I was recently employed at Lucasfilm/ILM. I worked there for a year and left just last month. I know several of the vfx crew on Acolyte. I never worked on Acolyte, though I did stop into their dailies a few times and generally kept up with my friend about his work on the show. This being said, I was in a meeting with Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy only once and it was when they were announcing launching Acolyte and some other upcoming SW projects. Here’s my take on what Theory said around 7:00. Dave is completely out of touch and is complicit in all this. He was very happy with Acolyte and excited for their new line up of projects. From what I observed, he is totally under Kathleen’s influence and out of touch with the fans. Being CCO, he sees every project and has a major say in how things are done. Theory is right, he is very hard to fire. Though I would argue that so long as Kathleen Kennedy is there he is impossible to fire. In that same meeting Janet Lewin (Kathleen’s right hand woman) said at the start of the meeting that they intend to “recapture children” which I interpret as they’re going to do things at a lower level of sophistication. I doubt the quality of Star Wars will improve so long as Kathleen and Dave are there. It’s very much turned into a factory for content. George was making art, Kathleen Kennedy is making content. To make matters worse, company culture is rife with DEI politics. There are two types of employees at ILM - those who think this new Star Wars content is ‘pretty good’ and those who find it ridiculous but won’t speak up because they’re not empowered to criticize those who are actually in power. I left ILM because Star Wars was going down the drain and I wasn’t in a position to do anything about it. I didn’t want to be complicit by association in the undoing of Star Wars and more broadly speaking, movie culture as a whole.

I cannot claim to be a big Star Wars person, I have always been into Star Trek and Dr Who more. But I have been following Star Wars Theory since he was on Friday Night Tights, and I have been getting into Star Wars more and more listening to him. Even I can see the difference in quality between George Lucas Star Wars and the crap Disney is putting out, and quite frankly I find Star Wars Theory an engaging personality who represents what Star Wars fans think in a balanced way. In other words I think Star Wars Theory is great and I enjoy my time here.
