I washed my scalp/hair every day for 38 years. Then, I went no poo. My hair was shine, very oily (scalp too), 3a/3b and mid to thick and it became an opaque dry mess, fine and 2b/2c/3a after 7 years. It thinned and fell to the point I got an androgenetic alopecia diagnose. And no. It was not related to the Deva products, which I used in the beginning but didn't like the work out needed to use them. I ditched the brand. The last 4 years I reverted back to my old care (sulfates and silicones), spend a lot of $ on hair therapies and selected products, and my hair is back on track. I stopped no poo in 2019. So, just have in mind that even back there shampoos had already come a long way to clean hair without scrubbing your hair of everything. Lesson learned: Don't fall for internet trends or trends promoted by people that are selling products related to it (Deva). Let alone if you are a chemist like me. If your hair is ok with whatever you are doing, there is no reason to change.

Speaking as a family doctor who used to work in a derm clinic, flaky, oily scalp can be due to yeast and bacteria that can be treated with anti-dandruff products. Head&Shoulders or zinc pyrithione shampoo, Selsun Blue or selenium sulfide shampoo, Nizoral or ketoconazole shampoo, coal tar products are also amazing for seborrheic dermatitis and psoriatic dermatitis. You can also use the Neutrogena acne wash with salicylic acid in the orange bottle on your scalp. Wash your scalp every other day for a whole month with these and it should be 99% improved. Continue with one of these at least once weekly after.

Flipping the hair to shampoo “against gravity” works really great, and also flipping it over to do a final rinse gets all that hidden shampoo rinsed away. When I really want to get crazy, I do a final-final rinse of distilled water with a sports water bottle I keep in the shower. Helps manage the hard water build up. Great video, thanks Abbey!

WAXY SCALP: for about 2 years I had a huge problem with a waxy feeling scalp with painful sores. Even after trying many clarifying shampoos, it was just getting worse. It never looked or felt clean. I had bloodwork to check for hormone issues, went to a dermatologist, installed a 3 stage water filter system and replaced my water softener. I even tried dish soap! In the end, it was caused by Olaplex applied at the salon. The last time I had it added to my color treatment (2 years ago) I reached up and felt my hair before and after application of Olaplex 2 by my experienced/Olaplex trained stylist. A lightbulb went off and I realized what the cause was after 2 years of scalp issues. I have never had Olaplex added to my color again and I have never had a problem with waxy scalp or scalp sores since then. I know many people love Olaplex, but for anyone frustrated by waxy scalp with sores - if your stylist uses Olaplex, try discontinuing and see if your scalp problems end.

Ugh your hair is amazing. It's really cool to see how much movement you have in this video, and comparing it to the more "polished" styling (idk how to describe it) with less movement from your vid about a week ago ("HUGE Beauty Haul"). Both are stunning, I don't have a favorite but now want a cut that allows for some movement just to have the option. You slay queen. Love your tips & think it's so cool your a certified trichologist now! What a journey you've been on so far. Excited for what's to come!
@GuessJess
@GuessJess 2 ай бұрын
As a certified trichologist, would you be willing to make a dedicated video for coarse, frizzy hair textures? I know that’s not your hair type so you wouldn’t recommend the same products that you particularly use, but maybe you can discuss ingredients to look for in shampoos, conditioners and styling products that smooth frizz and add some weight and protection to fluffy, dry hair. I wear my hair naturally curly, but I also like to blow dry my hair straight sometimes. I always see tons of content for fine hair adding volume but I actually need the opposite 😂
@michelleyoga87
@michelleyoga87 2 ай бұрын
I’ve been watching her for over a year…and i have thick/coarse 3c/4a hair i wear both in protective styles and straight…other than the frequency in which i was my hair (i try and wait two weeks between washes at least)…the products she mentions for certain issues (growth, strength, clean scalp, protein, moisture, etc) all work on my hair…everything works on my hair. She doesn’t mention shea moisture and i still love their shampoo and conditioner (not their stylers so much) but other than that brand, I’ve used a lot of her recommendations with a ton of success. Adding this comment in case she never does a video exclusively for ur specific hair type. Anika, L’Oréal, Pantene, Cer 100, Okaplex, Quai are all super successful in my hair.

@@sheilah.8137 I use TRESemme Rich moisture shampoo and conditioner. I also use the K18 mask once a month. The rest of the time I use the coconut oil (prewash) that Abbey uses. Doing these things have brought my hair back to life and it has a beautiful shine. I'm forever grateful to Abbey for this advice.

Should you double wash with a clarifying shampoo or would that be too much? How many bonding products in a routine is too much? Would using a bonding repair shampoo, conditioner and mask in one wash be too much?

I love leave in conditioners like Pureology Color Fanatic, I don't have any color. Oil is great for middies and the ends like Virtue or Olaplex oils. If hair is rough after shampoo or not these products will help your hair with health and growth.

Could you please do a conditioning/detangling routine please? I have long, fine hair and have the hardest time detangling after showering because my hair is so tangly but if I use a leave in product in it, it gets oily fast.

