I think JEH did a great job portraying Freddy, that taunting gesture of rubbing his fingers together is an interesting tick to give the character, it always stood out to me. Having the environment flicking back and forth between reality and the dream was really cool as well.

Fun fact: The actor who portrayed Dean in this film, even though his scenes were so few, decided to stay awake for two days straight prior to filming the scenes for the film. A superb example of Method Acting that gave his dialogue an exhausted, almost ragged delivery

The filmmakers approached this remake very seriously, with respect for the original and with a great about of thought. That is evident from the Blu-ray extras, which are almost depressing because of how positive and thoughtful the filmmakers are compared to how abysmal the movie ended up being. It's always important to remember that no one sets out to make a bad movie and this one is a prime example of that.

My favorite thing about this one is the reason Freddy keeps playing around with them isn't so he can get stronger through fear of remembering him,but he torments them to pure exhaustion making every effort to stay awake useless also the lack sleep they get now the more they have to later giving him more he can do to them.

My introduction to Robert England wasn't this series but a tv series, which I believe was the 1980s mini-series "V" where he played an endearing alien named Willie. His first appearance here shows his explaining to an earthling woman that he "is just". "Just what," she keeps asking, and finally understands that he's trying to say he's lost. That is about the only thing I remember about the series, and I always remember it with affection.

Seriously posed question... What exactly is MORE dark than 'Child-killer' or 'Child-killing Demon'?? Robert England as 'Freddy', (Rogers/Mercury/Flintstone?), provided elaborate kills and morbidly timeless one-liner's, ("What a rushh!"), which accomplished three things with 80's audiences: 1) Eclipsing Fred Krueger's actual "villain" status, framed with the backstory of his Nun mother's horrific 'gang-rape' by Asylum inmates. 2) Erasing the narrative of his 'Mob-Justice' execution at the hands of grieving Elm St. parents. 3) Cementing his place in Pop Culture as a figure of what I call, "Proxy-Iconic" status. Think...Hannibal Lecter, Loki or Harley Quinn. So as a man who not only saw the first 'Nightmare...' film in a Los Angeles theater when "Night Stslker" R. Ramirez was killing REAL people in Orange County, but also as a guy that served 17 years in prison for my encounter with a child molester, I'm curious what is "darker" OR likeable about...'Rorschach on Elm Street'??

I liked the idea of Freddy being innocent and the parents just being assholes that murdered him, but they didn’t lean into that aspect enough for it to feel really credible in this one, and then just tell you that Freddy really was evil. Thought that would have made for an interesting take on the story and really make this movie have a reason to exist. Like, if it’s just telling the same story as the original it feels unnecessary. The original still holds up. I did love Freddy’s voice this one though, it really brings a great scary aspect to the character. And I also dug the blurred lines of some of the dreams with reality, those moments were nicely done. I felt the acting as a whole was better, but the story itself ended up weaker. Which is too bad, I had pretty decent hopes for it when it released. Loved the reaction! Always a great time getting to revisit movies as you watch them and see what other peoples views of them are. Keep up the great work!

My favorite thing about this remake is how they told Freddy's sick story. It was detailed in a very creepy way compared to the OG Nightmare films. People always knew Freddy's story but actually seeing his death unfold was amazing, especially considering he definitely deserved what he got. It was so satisfying to actually watch that happen in the movie. I also liked the ceiling kill and Dean's death was pretty awesome for the first kill, in my opinion. The way he died was so horrific. Kris just standing there watching him apparently slit his own throat was insane.
@aaronshouting588
@aaronshouting588 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree… I thought the flashbacks and especially the backstory of Freddy were the biggest detriments to the plot! There’s a reason why the details were left vague in the original… Freddy is supposed to be a Boogeyman who just appears in your dreams… and it wasn’t until the last act of the original movie is when we found out he was a child murder…. Done. No more details needed! All the more frightening!!

Same. It was always hinted at what he was(not just a child killer, which was awful enough) that made all of the parents snap and kill him. It was interesting to be able to actually see him get his just desserts.

