When I went to Okinawa in 2019, the teacher I trained with refused to take payment from me. He told me to use my money to go drinking instead. 😂😂

I want to visit Okinawa (and Japan!) So badly! Me and the Girlfriend are saving for it currently. Visiting and training would be AMAZING And eating my bodyweight in Sushi and Sashimi. Love your Okinawa series by the way. I hope someday we can get more of Jesse in Japan.

Absolutely right! It should be a common courtesy when going to a dojo you don't normally train to wear a white belt. One of the core teachings in karate is, be humble. I've always believed in that simple courtesy and it had served me well when visiting other schools. Strangely, it's not something you hear very often in the states.

I can't wait until I can save up the money to visit Okinawa. I've gotten out my gi and Okinawan karate manual from Shoshin Nagamine, and have slowly been practicing again, starting with the basic forms thanks to you and Sensei Seth. It's made me excited to practice again. I need to get some more time under my belt, and money in my wallet before I'm able to. But I really want to.

Also if your training at a legitimate karate dojo, you should be hearing a lot of these common Japanese phrases. When I was child studying in the states Matsubayashi Ryu the Sensei insisted we learn these phrases with no regard that we would ever go to Okinawa. Rather, I think it was to honor tradition and heritage. Sensei Lorhding was a great teacher and I wish, as an older man now, I could thank him for everything he taught me that I didn't understand then but deeply value now.

Oh wow! My Sensei was in this video. I trained with Miyara Sensei and Miyagi Sensei in Futenma. Miyagi sensei’s kobudo is amazing! I was also invited to train at Kina Sensei’s Dojo in Naha who was also in this video. Awesome!

We met Sensei James on our 3rd trip to Okinawa, the Dojo Bar is a fantastic place to meet others. James is a great host. Left our graffiti on the Dojo Bar walls. Our guide Sensei Masuo Shibasaki managed to get us a private tour of the Karate Museum and a police escort to visit the Gichin Funakoshi shrine. Okinawa is a fantastic place to visit especially for anyone who is dedicated to the study of Martial Arts.

Wonderful tips and beautiful footage, ありがとうございます! The first time I had the opportunity to train in Okinawa, I caused a misunderstanding by saying “Hai, Sensei, wakarimashita” when Sensei would ask if I understood the drill. Seems I was conveying the feeling of “complete, deep, comprehension” instead of “Yes, Sensei, I understand the instructions”. Should’ve just stuck with “Hai!” 😅

I trained for a week in Okinawa with Uechi Sensei and Andy Sloane back in 2016. I had already been training for 2 years here in the States. One of the best experiences of my life

There are only two main steps you really need to know. 1. Contact whoever you want to train with and make sure it is possible. 2. Just go. The rest will sort itself out.

I would add a visit to either Suriedo or Ippon-Do for some Okinawan Karate supplies. Additionally, Asato Dojo has some fantastic supplies as well, still love my sai I got there before I left Okinawa.

Is there a custom regarding a color of the envelop that one should be using for the fees? When I practiced in Singapore and Taiwan I was advised to use the red one. Is there anything like that in Okinawa? Thank you.

A big part of going to Okinawa for me is to meet and interact with the people of Okinawa. Always an amazing and fun time! And so much history. I cannot recommend it enough to any karateka. If you love and are passionate about karate you will love it. And if you aren't you'll love it too. Such a beautiful place.
