This week I'm taking a look at some retro model railway items from the 70s and 80s. As I explain at the start of the video, the father of one of my best friends passed away last year and they very kindly let me hold on to some of his old model railway items.
While most of it was all fairly old, it did have a certain retro charm (I recognise some similar things I was given secondhand as a child!) and amazingly it was all in fantastic condition. So I thought it would be fun to take a look at it all and take a walk down memory lane - partly out of curiosity but also just to see how far our hobby has comes in the decades since.
My thanks go to Al and his family for making this video possible and for entrusting me with this collection.

04:25 - Track

10:05 - Conclusion
Thanks for watching 😃

A quick point about the plug hanging out of the packet, back then most electrical items didn't come with a plug, you had to supply your own.

I was very grateful the family came to me and were so willing to let me hold onto so much of it. We did check through the value of everything but unfortunately it's in that area where it's not old enough to be considered valuable yet so they were happy for me to give it a good home and share it with you all. I think I'll definitely have to do a run of honour on the layout in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

This was great. I'm from Canada and the highlight of my summers in those days were my yearly holiday visits to family in Scotland and getting more trains. I have all the catalogues from this era and most of my models are from the early 80's. These are all great models, if not as detailed as today's. You were surprised most of the locos ran, I'm surprised the Class 47 didn't! See if you can get a copy of the 1981 catalogue. I think it's the best one they ever issued - you'll like it.

Really glad you enjoyed it Ian. I think I was surprised that the locos mostly worked because I've had experience of older models in the past which have seized up over time and took a bit of work to get moving. Luckily all these (aside from the 47) were practically pristine inside their boxes which helped massively. I also did a follow up video where I got the Class 47 running again too! Thanks for watching and I'll keep an eye out for the 1981 catalogue 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Thanks, I'm working my way through your older videos and I did just find the one about getting the 47 running. Those old Triang and Hornby models are nearly indestructible anyway and will nearly always run after a clean-up and service.

I also ran Zero1 for a while. It was sadly ahead of its time, and the decoders were really tricky to fit in anything smaller than a larger diesel or tender. Still think the design of the controllers themselves just oozed seventies cool! Compared say to the Hornby Elite controllers today, which aspire just so uninspiring.

Crikey, what a tidy wee bundle! That B12 looks wonderful! A bit of a throwback seeing the middle wheel flangeless when train set curves were even tighter than now! 😜 Those H&M controllers were always good and I’m glad to see you got a couple of good ones! Always preferred them to the Hornby types as they always seemed a bit underpowered 🤔 Shame about the 47 but I am sure a quick clean up (and maybe re-energise the magnets) should see her run just great 😉 Cheers mate, nice to see something a little different 👍🍀🍻

Hi, lovely models. It's odd hearing you describe these as vintage lol to me they were a step up from my start in 1975. The original H&M controllers were bullet proof and fine for even today's motors. Certainly Gaugemaster types would give finer control on modern motors. I must do a so called vintage series with my models. Still got all of them 🎉

Condolences to you, your friend and his family. Ah, this was like a journey down memory lane for me! Every time you pulled something out of a box I either had one on my layout back in the day, or had seen one at a rail fair or model shop! The brick bridge was a real memory jogger though, as I'd completely forgotten that I had one at the back of my shed layout! I remember when the Zero One came out, and it seemed like magic, but was far too expensive for us mere mortals! I also remember quite clearly having both of those catalogues, which were amazing things to have as a ~10 year old child back in the day as you could get lost in them for hours! Mum and dad even bought me the Mallard from that catalogue for Christmas one year! So, thanks for the memories! All the best, Ian.

Nice one . I still use an H&M Clipper . Mine dates from 1975 . The fence you were holding onto actually clips to the platform ramps to have station fencing . The 47 even at the time was dated . The two lines along the side were designed for the two tone green one , they were completely out of place on the blue one , it really spoiled the model . Again I have a special edition Lady Diana Spencer in large logo livery but still with these lines . Hornby did eventually take them away , I think when there was competition from a Lima model . Hornby eventually had to up their game ! The 25 was a good model for its time in 1977 and still looks ok . Always keen on seeing vintage items . Have a look at Oscar Paisleys channel .

Did you try turning the class 47 around on the rolling road? It may only have 1 set of bogies that drives the train and you may have been trying the unpowered bogies. When my dad passed a couple of years ago it got me thinking about the train sets he bought me in the 50's and 60's. I got them out of the loft, they still worked after 50 years and it got me back into model trains again.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey George, I made sure the powered bogie was on the rollers but the whole rolling road is powered anyway so even if it was the wrong way round it should have still attempted to move. The good news is I think it will be fairly simple to repair and get it running again. Great to hear you've rediscovered your own train sets though and it's brought you back into the hobby! That frieght train set reminds of one of my first model experiences a few years ago was with my uncle's 1993 intercity 225 that had a homemade CD motor conversion that my Grandad made. Models from that era where so much more fun, easier to repair and customise and I notice that you get a lot more model for money. Now your lucky to get a 1 point let alone 2 in a train set.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the train sets definitely had a lot in them back then. I do think a few points so you can create sidings or loops does make it much more interesting and probably means a beginner is more likely to go out and get a second loco so they can take full advantage of the set. It's a shame the train sets of today have moved away from this. Thanks for watching 😃

H & M's are great, but there were some others with center off that were never quite off, always trying to go in one direction or another. Clippers and Duettes (dual control) are still very popular on the second hand market due to their superior control in comparison to the cheap end of the market today, and can give many an expensive model a good run for the money.

Very exo friendly way of packaging the points. But people would call it cheap if we did that now so some good old plastic it is! The controller would probably be a out 80 to a hundred quid in todays money. Not exactly a cheapo one. If that 08 was released today with that box art there would a lynching from some youtubers. 🤣

I remember a few years ago PECO moved away from card packaging for some of their kits and points to have plastic sleeves instead and a lot of people weren't happy about that so perhaps public perception has shifted somewhat. Yes the controller definitely wouldn't be a cheap one today! I was just making the point that you can still buy a starter controller for around £15 but this would be more equivalent to the Gaugemaster range or Hornby's larger H&M controller. You're right about the 08 though, I don't think it would just be KZfaqrs who would be annoyed about that one! Thanks for watching 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy You were right in the first instance, the main unit with the plug, only outputs 12v DC one side and 16v AC the other. So touching those probs is the same as the track with the power on. From memory, I think you could only run a max of 3 add on controllers before the transformer got overloaded. See Health and Safety existed even back then.