Your take on scalp oiling has me rethinking scalp my pre-poo oil treatments. I do tend to have an oilier scalp and am prone to itching, flaking, and weighdown to begin with. I also use sulfate-free shampoo, but have been considering going back to sulfates like I used growing up

This is so interesting to me. I wash my hair every week to week and a half. Usually it’s about a week and a half though. I don’t have dry scalp or anything, my scalp and hair just don’t really get dirty or oily. Even though I go that long, my hair still smells really good. I use a scalp scrub and then shampoo and find that works best for me. I was double shampooing before but it was just annoying lol. I use sulphate free shampoos and it made such a huge difference for me, before I made the switch I had severe sebhorratic dermatitis on my scalp and it was constantly bleeding and had plaque buildup. I’m definitely happy I discovered the difference, though sometimes I miss a good clarifying clean.

Abbey, thank you for teach me how to properly take care of my own hair. If I wanted to wash my hair everyday after a long run, what is a good shampoo? I have low porosity hair, it is very thick and I have a lot. I can go up to 4-6 days without washing it and feel just fine. Anything you suggest will be greatly appreciated. Love your channel!

I love the redken acidic bonding line as well! Another great everyday cleansing shampoo is from the L’Oréal professional line, the vitamino color (pink bottle) it leaves my scalp feeling so clean but doesn’t dry it out at all I recommend you try it out as we have similar hair type!

I agree the scalp oiling trend is not for everyone. It’s def not for me as it causes MORE oily hair. I absolutely love your recommendation of Pantene Volume shampoo! I’m an OG subscriber so I can attest, it absolutely clarifies and get’s your hair clean and bouncy. I cannot stress enough, the pre wash step of applying OGX coconut miracle oil has been a game changer to protect my strands on wash day. Abbey, honestly and truly my hair has been feeling and looking it’s best ever since I followed your tips. Keep em coming!! Xoxo 🤎

Hi Abbey, I remember a while back you would say the ph of a shampoo/conditioner mattered, which is why you were recommending shampoos and conditioners with low ph. I don't hear you mention ph at all anymore. I know now you are a Certified Trichologist. What have you learned about the ph of shampoo and conditioners? Does it matter/make a difference. Thank you for your great content.

I copied and pasted this from The National Library of Medicine government website of a study that was done , Alkaline pH may increase the negative electrical charge of the hair fiber surface and, therefore, increase friction between the fibers. This may lead to cuticle damage and fiber breakage. It is a reality and not a myth that lower pH of shampoos may cause less frizzing for generating less negative static electricity on the fiber surface.

A related question: Could you do a video on water quality when it comes to hair and skin health. Big topic I know. Many years ago, on my trip to Italy I noticed in the course of my 2 week trip that my hair and skin were both so soft, redness was minimized. I have rosacea and seb derm now and likely had it then as well. I feel like the water in Italy was the defining factor since I took my regular shampoo with me and wasn't using any skin products at all way back then.

I’ve learned so much from you over the past few years about my hair and my daughters too. The one thing I haven’t found a solution to is the top portion of my hair being knotted after shampooing. I don’t put conditioner near my scalp due to an oily scalp, I use the emulsifying double cleanse method, I use 2 K18 shampoos which I love, and I have zero hair damage. My hair is very long and fine and prone to tangling naturally as is my youngest daughter. There is never a scenario where either of us comes out of the shower without knots in the top portion.

Might be how to massage your scalp and/or how to dry the hair. I brush and then split my hair in half down the middle before getting it wet and I keep it parted all the way until it has airdried and I've brushed it out with a leave-in spray. When I massage the shampoo into my scalp with my fingertips, I'm making back-and-forth motions instead of circular motions to avoid creating knots.I never bunch my hair up or rub it, especially when wet. When I dry my hair, I tap and lightly squeeze my hair with a smooth (not the fuzzy one, actually just a smooth quick-dry travel towel) microfiber towel while the hair is laying down. Then I let it airdry. While it's airdrying, I leave it alone. Don't touch it, don't lean on it etc. It's fragile when wet/moist so let it be! I barely have anything to detangle anymore after I started all of this. I sleep with my hair in a braid every single night and when I brush it out in the morning, there are no knots resisting the brush. Invest in a good leave-in and add a bit of hair oil to the ends.

Love the content. You've helped so much with understanding what I should be looking for (cuz oohh boy is the market confusing). I do have one question in regards to deep conditioning. How often do you need to deep condition? I'm kind of breaking away from the once a week shampoo because my scalp is just nasty by the end of the week and that always meant I was deep conditioning every time I shampoo and doing this long complicated shampoo routine. Should you deep condition after a clarifying treatment?

Abbey I have a very similar scalp and hair type to you (I even have the same seb dermatitis patch lol). 100% Pure Yuzu and Pomelo shampoo is one of the most clarifying shampoos I've ever tried, which is really surprising because literally the only cleanser in it is saponified coconut oil! I am a new subscriber Abby but have been loving your channel for quite a while- You are a true testament to all things beautiful and congrats on the trichology certification. A hair shampoo/condition question for you- is it important to rinse hair in cooler water after conditioning? Do hair pores open and close and does rinsing in cooler water impact the shine or overall condition of the hair or have any lasting benefits as opposed to warmer rinse cycles. I have been using the coconut miracle oil as a pre-shampoo treatment on the mid to end part of my hair and it has been a game changer. The hair is stronger & more manageable and the wet comb out is easier with less hair left in the comb and brush. It's amazing that something so simple is so beneficial. Lastly, can you do a tutorial on the beautiful long layering of your hair. I would love to add a few more layers to my hair and your cut is exquisite. Thank you for all you do. 💝
