Not every support chain is a homerun. For all the great Duessel god tier conversations in the game, there are duds like Peri/Leo or Kyle/Lute. There’s a ton of supports in the series, but no game is safe from having a goose egg when it comes to good, or any, character development. Today I’m taking a quick look into the Aversa supports with Male and Female Robin. The goal? To talk about why Female Robin/Aversa’s support conversation… suuuuucks.

I agree. Awakening and Fates both have an issue where lots the supports focus on one of the character's tropes without looking into other aspects of their personality, which makes lots of characters come off as very one-dimensional. In other cases, a character's supports can completely contradict each other (Eg Nah) or ignore things from other supports (eg Peri). There are several good support chains, but every character is basically guaranteed to have at least one, or in many cases more, awful supports. Luckily they really stepped up the support game in echoes, and I feel that the S supporting and sheer amount of pair up options might have been partially responsible for some of the poor writing in Awakening and Fates. You learn more about Python as a character in just 3 supports than you learn about most Awakening/Fates characters in far more than that. Nah's just the character I bring up since while she has some great supports with Male Morgan (probably others too) her supports with the characters I mentioned are beyond awful-she's far from the only character in Awakening with bad support conversations!

EJKraft awates (lets call it that for lazyness sake) did have a bit of quantity over quality, but still felt like we got a lot more good than bad, with them fleshing them out a lot more than I feel people give them credit for. Let’s also not pretend every character’s support chain was gold in the older games. I am also gonna respectfully disagree and say echoes supports where a step back from awates, in both quantity, and quality. Quantity: most character can support with just another one (with exceptions of course), making it amazingly restrictive, and some choices you would expect to support, cannot, like Jesse (the LADIES MAN) cannot support with any female (???). Now this would be okay if the quality made up for it, but- Quality: most of the supports feel like small talk, that doesn’t change or develop the characters; now I myself am not asking for every support to be bible length worth of development, I am more than happy with small talk/chit chat/shooting the shit supports, but they make the majority of the supports of echoes, which I find extra annoying as they are so few of them in the first place and I find severely hampers the characters who don’t play an active, continues role in the main story. Awates had balanced the amount of serious development and the chit chat numbers much more than echoes.

I really like this shorter video format with only one or a couple of supports, you don't go super in depth on a character so it's easier to digest and I suppose it's way easier to make, it would also be cool if you made this with the opposite (good supports), to give some attention to unpopular characters, but I dunno, also, the editing was really nice, 10/10 video

To be fair, this support actually does a really good job showing the difference between both Robins. The female one is far less patient. Aversa cops this and targets a position of power and her temper in one move. I also like robin turning Aversa's insult right back on her in the female support. She insults robin both times by treating them as a child. Female robin simply reverses the implication and escalates it. I kind of felt the male a support was a bit unearned. Why did the affection suddenly break through? Aversa isn't just a bit lonely, she's got legitimate reason to distrust her own sense of reality. Trusting robin suddenly seems odd.
@Lechgang

Funnily enough the male support is actually the one that has more wrong with it. It might be more pleasant to sit through and offer the better ending for Aversa, but the second one is what I think most of us would do.

Here's the problem with F Robin's support, if you are writing a character trying to reform you don't make her have a rivalry with one of the most important members of the army. I really like the M Robin support since it shows Aversa's personality while also showing that she's changing. Out of all of the Spotpass units she was probably handled the best.

I'd argue that the rivalry between Aversa and Robin makes more sense. Let's not forget that Aversa was just that a villain so it is unlikely that they'd become best friends overnight. Or that Robin would instantly trust Aversa. Not only that but I think that a lot of people don't realize that Male and Female Robin do not have the same personality. Male Robin is actually very awkward, a trait that's compounded by him being a bit of an introvert. He's prone to being teased and pushed around a bit, and why a lot of his supports have him trying to change characters before understanding them. Hence Aversa teasing him before telling him her life's story. Female Robin is more outgoing, and also more observant. Hence why her unique supports have her first attempting to understand the person that she's talking to rather than change them. Which is why she's able to call Aversa out so quickly. And Aversa isn't one to back down from a challenge hence their friendly rivalry.

