Hi Kristina! It's been a while since I watched one of your videos. I started having major health problems starting 4 years ago. I'm glad to see you're still on KZfaq. I've always flossed before brushing for decades, just for the reasons you describe. Thank you for all the oral advice you give. Best wishes to you and all your endeavors.

@@askahygienist Aw, thank you for your concern. I'm touched you remember me, and I pray all is well with you. I still go to the same dental office where we met. I miss seeing you. A quick synopsis: I came down with a fatal lung disease in 2019, that was nearly fatal. My lungs collapsed right after Thanksgiving of 2021, and I had a lung transplant several days later. I spent 4 months in the hospital, and have been slowly recovering ever since. The new lungs are finally working fine. But the rest of my body took a beating. If I remember correctly, I believe you had a child during this time. Congratulations and a belated Happy Mothers Day to you!

I have some Dr. Jen’s on the way and have already been using David’s, and have gone through tubes of Boka, Risewell, and Apagard over the past few years. Looking forward to trying the Jen’s. Confirmed with them they use rod shaped nHA just like David’s but with 10% instead of a mystery. My favorite so far has been Apagard but hopeful the Jen’s tops it.

Hi Kristina! This may be a silly question but I wanted to ask if there's a difference between brushing "at night" and "right before bed" - I'm someone who has dinner about 4 hours before bedtime and I never snack after dinner, so I end up brushing my teeth about 3 hours before bed. Should I be holding off until just before I go to sleep as opposed to brushing an hour after dinner, or does it make no difference whatsoever?
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 2 ай бұрын
Technically you should wait 30 min after eating to brush but otherwise, no if you don’t snack after, you can brush earlier.

What mouthwash in the morning and evening would you suggest.😊
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 2 ай бұрын
I don’t use mouthwash myself. For prophylactic use, it’s kind of redundant, plus it’s associated with high blood pressure because it kills of beneficial bacteria which regulates blood pressure 🤷‍♀️ if there is a specific mouthwash that a dentist recommends to treat a specific issue, I would listen to him/her.

Hello! :) What do you think about water flossing? I do the regular floss and my dentist said that I mustn’t use regular floss around my implant (it is a single implant on a lower molar). I was complaining to him that quite a lot of food is getting stuck not only in-between the implant and adjacent teeth, but also under the crown itself (between the gum and the crown) and it takes a lot of flossing to get it all out. He told me that I should use waterfloss instead of regular floss for an implant. I searched a lot in this topic, but the information that I find online contradicting. He said that a regular string of floss might get broken and some strands could get stuck in the implant that will lead to inflammation. I have had the implant for a year already, and he said that the gums are looking good, so it’s good that I flossed (better than not flossing), but I should switch to waterfloss.
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 13 күн бұрын
Oh, interesting recommendation. The rule I know/was taught about implants is you definitely need to floss them. Biofilm can accumulate on the implant and cause irritation, and that’s not something a water flosser is able to remove. Need to manually wipe it off. Usually when you have an implant replacing a molar, you are bound to have more space between it and adjacent teeth, causing more food to get stuck; but as long as you stay on top of flossing everything out, should be fine. Glad to hear you got a good report about your gums recently.

Any reason why you don't use a water pick instead of floss? They're relatively cheap and rechargeable.
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 5 күн бұрын
Waterpik is not a replacement for floss unfortunately. It’s like washing dishes. It’s not enough to just run them under hot soapy water, you need to wipe the gunk off with a sponge. Same with teeth. The water pressure is not enough to remove the sticky film of plaque on our teeth, it needs to be manually wiped off with floss. It’s the same reason why it’s not enough to just use mouthwash; you need to actually brush your teeth.

Hello Kristina! I wanted to know if it's okay if you don't have sensitive teeth. Can I use baking soda as my toothpaste morning and night? I googled an RDA toothpaste chart, and they all say baking soda has an RDA of 7, which should be better than any toothpaste. "My logic." Also, what about using 3% hydrogen peroxide as a nightly mouthwash and washing your mouth out afterward? Looking forward to hearing your response! thank you! 🪥
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 2 ай бұрын
Hi there, great question! So yes, technically baking soda has a pretty low RDA value (funny I always thought it was more abrasive, but it's not!), so you certainly can use it. There are some ingredients in toothpaste that are helpful to protect against cavities that baking soda alone does not provide; many dental pros would probably not recommend using only baking soda. HOWEVER, I find that a combo of good diet, lifestyle, and oral care habits (brushing and flossing properly, consistently) are the best way to prevent dental problems. So...take that as you may. On hydrogen peroxide - it's not recommended to use on a regular basis. Temporary use can help heal up wounds, but prolonged use will actually irritate the soft tissues more.
@Ricky24315
@Ricky24315 2 ай бұрын
@@askahygienist I always thought baking soda was more abrasive too! That does make sense. A good diet, lifestyle, and oral care routine do play a big part in the process. So a good daily toothpaste is still recommended; I will be on the search for some of those! Ohh I see that is great to know about hydrogen peroxide, thank you so much for answering my questions

How can I keep my breath fresh throughout the day because obviously your breath can stay minty all day
@askahygienist

A few things to try: -drink lots of water -address any sinus issues (I do the saline rinse) -address gut health (probiotics, eat fiber, I also take a chlorophyll supplement to cleanse gut) -you can also have some mints handy. I use mint flavored Ice Chips, I have link in description to them. Other mints like Altoids leave a lot of residue on tongue which causes worse breathe I feel like. - brush and floss regularly and SCRAPE the TONGUE. Big contributor to bad breath :P

@@askahygienist yeah, it’s out of stock on their website too…Dr. Jen does have a fluoride with hydro paste that kinda put me off though. I did look into Dr. B’s Fygg paste but it’s not available on Amazon which is more convenient for me and many reviews keep mentioning it needs to be shaken bc it separates too much bc of the lack of sls which, if sold on Amazon, I would happily adjust. I found one similar by DR. PAUL O'MALLEY HOLISTIC DENTIST- Nano hydroxyapatite Toothpaste Fluoride-Free, Pro Mineralizer Toothpaste: Dentist Formulated Remineralizing Anti Cavity Xylitol Toothpaste, Enamel Support Sensitive Teeth Toothpaste. Free of flouride, sls, vegan and I like that it informs how much hydro is in it. Worth looking into. I am expecting mine to arrive soon!

🪥 My dentist suggested oral b io, but Ive been wanting the Oral-B 5000. All the reviews are sayings the IO is better. My teeth aren't good, my fault, but im trying to fix that with the complete and proper oral hygiene care. Does the IO matter?🪥
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 2 ай бұрын
honestly, I would say not really. technically it can achieve a superior clean, but if you use your 5000 properly, it can do a perfectly sufficient job in cleaning your teeth. I've been using a manual toothbrush as well as a lot of off-brand electric toothbrushes over the years and my teeth are fine. Technique is what matters most.

So if I go to the dentist and she/he said there's a gray area between my teeth on the xray that needs a filling. Should I ask if the cavity has penetrated through the dentin first? Because if it's just within the enamel, I might have a chance for it to remineralized with good daily oral care, right? 🪥
@askahygienist
@askahygienist 2 ай бұрын
You can certainly ask, to keep them on their toes haha but generally when the dentist determines it’s a cavity, it means it’s already into the dentin.
