Thanks for watching Steve. K8lynn and I just wrapped filming our next episode; rust repair, welding in cab corners, filling holes left by molding and emblems we removed. K8lynn did it all. New episode should be ready to publish Monday.

If it were mine I would rebuild the flathead, the front end and anything else necessary (brakes, clutch, rear end, et.al.) and drive it. You should be able to find a new grill. Kaitlynn has good taste. She will be so proud of this when it is finished. You should build and long, wooden bed for this and put urethane on the wood. That could be a beautiful truck someday. I am not a patina guy. I would paint it candy apple red. Kaitlynn is the star of the show!!! I would strongly recommend trying to find a shop manual for this truck and a post war Motor's manual to learn how to rebuild the carburetor and everything else.

In the early 70s I bought a 1941 11/2 ton truck that had brass plates riveted to the dash showing the shift pattern, the max speed in each gear with 45 mph in 4 th. Also a large data plate riveted to the glove box cover. It was removed when the Army sold it to the civilian market. Those trucks had ford flat beds with stakes with 1x4 with 2 on each side and on the rear. The radiator is split with a water pump for each bank of the engine, there was no crossover except at the upper radiator tank. The spark plugs are located above the piston next to the valves. My truck was a civilian model as the bed was bolted to the frame while the military ordered ones carried the spare tire horizontal above the frame behind the cab with the box bed on extended supports. The civilian bed was 791/2 inches wide so Ford did not have to put one the cluster of 3 lights on the front and rear. They are required on any truck or trailer that are 80 inches and over. A well tuned flathead is a very well balanced and quiet running engine. My "41" had the same tow hooks, was painted with zink chromate primer under the orange paint. Our 15 year old grandson asked if he could buy it as he wants to restore it. We sold it to him for $1.00 so that he can have actual Army truck that was produced as a civilian

A lot of the decisions about what we do will come from pulling the motor and seeing if it’s original and/or rebuildable. We really like the patina on this one. It would be hard to cover it up. After all, it took 82 years to look like it does.

Good to see your daughter getting into this sort of stuff. You are right about Z's there are lots of good ones out there....there has to be as they are our future. That's a later 8BA type flatty that first appeared in Ford trucks in 1948 (cars in 1949). Down here in NZ this would not be a "pre- war" truck as we were in it from 1939. The FOMOCO plant here stopped producing cars in 39 and switched to munitions, Bren gun carriers, but kept producing some trucks. I will watch this build with interest and have subscribed.
@Xthreadgarage
@Xthreadgarage Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. We’re doing some on the fly learning about flatheads here, but intend to break this one down and identify what type or series it is and whether it is original. What gives you an indication it’s an 8BA?

@@Xthreadgarage I'm in Lower Hutt 14km north of the Capital Wellington. It is an 8BA because the water necks in the heads are at the front. The earlier ones with 24 stud heads had the water neck in the centre of the top of the head. Also it has the distributor on the side while the earlier ones ran direct off the cam at the front of the engine.
@Xthreadgarage
@Xthreadgarage Жыл бұрын
@@graemeburr6463 Thanks for the lesson. I knew it was a 21-stud and that there was a 24-stud version, but didn't know any other visible differences existed. I'm a bit of a muppet when it comes to flatheads, but I suspect by the time we're done with this one she'll be alright.

Great backstory and history lesson for an Englishman. I wonder if that new deal would float nowadays in a similar situation? I'd like to hope so. It's also kinda weird to hear '41 mentioned as pre war though but for you guys I guess it was.

You just filled in some of the missing information on my "41" ford. The military used 6 cylinder engine as they had better low end tourqe. So my assumption on my truck being Army. Is probably wrong as I do not have that tag in the cab. Have a great time working together. We had a granddaughter living with use. I was getting ready to change the oil and filter on my 1961 F100 4x4 pickup. when Raeli slid under neath and wanted to do the oil change. She had just finished 6th grade. She has been able to do work on her own cars to save money and have some knowledge to spot the systems that try to cheat young women onto pairs. She is 21 now and does take care of her car.