There was a really good support between Robin and Virion that was focused on a chess like strategy game. It was about how Virion beat Robin in a war game scenario but did so at the cost of the majority of his forces. Robin questioned his/her ability to lead, but Virion assured Robin that because Robin cared about people's lives was the very reason why he/she was qualified to be the army's tactician. There are two ways to take your statement, and depending on which way you go, we could have a problem. If you mean because Awakening has so many supports, there are a bunch that are bound to be worse or lazily written, then yes I would agree there are a lot of sub par supports by virtue of there being an absolute ton of them. The other way your comment can be taken is the one I'm hoping you are not trying to communicate, because your statement can be read as, "the majority of Awakening's supports suck," which I would categorically and fundamentally disagree with. Awakening has some of the best supports in the entire franchise like M!Robin and Cordelia, Lon'qu and Cherche, M!Robin and Sumia, F!Robin and Chrom, Robin and Virion, etc.... A lot of the supports connect deeply to character growth moments and connect to the main themes of the game, so I certainly hope you aren't trying to generalize Awakening's supports as a whole.

@@dezlovecraft5247 I'm a little lazy, so I don't want to try summarizing my post on this topic from the first time I posted this so please bear with me. My base argument is that I disagree fully with you or anyone who has a problem with F!Robin and Chrom's support because people fundamentally misunderstand what it is getting at. The C support is about establishing that Chrom may be noble in birth, but is not noble in action or perception. He doesn't see people as more or less important because they act like a 'lady,' or not. It also established that Chrom is a bad conversationalist, he does not know how to properly convey his words even to someone he considers a close advisor and friend. Conversely, for Robin, she feels a bit embarrassed at the fact that someone she admires and respects does not see her as a woman. It makes her feel a bit awkward and self conscious, but she understands Chrom didn't intend harm because it wasn't like she ever saw him as some high and mighty gentleman king. You are also meant to understand that the two have a mutual friendship before this whole mess started because they had been fighting together for a while now. The B support establishes how dense Chrom can be and that his mind really doesn't fixate on women. That isn't something that has ever been on his mind, especially when involved with a war going on around him. He stumbles into Robin in a compromising position for her, and she reacts accordingly, and in doing so, Robin understands that Chrom really just is not the type of person who judges a person's value based on how they act or what they look like. It was never his intent to compromise her. Chrom is embarrassed at his colossal blunder, but is beginning to see what he truly admires about Robin, the fact that Robin is smart, practical, and quick to forgive. This makes him awkward as he tries to say goodbye. While the B support was about Chrom realizing Robin's value to him, the A support is about Robin figuring out what Chrom means to her. This time, Robin makes a mistake and still a little self conscious about what happened before she lashes out even though she is in the wrong. She actually hurts Chrom in this exchange and like Chrom was before is thoroughly embarrassed about how she reacted, but Chrom responds to her with understanding and forgiveness. Chrom makes a joke about them being closer than ever now because of the experience to cut off the tension, but that statement also communicates that Chrom doesn't value Robin for her femininity, he values her for the bond they share. Robin responds in kind, affirming that their bonds and trust with one another will be a great asset in battle, thus establishing that both Robin and Chrom have high value to one another. Finally the S support completes the story by once again showing Chrom's painful inability to state what is on his heart. Robin confronts him on why he has been so distant lately despite being the one who affirmed the strength of their bonds. It is only when Chrom stops trying to act like he has the situation all together that he is finally able to freely admit that their bonds have grown with each other to the point where he can't ignore what is on his heart. Their relationship has grown to the point where he views her as the woman he holds most dear in his life. He always knew he had a special bond with her, but his experiences have brought him to the point where he can no longer deny how much she means to him. Robin reminds him of their duty and the cause that they are fighting for, but acknowledges that she loves and admires him to, and while now might not be the time for Chrom X Robin to be a thing, if they continue to support one another, they believe a time of peace will come where they can follow their hearts and be with one another. If you read into the subtleties, it actually becomes a really powerful support about seeing beyond bodily worth. What really makes a relationship is the bonds you share with the other, not whether or not they are a paragon of what it means to be a gentleman or lady. A true relationship can only form, when both sides have no pretenses about what the other should be and accept each other for who they are.

