"Dhaka is a free capital of a free country", that's how then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, on December 16, 1971 announced the new country-Bangladesh.
Technically Pakistan initiated the war but in reality we were prepared for the it, said Lt Gen (Rtd) SK Sinha. India was facing problem of infiltration of then Eastern Pakistan and Indira Gandhi decided to fight for a new nation with Pakistan. However, when Indira spoke to Army chief Sam Manekshaw about the situation of country and her desire to attack on Eastern Pakistan, the Army Chief asked to give more time for to prepare for the war. The Army chief replied, "I guarantee you a 100 per cent defeat." Pakistan attacked over India from both of side-Eastern as well Western border. India defeated Pakistan and a new country-Bangladesh was introduced to world. Watch the episode 11 of Pradhanmantri for entire story of India. A Big salute to 1971 war hero's - 2nd Lieutenant Arun Ketarpal, Major Hosiar Singh, Lance Naik Albert Ekka & Flying Officer Nirmal Jeet Singh Shekhon. After war posthumously (except Major Hosiar Singh) these hero's were honored with highest war time gallantry award "PARAM VEER CHAKRA". Our nation will will never forget the great sacrifice given by them for our better tomorrow.

Indira did a good decision by not taking pok at that time because the objective of that war was not pok or jk but bangladesh. Crossing the war objective is not seen as a very good thing in international politics. Emotions are different but practicality is different. She was practical.

Simple answer as per Benazir Bhutto autobiography. .we didn't have enough money to feed 90000 Pakistani soldiers ..to provide them them clothes ..shelter etc. .because of 1971 war ..draught ..oil crises in the world all happening at the same time . .

It sounds good but it's not practical. India had to do that and shimla agreement was very much favourable for us . India should not have maligned its reputation by not giving those 93k back. India did what was right.

Partial truth, its not "Only because of Russia", yes they did helped us at the time of need and we should be grateful to them, but , do remember, it were our ground forces, our jet fighters, our naval destroyers who did the job. Russia and US didnt shot a shot.

One of my relative also participated in this war and won the third higest gallentry award veer chakra from the hands of that time prime minister smt.indira Gandhi ji. Name of my relative subedar Brijendra Singh of 4th Battalion of The JAT Regiment he fought the the battle of fajilka. He heavily injured during close quarter battle but finally captured the MMG from enemy troops. This MMG till today situated in the war museum of JAT REGIMENT Centre bareilly.
