Mr White saying "that guy was abusing kids, but otherwise he was such a great guy," is the worst thing I have heard yet. Like it was just a tiny lapse in judgment to molest 60+ kids over several years?!?! Resign, Mr White!

Taking advantage of children during a bible study session is another level of evil. Makes me feel so sick when I think about it. And anyone who try's to cover up or make excuses for the abusers are JUST AS BAD as the predators. Sorry to everyone who suffered - no one should have to experience this stuff in life. It really hurts hearing that these things can happen. I can't imagine how the victims feel. Try stay strong everyone.

anyways, so the solution, then nessy, DONT TRUST NO ONE IN THAT CHURCH OR ORGANIZATION.... not even pastor... just take care of your own kids and YOU teach them anything you want at home, without a religious figure who could molest your child or children... simple way to live life without having to expose your most beloved.

When I was at Kanakuk I had panic attacks every night due to massive headaches. The camp would not allow me to call home. Eventually they took me to the hospital and I got an MRI. I was diagnosed with a concussion. So there I am at a freaking HOSPITAL only with camp counselors and someone who I assumed was part of camp leadership, and they still WOULD NOT let me call home. When Kanakuk called my mom to let her know her daughter was in the hospital with a concussion, my mom requested to talk to me and Kanakuk refused to let her talk to her daughter in the hospital! WTF??! It was such a creepy, controlling environment and I have no doubt they would shame victims of abuse under the guise of the abused having a "lack of faith." Joe White is a creep. He spoke to me 1:1 after I returned from the hospital and all he wanted to talk about was how worried he was for my faith. It was cringe-y and I remember feeling so uncomfortable having to sit and talk alone with this rich old dude who I had no relationship with about my spiritual health. Something seemed so off about the leadership. My camp counselors were great but they were just a few years older than me. You could tell something just wasn't right. This camp is a dangerous breeding ground for abuse. Just ask the question.. Why wouldn't they condemn the situation immediately and fire this person? There's a reason they kept this creep around.

My heart stopped when I read this title in my feed. I'm a survivor of sexual abuse at a Christian summer retreat, however it was by my own youth pastor. I was being abused in the mornings, missing the morning devotionals and when I did attend the woman who held the class treated me as delinquent I assume for poor attendance. No one bothered to ask me what was going on. I spoke up while on the trip and I faced a backlash immediately from leaders of my own church and the camp. Luckily, law enforcement back in my home state of Florida was open to listening to me and took action. Justice was served as the man who assaulted me and other friends of mine who were members of the church was imprisoned for life. I never took civil action which I regret because these adults were liable for allowing this to happen and calling me a liar when I came forward. But after hearing this had i taken settlement money I wouldn't be able to use my voice to speak out against this horror.

I worked at a YMCA run summer camp when I was 17/18 and we had such strict rules in order to prevent stuff like this and to recognize signs of sexual abuse. We were not allowed to be alone with a camper ever. One time one of my campers ran off from the group during a large meeting and I went after her and had to spend a decent amount of time trying to convince her to come back to the group. Afterwards I got in major trouble and was yelled at because I was alone with her. It's crazy that what happened at that camp was allowed for so long.

Smaller organizations like Kanakuk often lack the same level of safeguards against sexual abuse because they don't have a large leadership to regulate them, especially if they're church-run. Many people have said that communal showers should also be ended at camps because there are numerous reports of sexual abuse occurring between campers if they are nude together.

I looked this place up bc I live in Missouri and went to church camp as a kid (not here, thankfully). They REALLY love the letter "K". To the point where they refer to "Kounselors" and "Kampers." It only gets more suspicious when you see that they were founded in 1926. The Yelp reviews are f-----g terrifying. Several people talk about the "cult-like" atmosphere. And the Kamp motto that says to put others before yourself (not necessarily bad, but dangerous without boundaries as well). The bullying. The secret luggage searches. Then there's this: "[T]he nudity was just weird. They made us boys walk naked from our tee pee to the showers and we all were crammed in the showers together, the counselors would shower naked with us too, very inappropriate. My counselor would even walk around the tee pee naked, for no reason." Sounds like pedophile heaven.

The use of religion as a staging ground for their crimes is the real problem. Christianity comes with its own system for protecting these criminals, which I do not see nearly as prevalent in any other organizations. So many denominations of Christianity have this problem too, which is not nearly as common in other religions. Christianity is a problem, especially in the USA. Your assessment is naive at best.

