I 100% don't regret pursuing a PhD but as I'm getting closer to entering the work force, I now see how many sacrifices I've actually made in life to get to where I am today. Hope this video helps you (a) feel less alone if you've been feeling behind in life compared to those around you and/or (b) think about what you're willing to sacrifice if you're thinking about doing a PhD.

So relatable! As a grad student, I always feel behind when I compare myself to my friends who have graduated a while ago, have full time jobs, and are getting married, having kids, and buying houses. It's hard not to compare myself! But I know I will get there, just a little later in life. And I just have to tell myself that that's okay. We all move at a different pace and have a different journey in life! 😊

I appreciate your honesty! As an older PhD student, it took a lot of soul searching for me to commit to the PhD. But I also find myself not really seeing the traditional modes of success as part of my definition of success (house, car, kids etc.). Having my PhD, researching and teaching are what i define as successful. So, don’t worry about feeling behind. Your path is your alone. Do what makes you happy and forget the rest!

love the behind the life concept! and love the honest convo, it's literally something i have to force feed myself because i feel all those emotions 10-fold everyday. Truly insane how we manage to pull through

I was in the same situation while finishing up the PhD. I knew a big shift in personal and professional life was coming up, so I started doing my homework. Reading a few books before and after defending helped to put me on a path, so I'm sharing my list here: 1. The Milllionaire Next Door by Thomas Stanley 2. The Automatic Millionaire by David Bach I also started listening to Dave Ramsey Show via KZfaq and that led to a host of other podcasts. Having done a PhD helps, though. Living on a meagre PhD stipend for half a decade likely has taught all of us how to live modestly. We can keep doing this and use the surplus money on paying off debt and investing.

Hi Anne thanks for sharing this. Ironically I am actually feeling behind too. I finished my bachelor in chemistry in 2013. Was working in the medical device industry until 2018 where I moved out of BC to study my masters at western which I completed in 2021. Most of my friends are engaged/ married/ have properties too. I'm still doing my best to transition out of this mindset, but seeing this video sparked some courage.

Investing (in stocks) is probably the second most important step I took, aside from getting an education of course. Einstein even said that compound interest is the 8th world wonder! If you educate yourself somewhat in personal finance and investing, you could accelerate your race towards getting debt free. There's a cool channel (Debt over it, personal finance with Leila) where the host vlogs her journey to get debt free (and she's a microbiologist!). Another tip: read 'Rich dad, poor dad' ;)

Great stuff! Just found your content! Im here on Vancouver Island, went to Uvic then Queens and heading to a PhD in England. Im also in heft debt which keeps me up some nights. Vancouver is so freaking expensive!!!

I'm already 23, been in school for a long time being careless & it took me a while to figure out what I want to major in (Bachelor's in Psych as the first step) and see what I truly want as a career in life....and I haven't graduated with anything yet 😰 so trust me, if anything, I sometimes feel more behind than you 😦
