😅