7:00 In the original Nightmare movie the scene with the head coming out of the wall at Nancy they cut a hole in the wall and used spandex for Wes I believe to push through. Today no one wants to put in the work of practical effects they just go to a computer with CGI that should look better in 2022 than a movie from the eighties and nineties but they don't. A computer CGI effect is not scary no matter wat they create IMO.

My main issue with this remake was mainly the teens. You don't get to see some fun, happy-go-lucky kids who progressively lose it as Freddy haunts them. There's not even an actual group of friends who hang out together all the time. These kids here are already dead before being killed off, with expressionless faces and monotonous dialogue deliveries. You don't get to like them, and therefore to fear for them, feel sympathy towards them or just hope that your favourite one makes it, since there's not a single one who could be your favourite really. So yeah you just watch them as they mumble their lines, get killed, and repeat. Zombies limping about in a constantly dim-lit and wet set, with no blue skies or a sunny weather that would've helped a bit to get a contrast between what was cool before, and what is grim now that Freddy's around. At least that's how I feel about it. And I really really have a hard time buying that not a single one of them had any recollection at all of what happened on multiple occasions at pre-school. So upon your request, my positive comment about this movie would be that it's only 95 minutes long

CGI blood and fire works well enough. But yea bad CGI is equivalent to the bad puppets they had in those 70s and 80s B monster movies. It's flat and jarring and doesn't convey our reality well. Another reason is that they don't understand how to add gravity to a scene to make us invested. Consider that the original Godizilla from 1954 was just a rubber puppet, but its story metaphor for the atom bomb was so profound that people excused its clumsy looking movements.

As someone who is currently getting a visual effects degree and fell in love with practical effects from watching 80’s horror as a kid, CGI is much cheaper to create, you really only pay for time pretty much, the more time, the better the effects essentially, unfortunately more and more companies rather do visual effects with CGI now because of cost and time
@samspade8830

It's funny you're saying that because Mr. and Mrs. Movies compared the budget between the original and the remake in this video and it seems practical effects are way cheaper. Unless you adjust the original to inflation, but even then, I still feel the original would've been cheaper to make with practical effects and all. Practical effects may take longer to produce since it's done by hand but cost to me seems way more efficient. But what do I know? You're the one getting the visual effects degree.

Then why does it cost so much for a bloated cgi crap fest these days versus a full practical film like Terrifier?. If Hollywood had made Terrifier 2 it'd be 200 million and look like ass. It just doesn't track, the more cgi, the higher the budget and the worse a film looks. Nothing beats practical, remember the example of The Thing prequel.

Positives- the micro naps was a nice touch, the possibility that Kruger may be innocent was inventive, Jackie Earl Haley's performance was damn good & returning Kruger to his more horrific roots was needed. Cons: the CGI was unneeded & horribly fake, a lot of scenes were very cookie cutter from the original and for a movie that deals with the possibilities and potential of nightmares, this movie was very unimaginative. Not the worst of the bunch (still looking at you, Freddy's Dead) but probably tied for second worst with number five.

@@molasorrosalom4846 he was strongly hinted to have done that in the original but they veered away immediately when they saw how popular the character was becoming, turning him into a cartoon. I thought the way they presented it in this movie (showing nothing, no descriptions, just the reactions) was powerful enough and showed just what an evil piece of s*** Krueger was. I totally understand your point though; people have visceral reactions to kids, the elderly and animals being hurt in any way, let alone in what is supposed to be an entertaining venue. Since they went that route though, I would have much preferred him being killed out right rather than returning at the end but hey, they got to set up that possible sequel, you know.

Kruger possibly being innocent goes nowhere though and was never believable to the audience because we literally see him licking Nancy's face telling her she smells different now like how a child molester acts lol. The shooting script was actually a hybrid of 4 different drafts the Freddy being innocent thing was taken from one of those drafts where in that draft he did turn out to be innocent which is where the movie should have gone to be different.

@@boomstickcritique902 wasn't that part where he licks her face later on in the movie after they learned that he was a child molester? I think it would have been a ballsy play on their part if he was innocent/the glove was planted on him by the real killer and he was burned alive with it so now dreams he uses it to kill the kids of the people who burned him. I've read reviews where people say the Remake ending is better because they don't like the "cheap looking dummy through the window" effect in the Original. But the CGI is so bad in THIS ending I'd argue it was worse considering the 1984 movie had a $1.1Million budget and the 2010 Remake had a $35 Million budget.

