I assume the plug hole has a lot of resin and then silicone in it. But the next thing has to be a backsplash to stop the wall from getting trashed and to stop water getting down the back and breaking down the materials with time? Perhaps some creative materials usage for a backsplash ? As always superb video 😀

Yes! I was out of silicone and didn‘t want to run to the shop right now. I will add all that once we go back to „normal“
@karincorbin2355

silicone is not the correct material for bedding a drain fitting into the opening. It should instead be done with a product known as "plumber's putty" or as an alternative butyl rubber tape. Both of those material will remain soft and stay watertight for a lifetime of use. But silicone caulking can loose its bond and then leaks will occur.

That's an outstanding project and it came out very nicely. For future reference (should you have another such project), there are very soft, finely woven fiberglass cloths used in the radio control airplane hobby. Those finer cloths allow you to mold them into corners easier. That way, you can seal the corners with the fiberglass as well. Keep up the great work.

I've never seen anything like this, Laura. The concept of using wood is so unexpected for a sink. The look is incredible. Makes me thinks about designing a whole integrated sink, drain board, and countertop using butcher block and wood inlays. Great idea and a beautiful piece. Thanks again.

@@Richard_OKeeffe The other sort of resin generally used with glassfibre is Polyester. Still has it's place in glassfibre layup, but not as good as epoxy for glueing and sheathing jobs like this one. I build boats in wood, I use Epoxy. Use West a lot, but there are others that have their advantages. The MAS system in particular does not suffer from 'Amine Blush' (l'll not explain here, lots of info on the interweb.) I'm also interested in trying some of the new water based epoxies that are getting good reviews among fellow boatbuilders.

Wow Laura, when I saw that you had made a sink from plywood, I was wondering how you would seal the wood from the water but you didn’t have surprise me when you sealed it with some fibreglass material and I think that that was an inspired decision because I was think of some sort of wood sealer to that very job, but once again you have done the most wonderful job of repurposing left over material from other projects. Fantastic Laura, looking forward to your next video and please look after yourself during this most unpleasant of times.

I built a darkroom sink for my darkroom back in the early 90s out of plywood. I coated the inside of it with fiber resin and fiberglass cloth. I recently recoated the insides of it with Flex Seal liquid (white). I'm going to paint the outside of the sink a color I call "Kodak Yellow". I'm going to cut off a section of a Kodak box and take it to the paint store to see if I can get a match for paint. But I think the Flex Seal liquid (white) was an excellent choice for recoating the inside of the sink.

Love the design! Like others said -- backsplash! -- also, it looked like you fitted your drain without any plumber's putty... it's like a kind of soft clay that doesn't really ever dry out and will fill in gaps and small voids between the drain and tub of the sink, preventing leaks. On the bright side, if the bottom of your sink does rot out, you can just whip out a fresh sheet of birch plywood and make another! This is a great idea and I'm very impressed with what you've done, here. All the very best to you!