I’ve worked at a Christian based summer camp, and you just can’t be too careful in hiring staff. We once had a counselor who made a few “off” comments during orientation week, so that the directors spoke with him privately. They decided to let him stay, but had two other staff to always keep an eye on him. The second day it was noticed that he positioned himself right behind the boys as they came to the sink to brush their teeth, he’d lean over them and take their hand and say, “Here, let me show you the right way,” and he’d lean up against them. He did this twice. The other counselor called him over and sent him to the supply building for a broom, just to get him out. The directors were summoned immediately, another left in charge of the cabin while the counselor told what he’d seen. There was then no question. The directors called the police and the pervert was told what he’d been seen doing, and to explain himself. He denied it, of course, but was told he was fired, and that he’d be escorted to the cabin to retrieve his belongings while the campers were at their first activity. The police arrived then, and took evidence from the counselor. They then called the two boys individually, to ask if anything had bothered them while tidying up after breakfast, washing up, brushing teeth, making your bunk, etc. One boy obviously had no idea what they were talking about. The other, however, somewhat reluctantly said that he wanted to move cabins because one of the counselors “is creepy, always looking at me and putting his arm around me.” I’m not sure what happened after that except that the counselor left with the cops, in handcuffs. I remember seeing his stuff in a big pile in the lean-to near the mailboxes, which was odd. When I passed by maybe an hour later, it was gone. A select number of older or very mature staff were called to a 9:30 PM meeting in the “Bear’s Den” where we learned what had happened. Of course, we told the matter confidential. Any talk or behavior was to be reported immediately. It was really rather shocking as there had never, to anyone’s knowledge, been such a problem. It was eventually discovered the man had been arrested one other time while a junior in high school for fondling a much younger boy in the school bus. It had never occurred to anyone that it was necessary to check with the police before hiring a teen counselor. After that summer, the hiring and training became much stricter. This was way back in 1977.

Right. Pete Newman abused these boys on the camp grounds, at camp events, at Bible studies, as a camp director. He built his life around having access to children at his place of work - Kanakuk. Joe white vouched for him many times to families and paraded Pete out as a draw for kids to want to come to camp. He abused some of them at the events their parents paid for them to attend. How in the world can a judge argue this not have anything to do with furthering the business of camp?

These predators do not stop their criminal behavior no matter how long you lock them up for. As soon as they are released, they are out there up to their old tricks once again. The issue is they are prone to not leave any witnesses behind to rat them out, and so they escalate to sexual abuse and then murder so they can't be informed upon like last time.

People don't realize that the creepiest subculture in America are Christian organizations in Missouri: not only here, but the appalling child abuse in girls schools in Missouri, as well as baby theft that used to take place only 20 years ago for unwed teenagers. It's also a state with one of the highest rates of child marriage in the country. And what's worse is the State of Missouri pretty much protects them legally from liability. If the State ever gets involved, it's because the abuses there are 10x worse than everywhere else. How evil!

I went to this camp. One of my strongest memories was questioning why girls had to wear a T-shirt over their swimsuit (even while swimming!) but boys could go shirtless anytime they wanted. They told me it was for modesty. I really hated going there, the kids were bullies and I was never into the god thing, my parents made me go every year from 2000-2005ish. I still remember most of the camp songs.

YES!! I remember that!!! I went in the late 2000s. i remembered when I went they gave all of us girls purity rings, but not the boys. I was a foster kid and it was obvious I was different from the others, and I was bullied as well. when I went to people about it, I got ignored because I was “being negative “ and it was “bad thoughts from satan”. then telling on these girls somehow made it worse… I have extremely bad memories from this place for many reasons, I remember I even got to the point I wanted to k*ll myself when I was there & had a total mental breakdown to at sent me into a bad asthma attack, bc I felt guilty for stuff I shouldn’t have… and how i just felt like i was never gonna get home… how nobody liked me and nobody there was listening.. they threw me in the quarantine area for a day… i was an abused child too & I remember trying to speak up about what happened to me and how I was thankful that after praying to God for years, he finally got me out of my abusive home. The counselor told me that it’s not appropriate for me to talk about that. also, that made the girls bully me even more. Yes it might not be appropriate but I was like 13 and everyone else was telling their testimonies, and that’s what I had for mine. I know that’s not as serious as what these boys went through, but I wanted to share my story. I remember personally speaking to Joe White and just getting an all-around bad vibe from him. Guess I was right. When my grandparents adopted me when I was 14, I remember having nightmares about this place and my grandma reassuring me that I will never have to go back there again.

to anybody who read my last comment, sorry for the long winded rant. But, I whent through a couple of past expirences in my life, and I had to get it out. My heart goes out to Ashton and his entire family. To Ashton, Keep fighting and speaking out against this buddy, you're not alone. They can't sue you or do anything to you and your family. May the Lord protect and watch out for you, and keep you guys safe throughout these rough waters. I know what its like to go to a Christian camp, and then have it not be at all what they say it is. I've never gone through anything like you have, however, they called it a Christian blind camp. However, you know what? I myself as a physical blind person and learning disability proclame, based on my past expirence at that camp say that it was anything but. First off, if they call it a blind camp, there should've been Braille signs through out every cabbon, and rest room. Guess what? There was no Braille. Plus, when I tried to ask for help getting back to the cabbon, one of the nurses refused to physically guide me back. And all she said to me was, "Feel the rope Dave? I would say to her, "Yes." Then she replied back to me, "There's the rope there Dave, Follow the rope". It was not a good camp expirence when I whent there back in 2009, or for one of my other blind friends either. We never whent back. If you ever need to talk, you can email me. djenne0923@hotmail.com. Stay strong my friend.