@@kcsupersonic1 I fully disagree with your argument, and let’s say you are right (which you don´t), then this support futher why I like M!Avatar better. This makes F!Avatar just look like a mean jerk all the time while also switching off her brain on interpretation (C) and logic (A), which is odd for a steemed tactician. B is understandable considering Chrom takes his time to leave and she'd be flustered without anywhere else to go, but the other parts irk me, like the walking in on someone naked thing one of the worst anime trope´s out there (I don’t need to defend this point either). I didn't like "I respect you so much I forgot you're a woman" with Bartre and Karla and I don't like it here neither. It's a shit way to show a character respects another character. He’s attempting to tell her that he likes her because, unlike the shallow, noble ladies of the Ylissean court, F!Robin is more than just her looks. Uh, and this wording of yours comes off as kinda awkward on your part, considering Maribelle is a character in the game. In fact, the Shepherds are all nobles, if I remember right, so aren't Sumia and Miriel also nobleladies? And somehow chrom acts different on Robin? I don’t blame the characters I blame the writers, and you are bending their reality a lot. C support: Robin threatens to hit Chrom over the head with a book. B support: Robin calls Chrom a "Slack-Jawed village idiot" (He deserves that, He did walk in on her while she was bathing after she told him to stay outside. Whether he heard her correctly or not is irrelevant, from her perspective he was completely in the wrong). A support: Robin throws rocks at Chrom. So basically, Robin threatens to abuse Chrom, then Robin verbally abuses Chrom, then she actually abuses Chrom. The entire support is nothing but one character going out of their way to hurt the other over every minor thing, even when its the fault of them. There is no way that is a good support.

Please do continue this series! I like the comparison to Wallace and Vaida's support. It's not often that people talk about pre-Awakening supports that miss the mark, at least in my personal experience. Anyway, videos about Nah's supports with Inigo and Laurent would be pretty fun, I think.

This was a pretty good video Ghast. I really liked how you analyzed F!Robin and Aversa support by comparing it other good and bad supports in order to fully comprehend what's wrong about the support (as in the comparison with the male counter-part and the Vaida & Wallace support). I hope you make this into a series, good job man!

i don't mind this i enjoy the full on support sciences but just showing the ones that truly and utterly suck is also fun plus it helps show the good from the bad (plus calling out some of the supports that are ignored because nostalgia goggles is good too)

@CarbonMalite

I think there's more to gain from criticizing Awakening's since the characters have a lot more to work with on average. You can screw up a Robin support in many ways, but you can only realistically screw up a Roy/Lyn support in one or two ways unless you're that incompetent that you screw up such basic character concepts, in which case it becomes unworthy of mention. Kind of a Corrin situation, just low hanging fruit.

if this series gives us more of you talking about supports i'm totally down for it, your support science on cordelia is what really got me interested in your stuff and the others are just as great even if it's not super in-depth essay-levels of character exploration and explanation it's still a good time and supports are the kind of thing it's just interesting to see people talk about imo

Chrom and female Robin's supports suck a lot too. For being between the two main characters it's just the "accidently walks in and sees you naked" trope twice without any of the heart to heart that Chrom and male Robin have.

While I could agree that the maleRobin support was 10x better than femaleRobins, I don’t think its completely meaningless and an excuse to bash her. The support gives perspective, at least to me. What would happen if there were two tacticians in the army who are both confident with their abilities and would like to lead the army to victory? This could lead to arguments, even a competition, because they would like to see who’s more capable as head tactician. This support shows more of Robins competitive snd her confidence in herself, which should be good since tactics are one of the few things that she remembers. Aversa also exudes confidence, although we knew that even without watching the support. Like the Hot-spring scramble support with Tiki, the support shows Aversa’s side of denial, where she sees herself as “one of the youngsters” or at least still in Chrom’s age range. I wont make arguments about age but as one of the comments of the supports mention, Aversa’s 20 when Chrom is 12.... just let that sink in. Moreover, The support demonstrates how Aversa is the type to cheat in duels if it means victory for her, which fits her well. We can also see that Robin is the type to over prepare in duels, creating an escape route incase of something dangerous or bad happening to her, which makes sense because she wouldn’t want to be gravely injured or she wouldn’t be much help and I doubt that she wouldn’t want to bother the others with taking care of her. This IS Aversa after all, who knows what she would try to do. I know these are extremely obvious but I still appreciate “funny supports” because they put the characters in interesting situations. Aversa is one of the character who rely on their Robin support to expand of their personalities, worldviews and backstories and even though it wasn’t accomplished perfectly here, it’s still something.

Try Mozu and Xanders.. They go from mutual respect to suddenly boom, marriage. (Not to mention that it makes zero sense for the Norian Crown prince to marry a hoshidian farmer girl.) If the support would ahve ended at A, i'd say: cute support, perfectly fine. But the S-Support completely ruins it.

I wish I could give some proper feedback, but all I can say is that I enjoy this rant-y format too. Since I barely ever played with female robin I don't know too many of her unique supports but I remember this one and it was as bad as I remembered. Also showing the male robin support in contrast (or any other support that shows how much better it could be) makes it clear what has been missed out on. (I also didn't remember the male robin support being that good, seems like I misremembered that one) If I remember correctly I felt the same way about the supports of both Robins with Gangrel, though I might misremember some of that too. In any case keep up the great videos ghast!
