Welcome to another episode exploring the vibrant daily life in the Philippines! In this video, we delve into a unique morning phenomenon seen across all major Philippine towns, including the charming city of Dumaguete in the Province of Negros Oriental on the Island of Negros.
Every morning, small stalls with homemade food spring up along the streets, catering to the early risers on their way to work. These stalls offer a variety of delicious and affordable meals, often frequented by motorcyclists who form the majority of the workforce commuting at this hour. Many of these riders stop by to buy their breakfast or snacks for later, while others enjoy their meals at the makeshift tables set up by the vendors.
These stalls are typically temporary, disappearing between 8 and 9 a.m. as they make way for the opening of the shops they occupy. However, some lucky vendors with stalls in front of their houses can extend their business hours.
In this video, I take you on a journey along the southern part of National Highway 7 in Dumaguete City. Our adventure begins with visits to several food stalls, culminating behind Robinson’s Mall, opposite the Jeepney Terminal. Here, I have an engaging conversation with a jeepney driver who shares his frustrations about the city administration’s regulations. He explains the challenges faced by drivers, such as the limited space at the terminal, the toll fees for entering the city, and restrictions on picking up passengers at the port area.
As we continue our exploration, we arrive at Barangay Motong, a quaint area bustling with stalls selling pre-cooked meals and portioned food ranging from 10 to 45 pesos. During our visit, I stop for a brief chat at an egg shop where the owner and his friends are enjoying their breakfast in the mild morning air.
Don't miss the small fish market next to one of these food stalls, offering a wide selection of fresh fish to the neighborhood and travelers from afar.
