"Hallowed Be Thy Name" is the final track on Iron Maiden's 1982 album The Number of the Beast. The song was written by bassist Steve Harris and has been acclaimed as one of the greatest heavy metal songs of all time and is also considered one of the band's signature songs. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" has remained in almost all of the band's set-lists since the album's recording, the only exceptions being the Maiden England World Tour 2012-14, and the second leg of the Book of Souls World Tour in 2017. Allmusic describes it as "perhaps the most celebrated of the band's extended epics; it's the tale of a prisoner about to be hanged, featuring some of Harris' most philosophical lyrics." Several band-members have since stated that it is one of their favourite tracks, with Bruce Dickinson describing it as "fantastic" and that performing it live is like "narrating a movie to the audience.
The Number of the Beast is the third studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was released on 22 March 1982 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and in the United States by Harvest and Capitol Records. The album was their first to feature vocalist Bruce Dickinson and their last with drummer Clive Burr.
The Number of the Beast was met with critical and commercial success, and became the band's first album to top the UK Albums Chart and reach the top 40 of the US Billboard 200. The album produced the singles "Run to the Hills" and "The Number of the Beast", the former of which became the band's first top-ten UK single. The album was also controversial, particularly in the United States, due to the religious references in its artwork and the title track's lyrics. Since the release of The Number of the Beast, "The Beast" has become an alternate name for Iron Maiden and was later used in the titles of some of their compilations and live releases, including Best of the Beast and Visions of the Beast.

This is it, man. You found the holy grail of "HBTN" live performances. 😆 For a recommendation of a rather obscure gem from Maiden- "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" This really doesn't get the play because of the era the song was released, but when one listens to it, you simply cannot only listen once. You have to put it on loop. Really one of my favorites from Maiden. Catchy riffs, amazing solo from Dave Murray (song was even written by Murray) and transitions that will put a smile on your face. Bruce's vocals are just amazing. He really delivers this one with deep lyrics... I could go on but I'll stop. 😉

My favorite performances of this song would be the ones I have attended, hahaha. If you wanna check some crazy audience engament, check their 2000 Rock in Rio, with quarter million people as audience (1985 Rock in Rio was 350.000 people); some tracks to check from there could be "Fear of the Dark", "The Clansman", "Dream of Mirrors", to name a few. Great channel, love your content! The day your Patron will allow some sort of tier for requests, it will become huge. Keep up the good work!

The song writing, musicianship and talent of ALL of them is crazy. Bruce is the best frontman in metal IMO. Ozzy, Dio, Rob Halford and Ian Gillan are up there. Check out Rime of the Ancient Mariner, live in New Jersey. Dance of Death live in Chile, The Clansman live in Rock in Rio 2001, Wrathchild live at same concert and Paschendale live. 1982 Hammersmith London, England. We never had the 'Satanic panic' in the UK
@HarryFlashmanVC

Well... at least until the social serviced, police and courts initiated a modern witch hunt in the Satanic abuse scandals of the late 1980s which saw innocent parents arrested, kids seized and jail sentences handed down until years later it was all debunked as utter nonsense. Interestingly perpetrated by secular and mostly atheist authorities. It was a disgrace. It took over a decade for one family to be reunited. The worst examples were on Orkney

Hey there, I’m an Australian 63 year old guy who went to see my favourite metal band in 1982 and saw this very line-up of Maiden, and I’m telling you straight, these guys were the best at what they did. Although they started in 1975 it wasn’t until 1982 when they had the band they were destined to be. Yeah there were certain changes between the years and unbelievably they molded together as though it was meant to be. Bruce came from a band I was really into called “Samson” but OMG, when he joined Iron Maiden they became a World Wide Sensation within the metal industry and genre. Unfortunately Clive Burr, their drummer was suffering from Altzmeimer’s disease and had to give it up. But Nicko McBrain joined the band and they created an amazing legacy for the metal genre. What an incredible band they have always been ✨💪👏👏👏🦘❤🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

This was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, March 20, 1982. Not sure what the social climate was over there at the time. I was 10, but still remember certain people here in the US freaking out about this album and calling them satanists and all that. Not usually a fan of live versions of songs, but Iron Maiden are frequently the exception. Live After Death was also a really good live album from them.

I was 12 in 1982, in Edinburgh Scotland, we didn't have the 'Satanic panic' here, the UK doesn't have the religious puritanical history of the USA, in general. I rember 1982 and I suspect most parents were quite OK with Metal, they were more worried about punk! Remember, we'd just had the Sex Pistols

@wm-nu1yf I'm a practicing Catholic, having said that, those who lost their heads over this probably think that I'm a million times worse for being Catholic! Incidentally, Nicko is a devout Christian. The medaevil church banned the use of tritonic intervals and labeled it the 'devil's interval' purely because it sounded spooky. The 'Satanic sounds' panic of the 80s was a great example of mass hysteria which had real world consequences because it led to the Satanic abuse trials, the nearest thing to a witch hunt we have had in recent times and which was ironically most aggressively pursued by atheist social workers and courts. Public hysteria is a real problem in our society, especially where we have made the media our priests and social media the pulpit.

