When I was a junior high school student, an English teacher taught me, “If you don't understand what an English native is saying, you have to say ‘please say it again,’ ‘pardon me,’ or ‘pardon’ in short.” I often used “what” when I visited Australia. We have those words in Japanese. Today’s video is about specific Japanese words. (comedy-taste)

So funny!!! I’ve seen other videos teaching Japanese words but without facial expressions. What a difference facial expressions make! They are very much part of the language and make understanding a lot easier.

Thank you for the interesting discussion on language. Here in the US we also have many phrases to say when not understanding someone. Of course, the most polite is "excuse me?". Or "pardon me?" A more casual but less formal is to say "I'm sorry?" Other terms: "Say again.." "Come again." "What!?" is used I think more often when someone says something that seems unbelievable or extraordinary that seems difficult to comprehend. "I saw a bird sitting next to a cat.." "WHAT?".... Younger people, mostly "dudes" often use "say what?"...but a bit rude. I had an assistant once who when I would ask him to do something and he didn't hear me would exclaim: "say what?". And related to this is another phrase that is used, again with mainly young guys, but in response to "thank you". They might reply "no problem" instead of "you're welcome."

I loved this video! It was very funny. I'm a Japanese man from Tokyo. I didn't know that Osaka people use that short expression to casually say "What?". I'd love to hear you speak the Osaka dialect.
