This video quickly covers every section of the Home Assistant interface with emphasis on the parts I think are most important for Home Assistant gardeners. It also serves as a primer on how some key features of Home Assistant work and explains some important terms and functionality. The version shown in the video is the most common version of installation which includes the Home Assistant Operating System, Container, and Core (Raspberry Pi 3/4, ODROID, Asus Tinkerboard, Generic x86-64 (e.g. - Intel NUC)).

Since I'm getting into Home Assistant stuff now in my build, I thought I'd make an up-to-date reference video that walks through the interface and does a super quick 101 on how stuff works and what I think is important.

@@marvineis5525 It seems as though HA natively has all the power for Automation that Node Red can offer (for projects such as this, anyway). I used to use Node Red but I dont think I will need to anymore - its nice to keep things simple and reduce number of software components

This video is so underrated, your skill as a teacher is greatly appreciated, learnt more from this video than the weeks of messing around. Hoping from concept to concept and getting nowhere , superb , I would suggest a VPD controller build/setup tutorial or A plant management schedule guide. 11/10 Awesome , informative and efficient. Thank you Thank you

Click and hold "Home Assistant" at the top left and let go after 3 sec and you get a wobbly menu. You can rearrange the sidebar and delete all the 'I don't use these' items. Great content! Excited to see your HA videos again.

Nice, I didn't know about the holding thing. I don't usually have those icons up but wanted the defaults in place for the video - I'd been accessing the sidebar editing wobbly menu from the user prefs like a complete chump. Any other 'lil tips n' tricks?

Dude. I found this channel an hour ago and I am immersed. You have done everything I have been meandering around, slowly doing over the past year. I am at the point where I am in the process of automating c02, cooling, reservoir management, airflow and temperature with a raspberry pi, and I was trying to figure out how to get that all accomplished when BOOM i found your channel. You have saved me so much time via the trail and error I would have undertaken. Subscribed and enrolled as a member, thanks!

Super cool and pretty informative. I've managed a few automations over the past couple weeks. One I really like is having notifications send to my cell for when my fans have been on for an extended period of time. Helpful to dial in the temp and humidity settings. Also fun to get a ding and tell people my plants are texting me.

Great video. I would really like to understand your VPD setup you have there. I run home assistant for many things in my house, but also growing veggies similar to you. Is there somewhere I can look up how to build the VPD setup?
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
I'm working on sharing it all in my garden rebuild playlist but it'll be a bit before I can get to the VPD sensors - I can tell you that I'm using a BME 280 for humidity and an MLX 90614 for IR as well as ambient temperature though. I put them on a little PCB and mounted it in a 3D printed enclosure that attaches to a flexible arm that I can point at leaves.

@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like there's an API for Pulse stuff so if you got your API key you could likely pull the info into Home Assistant, but it seems like you have to upgrade your subscription to get the key. Don't quote me on any of this because I have not tried to pull values in via HTTP.

I've followed your video about using an ESP and an octocoupler to dim a meanwell driver, but i do have the weird light curve / range issue with gamma_correction: 1.0, with any value i must admit, i had this issue since forever, any clue to what might be happening here ?

Ah, yeah those CV+CC drivers are trickier because their dimming behaviour also depends on how much current the light wants from the driver. If, with no dimming applied, the lights are only using half the current that the driver can produce, the whole first half of the dimming range will do nothing. Look into “min_power” and “max_power” for the ESPHome Output component and try adding them to your config and playing with them to modify the range.

I'm really struggling with ESPHome. I'm trying to write my own firmware using ESPHome so that it can do all the usual data reporting, and be configured via Home Assistant, but I want it to make "educated" decisions if the network is down. Do you have some time we could collab or talk?
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын

@@LEDGardener ok. I saw you use it, but I can't find anything online about how to do more advanced stuff. Everyone seems to use it to simply expose a sensor and that's all. Apparently there's more but nobody documents anything on it. So yeah. I'm kinda lost for sure lol. It's no problem though. Do you do anything special to secure your home assistant stuff? Maybe another video topic if you do?
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathantron maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re asking - you saw me use something like what you’re after? I believe you can build automations in the ESPHome yaml that will run even if the ESP loses connection to the network. Is that what you’re trying to do?
@nathantron
@nathantron 2 жыл бұрын
@@LEDGardener yeah. Exactly. I need the main one to be self sufficient in case the entire network goes down. It has a bunch of sensors on itself, but im trying to make it use other devices on the network for more data if they are available. Haha. My setups crazy.

Have you seen this page? esphome.io/guides/automations.html "...You could write an automation to do this task in Home Assistant’s automation engine, but ideally the IoT should work without an internet connection and should not break with the MQTT server being offline. That’s why, starting with ESPHome 1.7.0, there’s a new automation engine. With it, you can write some basic (and also some more advanced) automations using a syntax that is hopefully a bit easier to read and understand than Home Assistant’s."