@@langdalepaul My parents understood that a lot of that was just marketing. They got me Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil album for my 12th birthday in 1984. It was the original run with the pentagram on the cover. They were somewhat religious, but weren't the lunatics who were freaking out about everything. Even in those days in the bible belt, it was really a minority of people who were just loud about everything. Same thing now. Most people don't care about whatever, but you have the "hey look at me, I'm outraged" crowd which get all the media coverage, making things seem worse than they really are.

1982, this was the second album that Bruce did. My brothers were major Maiden fans, which made me a Maiden fan. Now, I did not get to see them on this tour. My dad said I was too young at the time at 11, but I would get to see them live in 86 during their Somewhere on Tour Tour. Iron Maiden had put out 4 albums at this point, so we knew Iron Maiden very well in the US at the time. You have to understand in 82, many bands showed up. The big concert in Cal. With Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Triumph, Judas Priest, Scorpions, and Van Halen took place. Also, this is the time Ozzy and Randy Rhoads were touring and his passing. So Metal was exploding big time. Was a great time to be a kid with older brothers at this time.

On this tour in Australia, they were the headline act. Supported by an Aussie band called The Boys. Myself and 2 mates travelled 3 hours by train to see them. We were 14. It was at the Capital Theatre in the middle of Sydney. We got there and walked up the steps and stopped to survey the scene. There were a lot of bike gang types dressed in black with plenty of leather and hair etc. Beer in every hand and very dank smoke moving in clouds. 😂 I said to my mates “if just one of our mothers were here we’d be dragged home”.😂 Maiden blew us away, red hot show, they played multiple encores, just about every song from 3 albums. The energy was amazing. I lost my voice for days from singing along. This clip just takes me back.

Great reaction! This IS the best version of IM-Hallowed be t n. I would guess this is one the earliest shows for IM after the release of the album The number of the beast. They play it very close to the album version, because that's what they have rehearsed. It's when the band played the song for many many times there is some small addings and and differences developed. This song is used to be played at a redicilous high tempo, especially close to the tour endings.

When you consider body of work stretched over 40 years, I don't think anyone compares to Dickinson (or Maiden). If you don't put a lot of merit on total body of work, then I guess that's a different discussion. Saw this song performed in fall of 1982 a few shows before they were done warming up for Priest, and saw Maiden a few weeks back in Prague. Completely blown away by how well they've held up individually and as a band. Might have been the best I've ever heard Dickinson sound, and I've seen them 20 times.

I agree that most of the public did not know what the song was about, because this concert was held prior to the release of the album. Even so, they had been playing it since December 1981 when they first performed it at the Ruskin Arms in London. You can find the audio of the concert, in which The Prisoner and Run To The Hills also played (all from the album The Number Of The Beast) and in November 81 they played 22 Acacia Avenue and Children Of The Damned, at the Rainbow in London. Two other songs belonging to The Number Of The Beast, so even though they weren't known to the mass audience, I think they were known to the kids in London, because the bootlegs were already scattered all over the city. PS: by the way, if you chose this video because of the definition, I wanted to tell you that I recently found one that I think looks even a little better. Take a look if you want! A few bits of context: This concert took place in Hammersmith in West London so not much Satanic Panic. Iron Maiden are from East London & the song is from their 3rd album "The Number of The Beast" so the crowd would have been familiar with them even though they were the opening act because they cut their teeth in the local pubs & clubs in the late 70s before releasing their debut album in 1980. Other live versions worth checking out are "Live after Death" "A Real Live/Dead One" "Live at Donnington '92" "Rock in Rio" & "Flight 666" to hear the evolution of the song over about a 25 year timespan 🤘

Francis, I recently stumbled across your channel, and I appreciate the commentary you provide. It's several steps above most reaction videos. I will suggest a song by a band that is largely unknown, especially in the US. They released their first album in 2002, and they released their 8th album last year. With this album, they are finally gaining some notoriety and have made their first tour in the US. I am pretty confident this song will score high ratings from you on every dimension. The song is Master the Hurricane by Visions of Atlantis. Thanks for the effort you put into this channel.

My go to for live performance from these guys is Rime of the Ancient Mariner. For me one of the greats from that time is Alice Cooper.

P.S. Within the Rock/Metal Band genre “David Lee Roth” is probably the best example of an entertainer, great vocal performance too, but yeah Freddie, Bruce Dickinson and Dio are the singer’s singers… 😉👏👏👏

Yes, he is signaling to get the monitors to be turned up, as at the time there were no in ear monitors. Also Bruce still does not use in ear monitors, he only has ear plugs in when he is performing.

I love this performance and this first tour with Bruce. I saw Maiden at their very first gig ever in Sweden, October 9 1980 when they opened for KISS. After that I saw them 4 straight years with this 1982/1983 tour was the greatest.

Thank you for pointing out how tight the band is, particularly the dual guitars. Most people don’t comment on that. And yes, it is always live with Maiden; no backing tracks.