Today CGI is cheaper than 2010. Since 2016, every CGI movie were made same time as pre production started which is why it can be done under 1 year. The bad thing is, CG artist don't have time to polished their visual. That's why most of CGI is bad. I give you example, go watch ironman 2 vs ironman in endgame. In ironman 2, we can clearly saw reflection on Tony's helmet but in endgame, those details are nonexistent. Ironman 2 were made more than 1 year while endgame were made in less than 1 year

The thing that puts this film beyond the original Nightmares is the fact that they went with the original back story intended for Freddy as a child molester. They decided against it in 1984 and just went with him murdering the children out of revenge against the parents killing for him (for revenge on killing kids) whereas this actually has a better reason for Freddy hunting the kids, having died because of the kids exposing him for his abuse. Everything is just creepier as a result even though it wasn't as good visually without certain practical effects. If it wasn't for the nostalgia of fans this would be a top 4 Nightmare film (1st is Nightmare 3 Dream Warriors, 2nd is New Nightmare, and tied for 3rd would be Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)). I do have nostalgia for the originals having grown up on all of them (and having had several real life nightmares where Freddy showed up which I hated while sleeping but loved upon waking up) but I am willing to admit that this reboot was solid and brought a more depraved and humanized Freddy Krueger.

It depends on the study but roughly around 7 minutes the brain dies after death has occurred. It's around the 5 or 6 minute mark that the majority of nervous system shuts down. Some state the brain can technically function up to 10 minutes but 7 is considered the usual limit due to what happens at around 6 minutes after death

When Wes Craven was writing the original, Freddy was a child molester. But there was a high-profile child molestation case in LA at the time, and Wes was afraid people would accuse him of trying to make money off of the case. So, he changed him to a child killer. I like that they cast doubt on Freddy's guilt, but I think they should have gone all the way with that plotline and actually made him innocent. I do agree with the poor CGI. Practical effects should always be done unless it is just impossible to do it any other way.

I'm a Fredhead, i love a Nightmare on Elm Street and its sequels, despite the flaws of the later parts, and Robert Englund as Freddy is something you couldn't replace. Granted the remake brought a few things into the movie that were interesting, micronaps, a darker Freddy backstory..., Wes Craven originally wanted Fred to have a backstory as a molestor, but was ultimately. There are just many things that don't make it a good remake, despite Jackie Earle Haley's efforts. Also i felt that many of the characters were not likeable, and the parents were even worse. I'm glad they didn't end up making another sequel to this.

A year or 2 after this movie came out i watched this film pretty religiously. I didnt hate it at all then. The CGI also didnt look all that bad when i was a kid, the wall scene actually freaked me out a bit. As an adult now i keep some of my same feelings towards this film. This movie is still imo better than at least 3 of the Englund ones for premise alone, but i like how that really cemented that this freddy aint goofy. Some people say thats a downside but i like both exist. Im big into horror comedy, but also love a good dark movie. The things they did right were The Opening, Most of the kills, Jackies Freddy Voice, The flashback scenes in entirety, and the addition of the "Child Molester" sub-plot. Some people wont agree with that last one but i feel like if theyre gonna make a "Child Killer" scarier, the only thing they could do is make him a Child Diddler. Its something were all afraid of happening in real life which adds that sense of realism and resentment for the killer. It helps you root for the protagonists here, which they desperately needed as these characters monotone deliveries really dont give much in the film. Kris IMO wouldve made a better final girl and i think they shouldve ran with her being the main character. I dont mind this Nancy, but they already didnt give us much most of the movie and i much prefer Kris' attitude most of the film. That being said her death scene is great though. All in all this movie isnt really that bad, not nearly as bad as people give it credit for. I give it a solid 6.5/10 average score. Theres things i love and things i dont care for but you really can feel the amount of love and effort the filmmakers put into this movie even if it didnt turn out amazingly.
