All-day classes at the primary and secondary school in Dauin, Negros Oriental. There are schools like this all over the Philippines.

We are there when the traffic police man the zebra crossings on the national highway early in the morning, slowing down and regulating traffic so that students and parents can reach the school entrances on foot, by motorbike and by pedicab.
For many students, a visit to one of the sari-sari shops or small stalls is planned before class. Then it is quiet again in the village and on the streets.
Soon, the first mobile vendors arrive and set up their stalls on the wall of the primary school with all kinds of goodies for the break at 10 a.m. There are chilled drinks, fried bananas, siomai, fish and squid balls on skewers, and much more that school children enjoy here in the Philippines.
As primary school children are not allowed to leave the school grounds during breaks, the vending takes place through the fence and over the wall.
At lunchtime, around 12 noon, the high school students are allowed to leave the school grounds and take over the street in front of the elementary school. Then the vendors have their hands full selling over the wall and into the street. Some students walk all the way to the market, where they sit in the food court.
There is another rush in the late afternoon, when school ends. The street fills up with students and their parents, who are already waiting with their motorbikes. Those who are not picked up and live further away try to make their way to the market, where a large number of pedicabs wait for the students in a quiet side street.
What happens on the highway in the early morning also happens in the late afternoon. Traffic has to be regulated so that the students can cross the road safely.
It was an exciting day for me to experience all this.
