L’abbazia di Sant'Egidio si trova nella contrada di Fontanella del comune di Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII (Bergamo), essa ha mantenuta intatta la sua austera e affascinante architettura romanica. In questa incantevole abbazia, fondata ben mille anni fa, circondata da boschi rigogliosi e vigneti, si può cogliere ancora l’atmosfera di un’epoca ormai lontana. E’ stata fondata nel 1080, per iniziativa di Alberto da Prezzate. La lontananza dai centri urbani rendeva il luogo poco sicuro: la costruzione della torre fin dalla sua edificazione potrebbe indicare l'idea di creare un monastero-fortezza. L'edificio presenta una struttura basilicale con tre navate separate da due file di archi a tutto sesto poggianti su colonne con capitelli scolpiti. Sulla parete di fondo della navata si trova un pregevole Crocifisso ligneo di Pietro Bussolo (1515). Ciascuna navata termina con un'abside semicircolare: quella centrale presenta un affresco di epoca rinascimentale raffigurante Gesù Pantocratore. L'absidiola di destra venne affrescata da Cristoforo Baschenis nel 1574. Altri affreschi si trovano nell'absidiola di sinistra e lungo le pareti laterali. All’esterno le tre absidiole sono lievemente ornate. La torre campanaria è imponente rispetto alla chiesa. Nel 1964 vi si insediò David Maria Turoldo (presbitero, teologo, filosofo, scrittore, poeta e antifascista italiano); già nel 1963 aveva cominciato a cercare un sito dove dare avvio a una nuova esperienza religiosa comunitaria, allargata alla partecipazione anche di laici, seguendo le istanze di rinnovamento culturale e religioso ispirate al Concilio Vaticano II: la “Casa di Emmaus” è un centro di richiamo alla semplice accoglienza, senza distinzioni di censo, di religione, o altro. Nella piccola libreria (aperta nei giorni festivi) si possono trovare i libri di Padre Turoldo; lungo la passeggiata che si snoda da dietro l’abbazia vi sono sculture ispirate a suoi brani poetici.
The Abbey of Sant'Egidio is located in the Fontanella district of the municipality of Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII (Bergamo), it has kept intact its austere and fascinating Romanesque architecture. In this enchanting abbey, founded a thousand years ago, surrounded by lush woods and vineyards, you can still grasp the atmosphere of a bygone era. It was founded in 1080, on the initiative of Alberto da Prezzate. The distance from urban centers made the place unsafe: the construction of the tower since its construction could indicate the idea of ​​creating a monastery-fortress. The building has a basilica structure with three naves separated by two rows of round arches resting on columns with sculpted capitals. On the back wall of the nave there is a valuable wooden Crucifix by Pietro Bussolo (1515). Each nave ends with a semicircular apse: the central one has a Renaissance fresco depicting Jesus Pantocrator. The apse on the right was frescoed by Cristoforo Baschenis in 1574. Other frescoes are found in the apse on the left and along the side walls. Outside the three apses are slightly decorated. The bell tower is impressive compared to the church. In 1964 David Maria Turoldo (Italian presbyter, theologian, philosopher, writer, poet and anti-fascist) settled there; already in 1963 he had begun to look for a site where to start a new religious community experience, extended to the participation of lay people, following the requests for cultural and religious renewal inspired by the Second Vatican Council: the "House of Emmaus" is a center of reference to the simple welcome, without distinction of wealth, religion, or other. In the small library (open on holidays) you can find the books of Father Turoldo; along the promenade that winds from behind the abbey there are sculptures inspired by his poetic passages.
