How do you scale social relationships in business? Online spin doctor and PR expert Jerry Silver explains why relationships are key for growing your business and why brands must target a stupid majority to attract the active support of a smart minority.
Working out of both New York and Stockholm, Jerry has helped numerous world-renown brands and startups to activate their fans online. Besides helping clients, he authors the popular PR blog, Doctor Spin. In his talk, Jerry will reveal why we must stop obsessing over big reach numbers in marketing and PR, and instead uncover the power of small numbers.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

7 years later... Sheesh!! What a breakdown of PR successes. Jerry is so spot on about the mental health decrease in the lack of editorial. At the same time, one can break through all that and still build a loyal base with their brand.

Great talk! PR success isn't mysterious. It comes down to a mix of old-fashioned research, savvy trend-watching and good people skills. It is the age-old talent of telling a good story. That's really the essential difference between PR and advertising!

The talk was very impressed! As a PR student, i agreed with you that PR = public relations = personal relationship which we are the middle person to communicate with our clients, stakeholders, organization and public. PR practitioner plays an important role to build good relationship with every parties to increase or preserve the reputation and image of their organization. Nowadays, the emergence of social media has let PR practitioners easier to engage with the public. I'm appreciated on your sharing to us!

Nice Talk! PR practitioners is the one who act as a middle person to communicate with the clients, stakeholders and the organization. Basically, PR practitioners has to build good relationship in any of the parties to increase or preserve their sales and reputation of their organization. Moreover, the emergence of social media has let PR practitioners easier to engage with any of the parties even the minority as well. Therefore, the PR team of an organization have to be clear whether which social media that their targeted customer most likely will engage more into with and from that, boost their related post and engage more from that side.

Thank you for your explaining the importance of personal relationships (great substitute of the PR abbreviation) in cultivating a growing business. A great perspective in using interpersonal relationships to reach small numbers in order for brands to be successful, as there is no longer a shortage of editorial space with the rise of social media.

I love this. One question that we commonly get as a personalized video messaging company (Bonjoro) is, "But if you take all that time to record a customer video for each new prospect or customer, how does it scale?". This discussion on the value of true fans and the scaleability behind it speaks to that.

I'm from Malaysia and Malaysians love Milo (chocolate powder with malt powder drink). Similar to the example that you have given on bacon and eggs, besides the fact that Milo vans often paid schools a visit, Milo is the drink of the nation and one of the drinks to give your morning a head start is due to its successful PR campaigns. The syllabus still very much emphasize on how PR reaches out to the mass audience, and of course, it is not wrong. But to have you say that PR can also equate to personal relations definitely brings a new route to the PR industry and help us see what we have not been able to see all along.

I am am sure that every customer’s objective is to choose a reliable company to collaborate with. The fierce competition obliges us to use every bit of resource we have. So, if previously the ultimate weapon to gaining consumer’s trust was marketing now PR became as much as important. Despite increasing company’s authority and social profile, PR plays a vital role in the times of crisis. For example, imagine a competitor who starts to spread false, but persuasive/convincing unpleasant information about our company. It is natural, that the public awareness will increase and customers will slowly start to leave. However, when rumors start spreading, we as PR can join the game and states why the information is false, in order to minimize the damage.

My friend asked me before what PR actually is and can't the boss itself perform PR as well? I said, of course, he can, but what we study and profession is on the proper tone, word, medium used to respond to different situations and public. But anyhow, PR is also a skill that everyone should perform well in our daily life.

It's true! I agree that managing a brand image consistency is not only throwing money and posting social media posts on it. The PR practitioner should enhance the existing relationship such as the internal and external stakeholders as they are the ones who will involve in your business. Save your money from creating leads on social media and focus on creating exciting and inspiring PR stories to manage your brand image. Thanks for sharing!

with respect is mass marketing advisable in the light of climate change? Am also beginning to think that being 'professional' represses and supresses our true being, depriving society of that needed 'spirit'. I.e., conforming to 'business' 'principles' makes society toxic and inharmonious, because real emotions are not expressed. Thus we need to see life as important theatre/metaphor and not as repetitively 'mechanic'?

@@sensorganization2535 Great point. Maybe there's a smart minority in your argument somewhere just waiting to gain followers?
