Absolute Frivolity: making a Victorian Sewing Apron & Embroidered Regency Reticule

I'm using up some fabric scraps to make some frilly 19th-century accessories: a circular regency reticule embellished with ribbon embroidery based on an authentic design pattern, and an early Victorian silk apron. Come make pretty things with me today and sew that stash!

Oh my goodness, of course the 18th century would come up with an apron intended only for sewing. I wonder how many of these things ended up in cedar hope chests, along with the requisite linen sheets and table wear... Both projects came out so beautifully. The apron was actually from the 19th Century. :) 1840s which is the 19th Century.

You can make your own twisted cord with embroidery floss. It's very easy and you can get the width/colour you want.

I love these stashbusting videos! Sometimes I feel like a little bit of constraint makes for a much more creative and interesting outcome 😍 Also my sewing machine that I haven’t used in over a decade has been by the door for months - I need to get it fixed up, so that I can start remembering how to sew and make curtains for my house. Your mention of making curtains here was a real reminder to put that in the calendar and get it done 💜

I agree, the challenge adds to the fun. And I put off making those curtains for weeks. It wasn’t until my flub with the fabric that I felt motivated to finish them lol!

I'm not a historical sewist, but I heartily agree with the notion that "historically adequate" or "historically approximate" are perfectly fine. I personally can't imagine not using my sewing machine!

They are both so lovely!! I definitely have that same affliction where I turn "small" projects into totally over-complicated headaches for myself! Have you made a pair of silk mitts yet? Those would use a small cut of silk nicely, and you could embroider them!

I look forward to more projects with small amounts of fabric. I have had a single yard of deep red silk in my stash for a while and I really have the urge to use it for something... anything, but I just have a fear of cutting it. I have never worked with silk, so I am really looking forward to more motivational ideas.

I’ve got some red silk, too, that I’m trying to think up a plan for. Maybe that’ll be a future video. If yours is taffeta, it’s super easy to work with. It’s the satin-type silk that’s finicky. Good luck with whatever you make with it!

14:04 I would suggest unwinding the cord and using it much the same way you might pull two threads from your embroidery thread to embroider with.

Huh, I had no idea those frilly silk aprons had pockets and lining! Well done on both projects, they look spectacular. What about using your remaining silk scraps to make a swiss waist, belts, mitts?

Yay for stashbusting! Something so satisfying about that. So glad I saw this, I need to make a reticule that looks like a brain (for a Regency zombie project) and have been flummoxed on the shape. But this is perfect!

If you need more pices to ribbon embroider, you can make fancy glove/handkerchiefs/millinery/anything bags

They are both gorgeous. I love the embroidery. i have reticule patterns, I have silk remnants that i picked up online cos I couldn't resist the colours. just need to get some organdy. I have plenty of rayon/art silk embroidery floss to twist up into cords. No embroidery as hands wont let me.

The apron is very cute, but a reticule is allways a reticule and not ridicule at all (even with plastic toys in it). You could use the scraps to make a sewing kit, kind of an accessory for an accessory, and put it in a pocket or reticule.

It IS roomy! If you do your measurements right you can make it wide/tall enough to fully hold a fan (mine can hold a short one).

What if you did the Colonial Williamsburg one yard 18th Century Ladies Jacket challenge? I am plus size and I can get a jacket out of 1 1/4 yards of 45" wide printed cotton. With piecing. I use the JP Ryan pattern. :) I did the simple swallow tail version with no stomacher. I also hand sewed my entire jacket but you don't need to do that if you don't want to. :)

I have that JP ryan jacket pattern and tried making it once years ago, now unfortunately that pattern is too small for me. Maybe I could squeeze out an Amalia? Most of my silk pieces are 58ish inches wide so that’s easier. Thanks for the idea!

I've noticed there are no calls to action in your videos and that you, in general, refrain from implying parasocial relationship. That is so nice to see as a consumer of your work. I want to make sure that I'm respecting your privacy since it seems like you value it, but I also noticed some of your indoor plants, and I wouldn't mind seeing a video about them if that's not too personal. Again I respect your ouvre and you creative decisions of that's not your thing.

Hey thanks, I do have a bunch of houseplants and I try to do outdoor gardening as well but it’s super hot here in Texas right now. I don’t know if I’ll do a specific video on the plants but now that I have a new little indoor setup for shooting I’ll probably have more plants pop up in my videos.