Nothing like victimizing the victim over and over again. It's absolutely deplorable that the camp it's staff and legal counsel swept all instances of child abuse under the rug several times and required non-disclosure contracts. At the end of the day all of this comes down to money. The camp hides all instances of abuse so they can continue to profit. I guess they were absent from bible study the day greed was studied. I can't imagine the pain the victims and Ashton felt when dealing with all the variations of what they could and couldn't share. It's infuriating to say the least.

In all honesty, I think it's about a lot more than money. Birds of a feather flock together. Monsters protect monsters. Rapists sympathize with rapists and defend them. Normal people don't. Anyone involved in these types of cover-ups is a seriously perverted, depraved creature. Including the females. Remember Ghislaine Maxwell. I don't know what happened to such freakish women or how they got that way, but they are also deviants of some kind. And the fact that Joe Whites and Pete Newmans are rampant in SO freaking many different churches and religions...it says something. About the corruption of the flock, as well as the leadership. If they were really following God, they would never fall for such glaringly unholy leaders and their cultic BS. No, they're following a very, very different spirit. And they'll share his fate hereafter.

I grew up in Overland Park and attended Holy Spirit catholic school. From 2011-2012 I was emotionally abused by the principal, Michele Watson and the Nun, Sister Petra. I had undiagnosed Adhd and would get overwhelmed by complex directions and info. My working memory would time out and I'd have to try to remember what I heard and then that would time out. I'd get bored, restless, frustrated, and angry and drew to ease the anxiety. But when I couldn't stop drawing, they called the principal, Mrs. Watson. She would put her face up to mine and scream, "ISABELLE MYZER! LOOK AT ME. DON'T YOU EVER DO THAT AGAIN! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!" and then she'd smirk when she made me cry and sometimes tried to make me mad in front of people, so I'd look bad. One day after I was done drawing, and actually o task, she showed up an hour later and put her mouth up to my ear and said, "I know what you did..." She also took my picture when I was mad just to harrase me and when I confronted her and asked why she did it, she said, "because I'm the principal and I'm allowed." she pretended to be nice one day. I was talking about butterflies with her, and she was being so friendly. But later that week she banned me from a field trip because she thought I'd look for caterpillars and she made my teacher be the one to tell my mom WITHOUT mentioning it was her decision. She used and bullied at least a quarter of the people at the school whether it be students or teachers. She and sister petra were cruel to someone I was very close with as well. Mrs. Watson spread rumors about the resource teacher and turned all the teachers against her. Sister petra would block her doorway so she couldn't go to lunch and verbally abuse her. As for what sister Petra did to me, it almost got physical. I was arguing over taking a longer drink break with my para and Sister Petra came charging up to me and screamed, "YOU'RE SO FULL OF HATE!" a friendly teacher thankfully came to my aid and said, "Come on isabelle, this doesn't look like a good situation." Sister Petra has physically abused students, so I kknow she would have hurt me. During lunch one day, she had called jr.high students for seconds and thirds and said, "No running" and when they didn't listen, she screamed, "I SAID NO RUNNING!" and then they continued to run and she screamed, "DON'T YOU DARE RUN OR I'M GONNA TRIP YOU!" and lunged forward, tripping two 7th graders. my friend's mom went to the priest about the abuse, and he did nothing. The archbishop never listened either. Plenty of teachers, community members, parents and students minimized everything that happened and tried to side with her or cover for her. Almost no one stood up to them due to blackmail and intimidation. Sister Petra got away with it. She had a stroke a few years ago and got moved to a convent for sick nuns. Mrs. Watson got fired last year because the new Priest was concerned about the low enrollment, which had been a problem for a while. People still blame me, minimize what happened and some don't believe me. It's stupid how blind people choose to be. You want to be blind, and then it happens to you and then you just can't be.

The people you're describing are misogynistic perverts. Not that I'm defending fornication, especially among teens, but that's obviously a very human, very relatable sin--for ordinary people. But the creatures you're describing have no compassion for ordinary people (especially female, obviously) or for ordinary sin. They have endless tolerance for predators and for true evil because they ARE predators and truly evil themselves. People defend what they can sympathize and identify with. Abusers (and their "codependent" enablers) are the ones who defend abusers. This is worth bearing in mind any time this kind of muck comes up. People's reactions will tell you a hell of a lot about who they really are. Parents, keep your children the hell away from anyone who talks like Joe White. The kind of language he uses about Newman is about the biggest red flag anyone could ever wave. Monsters want sympathy for monsters and endless "forgiveness/tolerance/reconciliation" for victims....and of course, endless re-victimization, too.
