Congratulations on your bucket lister! I actually saw a full set of crotal bells last month hanging in a barn. When I go back, I will ask to record them all ringing together so we can hear what they sound like. I enjoy your videos!

Todd, over the top with personal and relic finds. Loved the pallet paint brush broach, shoe buckle, crotal bell, big cow bell and the spoon. The lead toy soldier and tootsie car was awesome. So much coin and wheaties are my favorite. That was a lot of digging even if you had some coins spills. Great day Todd.😀👏👏👍

Todd, I believe I remember you saying something about , if you don't detect on iron settings because you want to eliminate "junk", you may not find treasures. Cheers, Rik Spector
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives 7 ай бұрын
That is true....even the best detectors hear the iron, but you rarely see channels showing these types of finds. Not sure why other than its just treasure hunting. I wish they would be honest and show the trash too...some channels do.

Oh sweet crotal bell! I think it's an old one! Sunburst design with the "sprue" cast with the bell, as opposed to later ones where the loop was added on after casting. Older castings had more tin than copper for the grey tone too. I love them things! The palette pin was a great find. The 4 medallion like pictures are interesting & could've had some additional meaning to the owner. Excellent finds! I hope you got to keep the bell!

Thanks Spicenens....I let the landowner have what he wanted since his wife's family are the Staubs. They didn't want me to do a history lesson on them so I cut straight to the detection on this one. I gave him the Wheaties....he wanted the Crotal Bell too, but his wife wasn't interested so he put it back and let me bring it home.....I'm glad he did!!

Hey buddy. I was going to be lazy and ask you about the origin of the name “crotal”. I decided to look it up for myself and post it here for your viewers. I apologize it is so long. Crotal bells (Greek 'crotalon' - castanet or rattle) are various types of small bells or rattles. They were produced in various pre-Columbian cultures. In Europe they were probably made from before the early Middle Ages; though many founders cast bells of this type, the Robert Wells bell foundry of Aldbourne, Wiltshire, produced the largest range. The first medieval designs came in two separate halves into which a metal pea was introduced and the two halves were then soldered or crimped together. Somewhere around 1400 they were cast in a single piece with a ball of metal inside.[1] Crotal bell cast by the Robert Wells bell foundry of Aldbourne, Wiltshire Crotal bell from Panama, gold, 6th-10th century Crotal bells, also known as rumble bells, were used on horse-drawn vehicles before motor vehicles were common. They were often made of bronze with a slot cut down the side. These bells were used to warn other users of horse-drawn vehicles (mostly on country roads) that another vehicle was approaching. On smaller vehicles, they were hung on a small leather-and-iron harness bracket above the horse's collar; on larger vehicles, such as delivery wagons, they were driven into the wooden frame of the wagon.

Hey Gordon thanks for the history lesson. You think as common as wagons of all sorts were you would find lots of these but they aren’t so easy to find. Maybe they are along the old roads
