Skip to 6:47 for a typing demonstration.
Today we finally get to take a look at Topre clones! More specifically, the ABKO K935P V2 with what appears to be NiZ switches. I had to do a detailed feel comparison with a Realforce and a Type Heaven to really get to grips with what the differences are here. Hope you enjoy the video! :)

The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on an ABKO keyboard right now. This was actually a really nice keyboard to use, I'm surprised at how well these Topre clones stack up!"

Great review video. I really like it. I see a lot of questions talked about the switches compare with the NIZ, and we want to say the ABKO does use the same switches as NIZ. And ABKO is manufactured by NIZ. And the v2 version in the video is a waterproof version, so the workmanship of the case is very high, and it will be very difficult for users to disassemble, but it also shows that the quality is good. I hope everyone likes ABKO and NIZ.

Hi, I have a question about NiZ EC switches, did NiZ bought over the right to Noppoo EC switches at some point? I've done some searching online and I found there is a very apparent cut off point between the introduction of two brand's EC switches (i.e: NiZ EC appears after Noppoo EC, both switches never appear on keyboard in the same time period, & that Noppoo EC no longer exist nowadays AFAIK), which lead me to speculate that this is the case, is this true?
@leoguo4762
@leoguo4762 4 жыл бұрын
@@GlennL42 Haha, you are very careful. In fact, when PLUM was making mechanical keyboard, it was already developing EC switch. Just in time, noppoo needed to make a static capacitance keyboard, so in fact, the static capacitance version and switch of noppoo are all made by NIZ. Although noppoo is no longer available, it's still a great keyboard.

silenced "topre" has got to be on the best sounds for me i just love it. while normally clips are a bad thing i have the realforce RGB and the top plate is all clipped in. the top is easily undone with fingers and the bottom you just slide a spudger across. super easy and the few time ive had the board apart its been a dream. also the varioable actuation point is amazing, super alpha block and modifiers set low so there is no accidental random caps lock. Top quality video as always :)

Unpopular opinion but I hate silenced Topre but love unsilenced Topre. The 'tick' on the upstroke makes the thock sounds more thocky and overall the typing sounds better to me. Silenced sounds more scratchy and dull.

The secondary characters that are below the alphabets on the keycaps are all Korean alphabet characters. The right alt (한영) key toggles between the Korean and QWERTY layers and most keyboards in Korea use right alt to toggle. 한 is for 한글 which is Korean 영 is for 영어 which is English in Korean

I don't know much about Korean, but it appears that all the vowels are on the right and all the consonants are on the left. I wonder how that affects usability/ergonomics?
@cravasity
@cravasity 4 жыл бұрын
@@Yobleck That divide between the vowels and consonants works really well. A combination of 2 to 4 vowels and consonants are used to make one letter and one vowel MUST be used with the consonants in this combination (a letter consisting of only vowels or only consonants does not exist). So it results in constant left - right alternation keystrokes and, at least IMO, it's quite efficient. As for ergonomics, from my experience, I don't think it is too different from typing English since Korean pretty much uses the same keys on the keyboard but in a different order. Other than the fact that Korean typing never calls for the use of Caps lock, pretty much identical. (I'm using a 60% board with keycaps that only have English legends and I don't notice any ergonomic benefit/gain from switching between the two languages) Hope this answers your question.

The rightmost modifier 한자 is alteration between chinese characters(traditional) and Korean. Windows default ANSI 101 setting for Korean keyboard input is RAlt as 한영 and RCtrl as 한자. Sometimes they can be used as seperated kecodes(Windows support it). So full keysets for Korean is actually ANSI-106(101+3+한영,한자). Although Korean letters are completely phonogram, but there are several instances to use Chinese characters. E.G. Korean word 정의 has 14 different homonographs, so sometimes Koreans write down its original chinese character to clarify which meaning they intend to use.

Korean here. The commercial mech market in Korea is really interesting. Instead of the western keyboard market where manufacturers seem to focus more on making sub $100 keyboards with minimal build, cherry switches and decent caps, the korean mech industry seems to focus more on innovative switches and gimmicks or premium build quality and slap the lowest price they could. This abko was one of the best commercial boards I have tried period. I have used countless boards and for a stock board, this is outstanding. There is another korean board that has optical switches called the "CJ Entus" that come with clickbar switches. Unlike Kailh clickbar switches, these switches come in a medium tactility which is comparable to NOS Pine Alps SKCM White. I highly recommend you try them out.

I purchased this keyboard thanks to your review. I like it very much. Great typing feel and sound, much better experience than my Cherry MX Blues. It's not just some knockoff keyboard, you can tell they put some real engineering into it. If you're interested, just buy it from Amazon and return it if you don't like it. The main downside for keyboard is that it's Korean-focused - I can't find the configuration software on their website since it's all in Korean and I don't have a disc drive so I can't install it from the included disc. Anyways I would probably stick with Cherry profile if I were to replace the keycaps, since there is some wobble.

They do feel nice without being too noisy, but this keyboard doesn't have real switches. It's a membrane keyboard with a spring behind each membrane covered key. I took it apart because one of my keys stopped working consistently. That's one of reasons why they're so quiet. The plastic shell is also brittle-there were signs of cracks on mine (and will have more if you try to take apart as the top and bottom are held by just friction and frame clips).

While ABKO does sell membrane keyboards, this one in particular is NOT a membrane keyboard as the internals are similar to Topre. Getting into the guts of a RealForce is very easy, and the RF’s look better. If they made it easier to open up, it would be a far better board IMO. I’d be interested in seeing a hhkb clone using these switches

@enerjiCS
@enerjiCS 3 жыл бұрын
It's personal preference. I have the 45g board, and have no issues with accidentally pressing keys. I will say, however, if you are used to Cherry MX or Gateron reds or browns, these switches will feel a bit heavier than those even at 45g because they don't depress at all until you push them past 45 grams.

You at one point asked for Top X ideas. How about; Best looking (stock) keyboards. I'm sure that black focus would make the cut.
@Chyrosran22
@Chyrosran22 4 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting one tbh. Normally I avoid making Top X videos about keyboards, because there are simply too many, I have too few, and the videos become obsolete more quickly. That's why I tend to do them about switches, as I have an enormous amount of them, and they don't change as quickly. But who knows, I'll see if I can make something out of this :) . Thanks for the idea!

*NOTE: I have one and i found that the switches are NOT smooth.* Theyre smoother than MX Brown but rougher than Vintage MX Black. Theyre rough, but not scratchy, but if youre looking for Ultra-Smoothness than youre in the wrong place. Everything else about them feels awesome though, and they sound even better in person than in this video, especially if you get the full-size keyboard.
@BrianMcKee
@BrianMcKee 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this that they're not insanely smooth out of the box (though I'm sure lubing would help). However I don't notice it at all when typing at speed or while gaming like I can with scratchy linears. The feeling is overall great though and it's nice to type on such a soft keyboard.

If you want some interesting keyboards to review that have that have clone switches, Redragon has a few ones with Cherry MX Blue and Brown clones. While some are advertised as having replaceable switches (they even include four spare switches in some of them), they have very specific circuitry that doesn't work with normal Cherry MX switches or even the clone switches that they use!

I've tried 65g and 45g NIZ, both being the older version, and they do feel nice, but I much prefer the HHKB. Sadly I don't like the HHKB layout and real topre boards are too overpriced for what they are. Nowadays I don't use either but the release of KBDfans hipro keycaps and the new HHKB might put another dent in my wallet :D