The album and this track was recorded January/February 1982. The Beast on the Road tour started at the end of February. The album released on the 22nd March and this was recorded at Hammersmith in London couple of days prior to the album launch so it was new to the audience (unless they'd been to an earlier show on the tour). I think the reason it sounds so similar to the recording is because they were literally weeks apart. This is the best live version imo. I do believe they were support on this tour only in the US and headlined themselves in the UK/

About the satanic panic, if I recall correctly, in their Reading Festival performance in 1982 (featured in the Bbc Sessions cd) Bruce rants (right after Run To The Hills ends) about some british vicar of Huddersfield, who was preaching against the band in that same year, later on. So it probably happened in most english speaking countries. In Brazil, people had similar ideas, mostly word of mouth, like Kiss stepping on chicken in their live shows (which they never did) , Ozzy's infamous bat-bite, Black Sabbath's devil thing (the cover of their then newest release Born Again certainly didn't help)... but that only made us kids get more interested!

When Powerslave came out me and my friends made a pact to not listen to the album before we saw them in concert. We did pretty good and the majority of the songs off the new album were new to us (except for Aces High, it was hard to stay clear of that one.) The concert we went to was at the Long Beach Arena, where they filmed the "Live After Death" video. Needless to say we were blown away, it was one of the best experiences going to concerts I ever had. Watch the video and imagine seeing "Powerslave" and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" performed without ever hearing the songs. Gives me chills thinking about it to this day.

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. This concert was recorded 3 days before the album this song was on was released. So not only did the crowd not know what to expect, they had never heard Bruce Dickenson as the lead singer this was his debut, they had never heard any songs from the new album. So yeah, they were blown away. The album was released on March 22, this was recorded on March 20. Chris

Iron Maiden are also one of those bands that practice the song until they can play it live in the studio straight thru and rarely record the tracks separately and then add the pieces together. Look at some of their Abby Road recordings for their albums in the early 2000's. Chris

As for frontmen, you left out Bon Scott of AC/DC and of course David Lee Roth and never forget Elton John. Then there was Meatloaf and Joe Cocker. So yeah, lots around at that time. But, for metal Bruce kinda rules. Chris

To answer your question it was ..... Iron Maiden that was on top of the game back in the 80's: Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, (This is when CD's where invented) Powerslave, even Somewhere in Time. They were leading the pack hands down. I saw them in Long Beach for the Live After Death Tour, and pretty much every tour after that. I've got 20+ legit shirts and watched them get egged by Ozzy's kids, my daughters have their share of shirts too. Up the Irons. When Number of the Beast came out that @#$@ was scary. We loved it.

If you talk about voices in metal, Bruce is one of the best, but also DIO, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) and Miljenko (Steelheart) is among the very best.

Dude. Maiden is one of the all time greats and one of my all-time favorite metal bands. I've seen them live many times beginning in the early 80s and as early as a few years ago. You need to go to a show. They are still rocking strong and sound amazing still live. They don't use live tracks for Bruce's voice.

For insane composition, listen to ghost of perdition by Opeth. Fair warning, it's about a 10 minute song. But it captivates you with all the changes. This song has about 5 different genres in it.

While Bruce just became the lead vocalist of Maiden at the time he was previously known and loved on the metal scene as lead singer of the band Samson. This performance was in his native UK which was the home base of both Maiden and Samson so he was definitely well-known at the time. Former Maiden lead vocalist Paul Di'Anno was a very underrated vocalist as well. Di'Anno's bands Racer X and Paul Di'Anno's Killers were hit bands on the metal scene as well. As for the greatest performer on the metal scene it depends on the metal style you prefer, there are so many types of metal choices vary ... Goth Metal Peter Steel of Type O Negative, Classic Metal would be Bruce or Dio (hard to choose between them) and for Progressive Metal I'd have to say Andre Matos of Angra. Of the ones I mentioned only Bruce is still alive unfortunately. We've lost too many of the greats over the years. Oh, and I almost forgot ... for Japanese Metal Hyde (who has been performing solo the last few years was the lead vocalist of L'Arc-en-ciel and Vamps not to be confused with the American band The Vamps) has been Japan's greatest male metal performer for years IMHO ... he's still alive and still performing just like Bruce.

Just awesome. I'd definitely put Bruce and Dio up there with anybody as the greatest frontmen in all of metal. Bruce is INSANE though, when you consider how long he's been doing it at such a high lever and the amount of running and jumping he does on stage (see later videos) even in his 60's and after conquering throat cancer...the guy isn't human. Oh, and did I mention he is a world class fencer, airline pilot, archeologist, and best selling author as well? Mind Boggling! On a side note and speaking of impressive vocals, you really should check Helloween live from their United Alive performances. They reunited with their former singers and guitarist and now perform with 2 main vocalists and 3 guitarists (who are out of this world good): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrCnqNR9la-uoas.html

Best vocalist, Bruce by far. People argue that Dio is, but he didnt the the same things overall. Bruce is still running around high jumping and belting out the notes.
