Play sports my entire life. Ruptured my achilles 5 weeks ago, playing in a basketball league. First injury I have ever had. I am 38 years old. However, I am not a professional athlete. Although I am very active in sports, I decided to NOT go the surgery route. Having a little less "explosion" or athleticism at my age and level is not that big of a deal. It still sucks knowing that it will not be worth me ever playing competitive basketball again. My passion and main sport for 30+ years. But, I will still stay active and hopefully recover mentally!

How are you now? Have you tried to play basketball once again? I am in week 5 for the achilles tendon rapture and didnt go for the surgery. I wanna know if there is someone who can still play basketball normally without having any surgery

As a physically active person, sports-person, athlete: 2 main pros for surgery. 1) allows to return to the same level of effort & strength and 2) everything happens within 1 year from surgery. Virtually all athletes that suffer this rupture have surgery. Everything else here in this video, is for regular, average person who does not actively engage in sport activities, and that lives in a country where surgery is a difficult option given the health system not being up to the task to execute this operation properly.

I ruptured my achilles tendon and was told by the hospital it was a sprain and was given a course of naproxen and was told I should recover within a week. I went back to the hospital two and half weeks later and had an ultrasound that confirmed the rupture. I'm currently recovering and currently at the 7week mark non surgical. My last physio appointment my foot gave a positive reaction after the pinch/Thompson test, but I'm still concerned as I still have a dip in my tendon.

Informative video. I had my surgery a month ago. My question is , how can a re-rupture occur? Is cycling and jogging a safe activity to do?

With surgical treatment the use of permanent sutures are used meaning you will always have those sutures wrapped around the tendon. At least three surgeons opposed using long lasting absorbable sutures. What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you for the invitation to ask you a question. I tore my Achilles 6 years ago, did a lot of soccer in between, and ruptured it now again (playing soccer). I got the info that the two ends of the rapture can't grow together very well because of the scar tissue of the first rapture (6 years ago)? Is that true.

I had to wait four days for a x-ray. Had a cast put on whilst I wait a further week for a MRI. The cast is really tight around my Achilles and is causing me much pain and got five days to go till removed

You need to have surgery quickly if you are going to do it. Beyond 4 weeks the rupture is considered chronic and the repair is alot more complicated.

Unfortunately I tore the Achilles Tendon in both legs….had surgery on one about 2 months ago…the other still booted awaiting surgery as ddid not get anything done until day 5. Clearly dealing with both legs being out of commission is a more difficult situation. What are your thoughts dealing with this situation.

Sounds terrible - I’ve recently ruptured mine and that’s immobilising enough. Doing both must be awful.

The main thing, whether you choose surgery or not is to do proper physical therapy after you start weight bearing. Let me know if you need details.

Bilateral ruptures are luckily pretty rare but you’re a trooper for having gone through that. Usually they make you some offloading AFOs so you’re not stuck in a wheelchair.

Hello :) when you talk about rupture, do you mean also 100% rupture ? I can not understand how its possible to return to the function when tendon is absolutely ruptured ? thanks a lot :)

From my experience you won’t be a 100%. It takes time to heal. Almost 12 months before I could walk/run without pain. 3 years later after PT, dry needling, and cold laser, I can finally run without a supportive brace.

Definitely get an MRI and go see an ortho surgeon for that one, could be complicated depending on the situation.

I did not go to the emergency room because it didn't seem that serious at first, but did see my general practitioner the next day who diagnosed me with a partial tear, no boot or anything for more than a week when I went to an orthopedic specialist (not a Surgeon) and was placed in a boot with a heel cup, and the MRI was ordered. Finally, 21 days after injury, I had a cast put on. My tear gap was 2.1 CM based upon the MRI. Should I have had surgery? I am second guessing myself now.

@@jamieseamans2796 Well - I'll make a long story short.... I went into the cast 21 days after injury = too long a time, then the Podiatrist surgeon who I finally saw left not weight bearing for 3 weeks in the cast and then 2 additional weeks after the cast. I kept asking about physical therapy and he didn't want me to go. After 5 weeks of non-weight bearing (more than anyone I saw on the net) and then another 3 weeks before the next visit,,,with limited weight bearing,,,, still no physical therapy,,, well I changed doctors and got physical theapy FINALLLy in November. So August 9th to November 14th - no physical therapy...I don't think that was right. Today is May 26 2023, I have mostly recovered. My calf is smaller, and I don't expect to ever fully recover the previous size, I am back to riding my bike - I can easily do 20 - 30 miles on a ride at 15 - 16mph pace, and walk fairly normally, no more limp as before. So, no surgery, back to riding my bike and most normal things. Thanks for asking. I hope you are well.
@jamieseamans2796
@jamieseamans2796 Жыл бұрын
Most folks that have an ATR never fully regain all their original calf size (even the Rock has a slightly smaller calf on one side if you look carefully). When you have complications during ATR treatment (delayed or failed treatments) it gets even harder to rebuild again. To me the functional part is more way important than cosmetic stuff so it sounds like overall you had a pretty good outcome given your specific situation.

How are you feeling now? Did you get the surgery?
@jamieseamans2796
@jamieseamans2796 Жыл бұрын
That’s considered a chronic rupture and the gap is quite large, you’d likely be best to have surgery for that if you are a suitable candidate.

Thanks I had the surgery and recovering from it. About 7 month since i had surgery. I think it is little stiff, but doesn’t bother me too much, still sore sometimes but again not too much. Now my good leg is feeling funny, a bit concerned about it.
